Stabbed 41 Times, S. A. Woman Dies
Tavern Owner Ice Pick Victim
A 48-year-old woman tavern operator, slain about 1 p.m. Thursday, was stabbed about 41 times ina death struggle, Dr. Robert Hausman, county medical examiner, revealed late Thursday.
The woman, Hallie Bigham, was found about 1:30 p.m. on the floor of Hallie's Place, 4234 Culebra Road.
Police Thursday night were looking for a Seguin man, reportedly a regular customer of the tavern.
Hausman said the woman was stabbed 31 times in the chest and abdomen and bout 10 times in the arms.
He said the woman, who reportedly lived in the rear of the tavern also was chocked and cut one on the chin.
Police theorized the death struggle started behind the counter where a pool of blood ran about 15 feet from the counter to the spot where the woman's body was found.
Hausman said the wound apparently was inflicted by an ice pick or some other long, slender weapon.
One of the wounds's fractured the woman's right wrist, Hausman said.
A broken bottle found on the tavern floor was believed to have inflicted the four inch cut on the woman's chin.
Audrey L. Real, a service stateion operator whos lives at 1030 John Page Dr. discoverd the woman's body at 1:30 p.m. when he went to the tavern.
Real, 47, after seeing the woman's body near the front door of the tavern, notified Mrs. Dora Britz, 4221 Culebra Road, owner of the tavern. She notified police.
Police picked up five persons but released them after questioning.
They ruled out robbery in the murder after finding $118.37 still in the cash register.
The February 11, 1960 issue of the same newspaper, also page one, had an article titled "Seguin Man Tells About Fatal Fight: Guadalupe Co. Sherrif Arrests 18-Year Old" The article stated that Juan Valdez was arrested shortly after noon on February 10 as he and several friends were on their way to a movie. Valdez stated that the struggle which ended with Hallie Bigham's death started when she demanded $5 from him. Valdez said her refused to pay, and the woman called him a "dirty Mexican." He slapped her across the face with a bottle, and she raced from the table at which they had been drinking and grabbed in ice pick.

Kurt Hanes funeral held Saturday
Funeral services for Kurt Richard Hanes, 78, of Snover, were held Saturday at the Hacker Funeral Parlors in Sandusky. Officiating were Rev. Charles Kitchenmaster and Rev. Allen Lewis of Snover. Burial was in Elkland Township Cemetery. Hanes died last Wednesday at his home near Snover after a long illness. The son of Samuel and Richard HANES, he was born in Vincennes, Ind. Surviving are his wife, the former Lena JOOS of Cass City; two sons, George of Indiana and Raymond of Sandusky; two daughters, Mrs. Richard (Fay Lou) VINCENT of Indiana and Mrs. Eric (Patricia) HERRMANNS of California; six grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren.
George W. Haney may have been in Texas at least as early as 1900. A listing that appears to be for him can be found on in Milam County. As of that census, a 22 year old George W. Haney, still single, can be found listed as a boarder in the home of Jefferson and Georgia APLIN. George's date of birth was listed as September 1877, with his place of birth shown as Texas, with his father being listed as born in Alabama and his mother as being born in Arkansas. From subsequent census records, it appears that he was actually born in Arkansas, not Texas. His occupation was listed as farmer.
Around 1907, George married Lenora Barge. At the time of the 1910 census, George and Lenora were living in a home with two other families in Limestone County, Texas. Limestone County was just northeast of Milam. One of the familes sharing their home was headed by Nora's brother, Willis BARGE. The other family was that of John and Laura POTTER. The relationship of the POTTER family to either George or Lenora, if any, is not known.

