Mary attended rural school District #67 and spent her younger years helping her parents with their farm and family. She was a devoted mother, a person of great patience and understanding, an ardent lover of nature and music and she derived a great deal of pleasure from her singing, as she had a beautiful voice. A terrific cook and baker and her kolaces, rolls and apple streudel were out of this world. For entertainment of people, she used to tell their fortunes with a deck of cards, and much of what she told people did come true. Mary was widowed at the age of 36, with five children under the age of 13, and did all kinds of odd jobs to hold her family together. For several years she and her youngest son, Joe, lived in the home of an employer, Louis and Alice Koca. Later she went into practical nursing, caring for many elderly people in their own homes, including Mr. Bosak of Crete, The Marsh's of Tobias, Frank Krupicka of Tobias, and Jan Luzum of Milligan. (Milligan, p 210)
Her Texas Death Certificate showed her as the daughter of Marcelles L. Vesey, and listed her birthplace as Jackson, Tennessee. She was widowed, and the informant was W. White, relationship unknown. She had been a resident of Houston for 30 years, thus arriving ca. 1934.

Referred to by his friends as "Long Charlie", he was vitally interested in the growth and economy of Sabine County. He was a merchant, farmer and owned a sawmill. His interest in the growth of Sabine County was such that he personally hired a geologist to come from Pennsylvania to test for oil, gas and other minerals. His aim in thi was to improve the knowledge and friendship between the politicians and the people they represented. Charles lost heavily in the depression, and also in the Texas Land Bank, so much in fact, that on Feb. 9, 1930, he suffered a stroke, from which he died two days later. The only possession we (the family) have of Harrision Vickers, Jr. and his son, Charles Harris Vickers, is a piece of gold. This money was given to Charles by his father when he was seven years old, in exchange for a 'prize pig' of which Charles was overly fond, and more than a little reluctant to part with. He was so grieved over the exchange that he never spent the money, and when my mother, Hazel, was seven years of age, he gave her this little gold piece" writes Mrs. R.G. Sherrod, a member of the JFG Chapeter of the DRT. (White and Toole, p 39)
Harrison Vickers, Jr., b Ga. ca 1812, moved to Fla. in 1817 when his father, Harrison Sr. bought land in the township of Tallahasse, Leon County. In 1834, Harrison Vickers Jr arrived in Texas. The Czech version of the given name Alice is ELIS. It is therefore likely that this is the Alice Butler, listed as a survivor of Mildred Vodicka, who died in late 2007. It is also possible that Joe and Josie Vodicka had another daughter born after the 1930 census whom they named Alice.
The 2008 obituary of her brother, Milo Vodicka, listed her as Alice Butler.

Vivian had great fun wearing antique clothing to go with the car when they would ride in parades or car tours. She also often put on "style shows" to show off the antique clothing. Together they enjoyed extensive traveling as well. Vivian was an excellent cook and enjoyed entertaining her family, cookies were always available when you stopped in to visit.
