Listed in obituaries of siblings as "of Corpus Christi, Texas."
Hugh Love Smith, Sr., age 98, of Corpus Christi and more recently, Boerne, Texas, died peacefully in the presence of his loving family on June 14, 2017. He was born at home in Geneva, Texas, in Sabine County, on January 18, 1919, to Prince Anna Dorsey Smith and Eugene Burton Smith. He was one of 10 children. His father was a farmer and later the Sheriff of Sabine County.
Hugh attended public schools in Sabine County, where he lettered for three years at Hemphill High School as an outstanding guard in basketball. On March 12, 1938, at age 19, he eloped with his beautiful, 16-year-old high school sweetheart, Era Mae Robbins. He bought her wedding ring, a gold band embossed with orange blossoms, at the drug store in Hemphill. The couple moved in 1938 to Corpus Christi, where they raised 'two children and each other' during the 76 years of their marriage.
Hugh's first job in Corpus Christi was driving a delivery truck for Samsco Supply Company, and less than a year later he landed a job with Southwestern Oil & Refining Co. (later to become Kerr-McGee). His career at Southwestern began as an unskilled laborer, and he progressed to pumper, operator, lab manager, and finally to the position of manager of marketing. During World War II, Hugh served his country by remaining at his oil refining job of producing fuel for military aircraft. He retired in 1983, after working for 44 years with the same company. He loved his job with Southwestern, and took great pride in his work and the relationships he built there.
Hugh was baptized in a creek near San Augustine at age 11 at a summer revival. After moving to Corpus Christi, he joined First Baptist Church downtown, where he participated in the Young Men's Bible Class, served as president of the Rufus Bryant Sunday School class, and worked with children at Boy's City and South Texas Children's Home. One of his most meaningful experiences was serving as an enthusiastic volunteer with Gerald Smith's Boy Scout Troop 11, for whom he presented the troop's first Eagle Award. In later years at First Baptist on Ocean Drive, Hugh enjoyed attending Vernon Elmore's Pastor's Class, served on the Property and Maintenance committee, and spent 10 years doing 'porch ministry' with Johnny Thomason.
Hugh was an avid member of the Corpus Christi Camera Club, and built houses under the name 'Hugh Smith Builder' for 15 years under the mentorship of his dear friend, Frank Peerman.
One of the most fun '96 albeit frustrating -- periods of his life was his 'golf era', which began in the 1960's with a foursome which played together for over 30 years, including John Wright, Carlos Hayley, Larry Lay, and later Henry Gillespie. This evenly-matched group loved being together and insisted that it was never too hot, cold, or windy to hit the links three times a week. While Hugh threatened to 'quit that foolish game' at least 1000 times, he reluctantly hung up his golf bag in 2006 due to health problems. A member of the Corpus Christi Country Club for 40 years, he served for two years as head of the Grounds Committee, and on the Board of Directors for three years.
Hugh is preceded in death by his parents, nine of his siblings and in August 2014, his loving and faithful wife, Era Mae Smith; He is survived by a son, Hugh Love 'Clipper' Smith, Jr. and wife Nona of Vicksburg, MS; daughter, Sylvia Ann Smith Griffin and husband Paul, of Boerne, TX; six grandchildren: Stephen Smith and wife Sherri of San Antonio, Jim 'Kelly' Smith and wife Kelly of Vicksburg, MS, Abney Smith Clardy and husband Trey of Mendenhall, MS, Robin Smith of Vicksburg, MS, Chris Griffin and wife Ashleigh of Austin, TX, and Cindy Griffin Carr and husband Brian of Boerne,TX twelve great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Hugh was delighted -- a mere ten days prior to his death -- to attend a family gathering to celebrate the birth of his great-great granddaughter with five generations together at one time. On that day, Hugh was able to affirm and bless his numerous family members and enjoy their loving company.
While Hugh's long life reflects many accomplishments, his proudest achievement by far was that of being a father to Clipper and Sylvia. He was a real 'Daddy' who was at home with his family every night and weekend. He took his kids to church, knew their teachers and their friends, and showed them by example what a life of integrity looked like.