FindAGrave shows that her tombstone was inscribed with "Ruhe Sanft", and also indicates she was the wife of Ernst Haag and daughter of Phillip and Elizabeth Twiefel Hankammer.
Barbara Yancey Dore shows that she first married Benjamin Arthur ATKINSON, who was born 24 Aug 1838 in Butts County, GA and died ca 1863 in Little Rock, Arkansas.
Florine Hankla Ramsey was born in Geneva, Sabine County, Texas on December 19, 1920 and died December 5, 2009 in Austin, Texas. She was the third of four children born to Samuel Flournoy and Elma Smith Hankla.
She found the love of her life when she married Ben Ramsey, an attorney and Texas State Senator from San Augustine, in 1943. They were married in Boulder, Colorado, where she was a student at the University of Colorado at Boulder. They honeymooned on a road-trip back to San Augustine through Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico, using precious gasoline ration coupons given to them by friends and family as wedding gifts.
While she loved Austin and resided there for most of her adult life, her roots were in East Texas. She maintained a home in San Augustine and continued to vote there for the rest of her life. She attended Stephen F. Austin State College in Nacogdoches, North Texas State College in Denton as well as the University of Colorado at Boulder. She taught first through third grade in a one-room schoolhouse in San Augustine County.
Florine was a proud member of the Ezekiel Cullen Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, and her ancestors were early settlers in Sabine County in East Texas.
She grew up on a farm where every meal was made from scratch and learned from her mother to be a masterful cook and baker. She even gave renowned cookbook author and teacher, Helen Corbitt (director of food service for Neiman Marcus, the Driskill Hotel and The University of Texas), a few tips and recipes. To this day, a meat processing company in Austin still uses her recipe for making the best venison sausage ever. Florine loved to travel and for more than 50 years was part of a monthly poker group.
For more than 30 years, Florine was a political wife: when Ben was a State Senator, Texas Secretary of State, Lt. Governor of Texas, and Railroad Commissioner for the State of Texas. She cut an elegant and stylish figure at the Capitol and was known throughout her life for being smart, witty and charming. You could just as easily find her beautifully attired in a ball gown or up on the roof of their home repairing a shingle. She was one of the lucky few able to call the Texas State Capitol home, living in the Lt. Governor's apartment for more than a decade with her family. She recalled having to haul groceries through the chamber when the Senate was in session. She was the longest serving member of the Senate Ladies Club having joined in 1944.
She is preceded in death by her parents; by her brothers Randolph and Jim Hankla; and by her beloved husband of 41 years, Ben Ramsey. She is survived by her older sister, Ernestine Hankla Henry, of Nacogdoches; by her three daughters: Rita Ramsey Kreisle and husband Matthew of Austin; Ann Hankla Ramsey of San Augustine; and MariBen Ramsey and partner Karen Kahan of Austin; by her only grandchild, Claudia Ramsey Kreisle of Houston; and by many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at the First United Methodist Church in San Augustine, Texas on Tuesday, December 8 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Florine and Ben Ramsey Scholarship Fund at the San Augustine Scholarship Foundation, PO Box 671, San Augustine, TX 75972, to the Austin Community Foundation, P.O. Box 5159, Austin, TX 78763 (www.austincommunityfoundation.org) or to a charity of your choice.

Sorry for the delay, I have been finding more details on this family. Of the children of James Stewart Hanks, this has been probably the most challenging one to sort out. James W Hanks and Marium Hughes married 26 Mar1854 in Richland County, Illinois. They are in Gibson Co., IN for the 1860 census with son William, age 4 and son Joel A. age 8/12. I have never found this family in the 1870 census. This created a big problem because James W died 10 Aug 1870 and Marium died 27 Feb 1872. The children were placed in different families and have been difficult to track. Probate and guardianship records helped to finally get all the children sorted out. Here is the list of children with notes about what I have been able to find.

Email from Ron Hanks (ronhanks@earthlink.net) on August 13, 2006:
Sorry for the delay, I have been finding more details on this family. Of the children of James Stewart Hanks, this has been probably the most challenging one to sort out. James W Hanks and Marium Hughes married 26 Mar 1854 in Richland County, Illinois. They are in Gibson Co., IN for the 1860 census with son William, age 4 and son Joel A. age 8/12. I have never found this family in the 1870 census. This created a big problem because James W died 10 Aug 1870 and Marium died 27 Feb1872. The children were placed in different families and have been difficult to track. Probate and guardianship records helped to finally get all the children sorted out. Here is the list of children with notes about what I have been able to find.
2) Joseph/Joel Archibald Hanks b. ca 1859 d. 14 Mar 1889 Gibson Co, IN
1860 census w/parents in Gibson Co age 8/12
1870 census not found
1880 census - Gibson Co, IN in household of Benj. Skelton (he was administrator of estate when Marium died, no relation that I know of. Both the Hanks and Skelton families were very active in the Columbia Baptist church. Note of interest, "Red" Skelton was a descendant of Benjamin Skelton.)
1889 died in Gibson Co
No known marraige or children. He was a bit of a puzzle to figure out.
In the 1880 & 1860 census he was named Joel. In the probate records for James Stewart Hanks and in the Guardianship records he was variously referred to as Joseph A, Joseph Archibald , Archibald or Archie.
Other notes - from church records of Columbia Baptist Church Archie Hanks joined the Columbia Baptist Church (aka White Church) by baptism on 19 Jun 1875. He was dismissed 'by letter' , no date given.

"I have information on this family. This was John Stewart (or Steward) Hanks, son of James W Hanks and Marium Hughes. John S Hanks was born July 1865 in Indiana, probably Gibson County. I don't have a date of death for him. He married Annie B Brown, 8 Aug 1889 in Gibson County, Indiana. She was born July 1870. I do not have her date of death either."

