She appears to have been the daughter of J. B. and Emma Rackley (both born in Tennessee), who can be found in Kemp, Bryan County, Oklahoma at the time of the 1930 Federal census.
He was the son of Mathias Raczek, a farmer, and Anna Simpartle, daughter of Simon Simpartl and Eva Kreplin of Stisch, Czechoslovakia.
The following is excerpted from a two page typewritten paper from the Racek reunion of June 25, 1972 (Courtesy of Caroline Mastny)
Great Grand Father Matias (Mike) and Great Grand Mother (Born Suchy) Racek, with their three sons Mike, Jim, and Joe, and one daughter who married a Mensik came to Nebraska about 1868. they came from Czechoslovakia to an Illinois town (unknown). There (he) worked for a cattle feeder for about a year. He outfitted them with a old team of horses, wagon with a cover and a horned cow, and 25 cents in their pockets. They got halfway across Iowa when one of the horses died. There they stayed for more than a year. They started out of Iowa with a horse and cow to homestead in Nebraska. They followed the Platte River on the north side till they came to the town of North Bend. The river was too deep to cross. They met an Indian that knew how to speak a little English, he guided them to a crossing further west towards the present town of Linwood, where they crossed.
They intended to homestead land at Linwood whre the Tahacek farm currently is. There was a Pawnee Indian camp on the Skull Creek where they intended to homestead, so they traveled east and camped on the Homer land west of Morse Bluff. From there they started looking for land to homestead but could only get one eighty. From there they returned where they came in contact with a land agent. He told them there were three eighties together for homesteading south of Morse Bluff. Which are now owned by Uncle John and Aunt Julia Vachal, Lewis Racek, Emma Hunt and Ed Virka. One brother, Joe Racek was not of age to homestead so he went to Omaha to work. Before he became of age to homestead, the homestead act was discontinued. They built a sod house on a fence line between the present Virka and Lewis Racek land.
They just about lost their homestead rights for having one home for two homesteads. They wanted to live together..but the homestead act read one home for each homestead. Lewis Racek told us that when he and the Virka's were making a fence they came upon some stove lids and other articles so he figured that was where the sod house once was.
After they got they Homestead claim the brothers would work in Omaha three days a week. They worked for the City of Omaha leveling hills for 25 cents a day. They would also work two days on the homestead. They walked to work one day there and one day back.
Great Grandmother was killed by a horned cow that they bought with them from Illinois. She is buried on a hill side east of Morse Bluff which is an abandoned cemetery with unmarked graves. Great Grandfather Racek is buried in the Killian Cemetery west of Morse Bluff.

Helen graduated from Milligan High School in 1933, and studied Normal Training, including taking education courses through the University of Nebraska. She taught in several rural schools in Saline County. During winter the pupils surrounded the pot belly stove with their lunch pails in hopes of having their food at least room temperature. Teachers were the janitors and even carried in the coal and cobs from outdoors. After many years of helping her husband with the family farm, her interest in youth led her to seek employment at the Youth Development Center in Geneva, Nebraska in 1971. She retired in 1985. Son of Isaac Rains and Sabine Barr (dwelling 14 of this census). Alanson and Sarah had 10 known children in Sabine Parish. (Casagranda, 1850 Census, 83).
Isaac purchased 39.83 acres of land from Natchitoches Land Office, September 1, 1849 by cash sale. He has seven known children. Living with the family at the time of the 1850 Sabine Parish censu is 10 year old Cynthia A. Anderson. Casagranda believes she is the daughter of Wade Anderson (brother of Mahala Anderson Raines) and Emaline Vines. Also living in the home was 38 year old Thomas Raines, believed to be a brother or other relative of Isaac's. (Casagranda, 1850 Census, 24).
Note: Another Jas K.P. Raines, born circa 1843, lived in Sabine Parish, Louisiana at the same time. The other Jas. was the son of John J. and Martha Raines of Tennessee. They lived in household 30. It appears likely that John J. Raines and Isaac Raines were closely related.
Neither John or Martha are listed on the Sabine Parish Cemetery index, according to Casagranda. It is likely that this John Raines is related to Isaac Raines in Dwelling 14 due to their ages and the names of their children.