Hugh was his most complete when he was with his best friend, soul mate and counselor -- his wife Era Mae. He loved to bring her coffee in the mornings, and in the afternoons with a little bowl of ice cream. If she was mad at him, she would get her own coffee '96 and that was the worst possible punishment she could give him! They used to love dancing, and they would have small tea dances with their friends in the living room, and the kids would peek at them, thinking they looked just like Fred and Ginger. They took wonderful, winsome photographs together and developed them in their own darkroom. They held hands. They could read each others' minds. They loved each other deeply.
The final years of Hugh and Era Mae's lives were spent living in Boerne, Texas at the Morningside Ministry at Menger Springs retirement living facility. They attended First Baptist Church in Boerne as long as they were able, and when they could no longer attend, they were visited faithfully by Pastor Mike Harkrider. The family is so grateful for the caring attention of many, including Shawna Barron, Bryce Boddie, Ulysses Flores, and Amy Castro of Alamo Hospice, Yessika Rodriguez of Nurse Next Door, Sandra, Sylvia, Monty and numerous others of the Cibolo House at Menger Springs.
A family Memorial Celebration will be held in Boerne, TX in late June with a graveside service held in Geneva, TX at a yet to be determined date.

His Texas Death Certificate showed he was a retired merchant, and listed his place of birth as Lithuania. Father was shown as Solomon Smith, and for this mother, there was "no record" of her maiden name. The informant was his wife.
Kovno was a governorate of Russia, and is known as Kaunas, the second largest city in present day Lithuania. Prior to the Second World War, Kaunas, like many cities in eastern Europe, had a significant Jewish population. According to the Russian census of 1897, Jews numbered 25,500, 35.3% of the total of 73,500. The population was recorded as 25.8% Russian, 22.7% Polish, 6.6% Lithuanian. They established numerous schuls and synagogues, and were important for centuries to the culture and business of the city.
The 1920 Texas census shows he and both his parents as born in Russia, and his year of immigration as 1902, and that he became a naturalized citizen of the U.S. in 1907. His occupation was listed as merchant, dry good store.
The 1930 census showed Hyman born in Lativa, and Betty born in Poland, with both sons incorrectly shown as born in Texas. He was shown as a retail merchant of Dry Goods, and Betty was a sales lady at their store. The home they lived in was valued at $5,000.

At the time of the 1930 Federal census, Ilo was listed as single, and living in Oscoda, Iosco County, Michigan, as rooming in the Alvin Dunsmore home, along with two other teachers.
It is possible that she married briefly at some point as a young woman. In the "Marriages" section of the family bible belonging to her sister Avis, "Ilo and Dale Shelterly" are listed as witnesses to the 1926 marriage of Avis to Ben F. Benkelman.
Tom McLemore-who later married Ilo's niece Bonnie-said that Ilo told him she had been married briefly, but had never told her niece about this marriage. There was a Dale B. Shelterley listed on the 1930 census, in Sebewa, Ionia County, Michigan. He was listed as single, and age 22, some six years younger than Ilo. He would have been 18 in 1926, so this could be a possibility. Dale was a son of Ozro B and Lillie C. Shelterley.
Ilo married Robert Shelden later in life. She never had children. Her second husband had grown children from a prior marriage.
Her niece, Bonnie, recalls that Ilo worked as a cartographer for the Greyhound bus line. She later became a travel agent, and traveled overseas extensively. She lived in Chicago in the late 1950's and invited a co-worker, Hans Penner, and his roommate at the University of Chicago-Tom McLemore, to Thanksgiving dinner. This is where Tom and Bonnie met.
Ilo lived in Indiana in the 1970's and taught school. It was through another teacher that she met her husband, Bob Shelden. She loved to work with her hands, and her apartment was full of crafts she had made. Her great-nieces, Melinda, Melissa, and Leigh adored her.
Ilo and Bob moved to Tuscon when they retired. They resided at 3737 North Country Club Drive. Ilo died of breast cancer at the University of Arizona Hospital in Tuscon. Bob later remarried.