HAMILTON - Johnnie Mae Leonard, 95, died peacefully at home Jan. 10, 2012. Born Jonamae Hanks on May 2, 1916 in Lawton, Okla. to Medreth Elberta Vaughan and Alvin Roscoe Hanks, she was the second of eight children. She often told of how she and her older sister, Grace, had to care for the younger children. "I guess it gave us good practice," she said.
She married Curtiss Jaquess in 1934 and in 1935 bore a lovely curly-haired daughter, Flo Lorene. That marriage did not last, and in 1936 she married her first love, Richard Grafton Leonard of Savanna, Okla., a soldier at Fort Sill. A son, Patrick Richard, was born in 1937 and another daughter, Jan Christine, in 1941. The family was stationed around the South, and then in Panama where Jan was tragically killed shortly before her sixth birthday. Johnnie Mae carried that sorrow the rest of her life. Another son, Tony Mack, was born in 1948.
In 1949 the family left Panama for Montana. Based first in Great Falls, then Missoula, Rich and Johnnie Mae came to love Montana. They bought an old cabin near Fort Fizzle just west of Lolo and lived there, raising chickens, bees, and a few cows, delicious strawberries and a large garden. While in Lolo, Johnnie Mae bought a rug loom and began to weave wool rag rugs. She carpeted the house. Though she had started her first quilt at 15, it wasn't until Great Falls that she began to quilt in earnest. Her beloved Grandma Annie sent quilt tops and Johnnie Mae made warm quilts for the cold Montana winters. In the ensuing years she made more than 150 quilts, all "hand-did." Many of us sleep under her warm, durable works of art and love and enjoy walking on warm wool rugs.
After Rich retired from the Air Force, and went to work for the Forest Service, he, Johnnie Mae and Tony moved to Hamilton. They built a house in 1965, and there Johnnie Mae lived until she died. She loved the views from her windows. In later years, she'd look out and say, "I look out at the green trees, blue sky, white clouds and the mountains and I think, Sure beats Oklahoma!" After Rich died in 1977 Johnnie Mae continued on. She traveled with her sisters and their husbands some, but mostly she stayed home reading, quilting, making rugs, and enjoying friendships. Always stubborn, intelligent, talented and hard-working, Johnnie Mae had a great laugh. The Hanks girls loved to laugh, and when they got together the joy was contagious. Sadly, in later years, dementia took hold. "My memory glands are drying up fast," she'd say. With the help and support of family, she was able to stay in her own home, as she had wished.
She is predeceased by her parents, her husband, daughter Jan Christine; sisters Annabelle Lewis and Georgia Dyer; brothers Teddy Warren Hanks and Del Dexter Hanks, and most of her friends. She is survived by sisters Grace Linville of California, Nadine Swindells (Mel) Kentucky, and Nancy Hale of Oklahoma. Also by daughter Lorene Hunter (Larry) of Oregon; sons Patrick Leonard (Toddy Perryman) of Corvallis, and Tony Leonard (Jill) of Utah. Grandchildren are Chris Kashmir-Green (Dennis Green) of Oregon, Eve Dixon (Charlie), of Kalispell, Matt Leonard (Cheryl) of Idaho, Morna Leonard of Hamilton, Marcus Leonard (Robin Brown) of Washington, and Tyson Robinson of Alaska. Great-grandchildren are Lisa Owens (Mark) and Jamie Bevandich (Kari), Alix and Kyle Dixon, Nathan and Pieter Leonard, and Brendan Leonard. Great-great-grandchildren are Taylor, Caden, and Jarod Bevandich. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and by long-time friends Colleen Powell and Nadine Mackey of Hamilton and Olive Shuck of Glendive. The family would like to thank the excellent caregivers who helped Johnnie Mae in her last months.
A gathering and celebration of Johnnie Mae's life will be held in Hamilton in May.

The children were placed in different families and have been difficult to track. Probate and guardianship records helped to finally get all the children sorted out. Anna came to the U.S. with sister Josie in 1920. She married Frank KARA, and he worked for International Harvester in Cicero, Illinois. When he was layed off by them in the 1930s, they moved to the Nebraska farm of Fred and Josie Kotas to work, until he was rehired. Many cases of eggs and meats were sent to them in their time of need to help them out. When times got better, they sent gifts to the Kotas family in the form of clothes and toys and other goodies over the years. (Milligan, p 353).
Josie came from Czechoslovakia in 1920, with sister Anna. When they arrived in Ellis Island at the ages of 18 and 19, their names were pinned to their clothing as they spoke no English. They were sent to live with their Aunt Josie Rozanek of Milligan. Eventually arriving at the Fairmont train depot, they were again in the arms of loved ones, even though still strangers to them, but at least they could speak Czech with them. Josie worked at Lincoln as a domestic before her marriage. Sister Anna, and her husband Frank KARA came from Illinois to live with the Kotas family for a brief time during the depression (Milligan, p 352).
His FindAGrave memorial page, created by Sue Thibodeau, has a photo. He is also shown as a son of Joseph Hanzel and Marie Kotas, who also have memorial pages at FindAGrave.