RAMSEY, BEN (1903-1985). Ben Ramsey, Texas state legislator, secretary of state, lieutenant governor, and railroad commissioner, was born at San Augustine on December 28, 1903, the son of William Charles Ramsey. He attended San Augustine public schools and worked on the family farm. After finishing high school, he worked three years in his father's law and abstract office, then enrolled at the University of Texas. He passed the state bar examination before graduation and was licensed to practice law in 1931. Ramsey was elected state representative and served two terms. Afterward he returned to San Augustine to practice law with his brother for five years. In 1940 he was elected to the first of two four-year terms as state senator. He became a Senate leader in antideficit legislation and legislation to regulate labor unions. In 1949 Governor Beauford H. Jester chose Ramsey to be secretary of state . In 1950 Ramsey was elected lieutenant governor. When Governor Allan Shivers 's conservative branch of Texas Democrats clashed with the state's more liberal Democrats, led by Senate majority leader Lyndon B. Johnson and Speaker Samuel T. (Sam) Rayburn of Texas, the two factions agreed to support Ramsey as a member of the National Democratic Committee.
In fiscal affairs, especially opposition to higher taxes, Ramsey was considered conservative. Despite this, he supported Governor Shivers in raising revenue necessary for higher teachers' pay, state hospitals, and prisons. Like Shivers he was an enemy of labor unions. He strongly supported rural electrification, water conservation and development, paving of farms roads, and stricter laws regulating what he called "fly-by-night insurance companies." In 1961 Gov. Price Daniel?sup? ?/sup?appointed him to the Railroad Commission . The next year he was elected to the unexpired term and in 1964 and 1970 was reelected to full six-year terms. He served three two-year terms as chairman. Just before his appointment to the commission, Texas was successful in achieving control over offshore oil (?i?see?/i? TIDELANDS CONTROVERSY ), and Ramsey helped compose the rules for Texas coastal drilling. He chose not to run for reelection in 1976. Ramsey married Florine Hankla of San Augustine, and the couple had three children. He died on March 27, 1985, in Austin and was buried in San Augustine.

Memory Walk Brick--This is one of the 650 engraved bricks that will make up the San Augustine Garden Club's "Memory Walk" on the Southwest part of the Courthouse lawn. This brick was on the top of the stack when the Garden Club received the shipment this past week. This particular brick is in honor of Lurette Mitchell, an elementary teacher for over 40 years, most of those years spent in the San Augustine Schools. Mrs. Mitchell now resides at Twin Lakes Care Center.
The May 10, 2007 issue of the San Augustine Tribune featured a photo of a Teacher's Reception held at the Twin Lakes Center. Lurette Mitchell was pictured, and it was noted that she taught for 47 years mostly 2nd grade, starting out in a one-room school in the Harmony Community, later teaching in San Augustine.

When Galen Rarick died last June 15 in Eugene, the university community and the field of journalism education lost more than a distinguished scholar and good friend. Professor Rarick was one of the true and few renaissance figures in a professional field known for its diversity.
Galen was a bridge, bringing together people from different and often competing disciplines. He spoke the languages of art and technology, of business and philosophy. Better still, he was known to students and colleagues alike as a warm, caring person a man who put other people first.
He also, fortunately, put the University of Oregon first. When he was recruited in 1962 to develop the School of Journalism's program in communication theory and research, the faculty recognized it was a coup to attract this Stanford Ph.D.with strong journalism credentials. He soon became one of the most respected journalism educators in the country.
It was almost inevitable that Oregon would lose him to a larger university. In 1967, he went to Ohio State, where he cemented his reputation for significant research into newspaper policies and practices. But he was persuaded to return to Eugene as dean in 1976, where his skills guided the school successfully through an era of dwindling resources.
Galen served as dean for five years, earning the trust and admiration of faculty for what one of his colleagues, Roy Paul Nelson, described as "uncommon patience and disarming determination." Another emeritus professor, Jack Ewan, called Galen "The Great Negotiator." Galen returned to the teaching faculty in 1981, completing 16 years with the school before retiring from full time teaching in 1987.
He was born April 28, 1923 in Muncie, Indiana, into a devoted and close family that included five sisters and two brothers. After receiving a bachelor's degree from the University of Denver and a master's from Stanford, Galen embarked on a 10 year journalism career that included three years as the owner and publisher of a weekly newspaper in Mississippi and three years on the staff of the Congressional Quarterly in Washington.
After returning to Stanford for doctoral studies, Galen taught at Hardin Simmons University and UC Berkeley before coming to University of Oregon. But the most significant and satisfying event in Galen's adult life was his marriage in 1952 to Betty Lou Johnson. They enjoyed a close and loving relationship until her death in 1992. Two sons, Jeff of Keizer, Oregon, and Ethan of Walnut Creek, California, survive them.
Galen Rarick will be remembered for many qualities, but perhaps no more endearing than his well developed sense of irony, his mastery of the art of understatement and his good natured wit. They combined to make him a master story teller. He will be missed.