Ima Lee Edgar, 76, of Hemphill died Friday, June 2, 1995, at the AMI Medical Center Hospital in Nacogdoches.
Born Aug. 14, 1918, in Sabine County as a daughter of the late Obie and Mary (Arthur) Smith, she was a lifelong resident of the area. Mrs. Edgar was a member of the Camp Springs Baptist Church and a homemaker.
She is survived by a brother, Aubrey Smith of Hemphill.
She was preceded in dehat by her husband, N. Austin Edgar, on Aug. 14, 1994.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the chapel of Starr Funeral Home Inc. in Hemphill with Bro. Lewis "Buddy" Pratt officiating. Interment followed at the Hemphill City Cemetery.

"Milam Cemetery receives marker"
The Texas Historic Cemetery Dedication Ceremony for Milam Cemetery took place on Saturday, October 11, following the annual Nethery reunion...local historian Weldon McDaniel....gave a presentation outlining some of the significant historical events that took place in Milam and the importance of preserving the history of Milam Cemetery. He said as many as 85 percent of all early settlers coming into Texas put their boots in red dirt. Although San Augustine and Nacogdoches counties have a friendly battle over which is older, Milam is just as old as either of them....
Dorothy Nethery Spain had the honor of reading the script engraved on the marker:
"Milam, the first County Seat of Sabine County, has a history of travelers and visitors stretching back centuries. Native Americans and Spanish exploreres, soldiers and missionaries passed through and often camped on Las Boregas Creek. Texian settlers encountering the natural abundance echoed the words of Stephen F. Austin, who recorded in his diary entry of July 16, 1821: "We then suddenly came to an open rolling country thinly timbered soil about the color of Spanish browne, and in some places redder. This Red Land is very productive and is covered with the most luxuriant growth of grass I ever beheld in any country." The settlment first called Red Mound (Red Mount) was the seat of Government for the Sabine District since 1822, and was surveyed as a town site in 1828.
Milam Cemetery is on a high hill overlooking the historic community. The exact dated of the first burial will never be known Spanish Explorers were passing through present-day Milam as early as 1539 and camped on Las Boregas Creek a few hundred yards west of the cemetery. Local hisorians believed Anglo burials occurred here probably as early as 1775, since travelers used the campsite down the hill on the Las Boregas. The land on which the cemetery is located was granted to JOHN SMITH on Feb. 26, 1835. The first marked burial is dated 1864, although more than 100 unmarked graves are suspected. The numerous military Veterans dating back to the Creek War are interred here, as well as prominent early citizens from the CAUSEY, WEATHERRED. McGREW, and NETHERY families. Milam Cemetery may be the oldest organized cemetery in Sabine County, and cherished chronicle of generations of visitors and residents."
Robert McLemore Butler writes that he married second Mary Ann Register, born ca 1822, and died after 1871. He shows the date of marriage as 31 Mar 1858. He had also shown this second marriage as being instead to a Mary Warters.

In her annotated transcription of the Brookeland Cemetery, Kay Parker McCary lists her as JulyAnn Bell (nee Bradshaw), and indicates that her tombstone was inscribed "Wife of J. R. Bell, She lived as a Christian as a Christian Died. "
The death certificates of her sons George, Luther, and James Walter, however, all indicate that their mother's name was instead Julia Ann "Annie" SMITH. Perhaps the confusion in her last name arose due to the fact that Julia Ann's son, Bob, did marry a Julia Ann Bradshaw.

June Smith October 3, 1963
June Smith sat on the porch of his home near Pineland and regaled more than 100 persons at his 80th birthday party with tales of early days in East Texas.
Born at Sabinetown, he was the son of Henry and Martha Ann Morris Smith, and grandson of Shadrach Morris, who gave 200 acres of land in the early 1830s to found Sabinetown. His great grandfather, Gideon Morris, had donated a like amount for the founding of Morristown, Tennessee in the 1700s.
His father Henry Smith who died before he was born, came from England to teach school at Milam and Sabinetown. As a boy, he grew up the hard way, but with lots of fun and frolicking. He recalls working hard, long hours on logging rafts, floating logs to Orange. He did the cooking before he was old enough to push logs.
Frank Davis, a mail contractor, hired him at the sum of $5.00 a month to carry the mail from Hemphill to Geneva, when he was just a boy.
At the age of 18, Mr. Smith helped to move his sister and family, the Ide Russells from Louisiana across the Sabine to Sabine County. There was a post office, a church, a school, a doctor, F.S. Love and 52 families. June Smith stayed there and farmed, first with his sister's family and then with his own until recently when he had to move nearer a doctor. His wife the former Miss Vessie Brittain, is an invalid since a fall a few years ago, which broke her hip. His was the last family to leave this now deserted community. He moved over to Pineland to live in a house owned by his son, Brittain Smith, who lives nearby. He does, however, still drive over regularly to care for his cattle, fix fences and dream of wonderful years when he was raising his family there.
Not long after he helped move the Russells in an ox-drawn wagon, he met and married Miss Vessie Brittain, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. S. Brittain. There was a church wedding in 1904 with Burnis and Mattie Lou Honeycutt Vickers as attendants.
The Brittains gave the couple 67 acres on which Ide Rusell helped his brother in law build a two room house with cypress shingles, stick and dirt chimney, big rooms and wide porches. There they worked hard, were self-sustaining and gradually prospered, buying more land, clearing and raising cotton for money crop, sheep for clothing, and hogs and cattle.
Mr. Smith refused to shear the sheep, but accommodating neighbors Abb Vickers and Perkins Harvey were willing to help out. He liked to raise hogs and trained his to come when he called. There was the whole country for the cattle, sheep, goats, horses and hogs to roam in, even being taken across the river into Louisiana when grass or cane shoots were better there.
Nothing was wasted. When land needed clearing, the whole community came in to help. Cooking went on for days, with food being cooked in huge iron pots. It was a frolic for the young people, who were expected to help in the work, though. The logs were used for houses, barns, rail fences, stove wood, etc.
At butchering time, the same community spirit prevailed and the same thrift and utilization of everything. Cold weather was necessary, and the meat saved by curing the smoke. Everyone had a smokehouse, quite large with a fire of hickory wood, kept smoldering for weeks in the center of the dirt floor. Meat was hung from the rafters to absorb that hickory flavor.
"They don't make that kind of meat these days," says Mr. Smith. They made what they called souse, now known as hogshead cheese. Excessive fat was trimmed off, after the sausage meat was set aside, and rendered into lard. Big iron pots outdoors over a fire were filled with these bits of fat, which were slowly stirred until nothing was left but cracklings. From these cracklings came the family soap. Lye, leeched from hardwood ashes, mixed with the cracklings, water added and cooked until bubbly thick. When cool, this soap was stored in crocks and used at laundry time. Clothes were boiled, after being soaked in soapy water, placed on a block and battled. This was to removed embedded soil from work cloths. The Smiths owned a "crackling squeezer", a luxury in those days, which squeezed the last bit of grease from the fat. Cracklings were also delicious cooked in cornbread. They also had a fine sausage mill.
Once Mr. Smith's four year old daughter, Eula, caught her finger in the sausage mill. Afraid to turn the mill for fear it would cut off her ginger, they carried her to Dr. Love, sausage hanging by a bit of skin. The doctor splinted it up and Eula, now Mrs. Judge Cordray, has her finger just a bit scarred.
Mr. Smith was active in church and community affairs. When the Rev CA Perkins an outstanding evangelist in the area, established the Methodist Sabine Circuit with both sides of the river as his charge, he credited Mr. Smith with being a factor in its establishment. He also owned the second car in Sabine County, a beautiful Model T Ford.
Besides Mrs. Cordray of Isla community, his children are Mrs. Zelma Blasingame of Garland, Texas, Reece Smith of the Sexton community, Brittain Smith of Pineland, and Aldous Smith, a Methodist Minister, of Dayton, Bulah, who married Roy Allen, died in 1930 and Clarence died in 1928. There are 19 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
