Lynell Cordell's brother, Harold, started to school at Payne School. His teacher was Gladys Payne, wife of Dukey Payne. Their children were Virginia and Tommy. Gladys also had a brother, Bill Powell, who taught school both in Payne and Arthur, therefore it is assumed her maiden name was POWELL.
Gladys was said to be related to Lily Rowe, wife of Emory Howard Gentry; however, the connection, if any, would appear to be remote.
Dukey died in 1953, with Gladys surviving until 1995. She was said to have remarried after his death. She and Dukey, however, are buried side by side with a double tombstone. Above her name, DIEFENBAKER is also engraved. This was her name at the time of her death, as noted on the SSDI entry below, and was the surname of her second husband, Roy Diefenbaker. Lyn Cordell recalls that Roy worked in a western clothing store here in town and wore what he sold, so he was the best dressed cowboy around!

Roswell, N.M. -- Gladys Payne Diefenbaker, 88, of Artesia, N.M., died Thursday, Jan. 19, 1995, in Roswell.
Mrs. Diefenbaker was the daughter of William and Minnie Powell and was born in Stephens County near Duncan on March 22, 1906.
She was a graduate of Tuttle High School and received her bachelor's degree from Central State College in Edmond. She taught school for several years in Oklahoma before marrying John Earl Payne on Oct. 13, 1931, in Chickasha.
After the death of her first husband she married Ray Diefenbaker in Santa Fe, N.M., on June 4, 1960. He died Dec. 1, 1990.
Mrs. Diefenbaker taught school in Oklahoma and New Mexico for over 40 years. She was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Mrs. Diefenbaker is survived by a daughter, Virginia Strain Oller, of Artesia, a sister, Minnie Mae Powell, of Artesia; four grandchildren, Jenny Lynn Heffington and Rick Strain, both of Duncan, and T. J. and Johnny Payne, both of Ohio; and seven great-grandchildren.
(Research):This MIGHT be Gladys with her family at the time of the 1910 and 1920 census. It is noted that she did have an older brother, Wilmer, who might be the Bill Powell she taught with at Arthur School. More research should be done to verify that this is the same Gladys Powell.

In her letter dated September 4, 1999, Carolyn Lockhart writes "Malichi Morgan served in the same Texas Cavalry as my John A. Powell did. John Powell is buried in a confederate cemetery at Camp Butler, Illinois with a rebel marker which is pointed at the top, so the Yankee's couldn't sit on it. He left a wife Lucy Thomas (who later married John Lee) and two small children, John Walter Powell & Emma Luvenia." A photo of his tombstone is shown on FindAGrave. His Texas Death Certificate shows he was an Airman Second Class in the U.S. Air Force and married at the time of his death. He served during the Korean conflict. His residence at the time of his death was 3001 Hillcroft, #141. Informant was Joe Young Jr. Powell.
National Cemetery Administration. U.S. Veterans Gravesites, ca.1775-2006 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations Inc, 2006. shows that he served as a A1C US Air Force Korea, with a service start date of 12 Dec 1951.
In a Morgan Descendancy chart posted on the internet, the nickname "Jefferson" was shown for John Walter Powell. Carolyn Powell Lockhart indicates that her great grandfather was John Walter Powell, and that to her knowledge he was never called by that nickname. Carolyn indicated that he remarried after his wife's death and he and his second wife moved to Merryville. Ruby Burkett notes that If Martha Ann died on March 23, 1913, there is some confusing information here. Her family story was that when "Aunt Minnie Maysel Boyett was married to Andy Arrington Fuller on May 13, 1913, they moved into a two room apartment in the home of her Aunt and uncle Martha Ann and Walter Powell in Merryville. Martha Ann was known as Aunt Babe. Their home was just behind, what I supose, is the present City Hall in Merryville. Of course much has changed in Merryville. I can assume that Martha Ann was dear to my grand-mother, Henrietta Jones Boyett, because she named one of her daughters Martha Ann and she was also called Babe"
His Texas Death Certificate shows that although he was a resident of Merryville, LA at the time of his death, he died in Voth, Texas. His father was shown as John Powell, born in Arkansas, and his mother, Lucy Thomas, born in Texas.

The digital image of her actual Texas Death Certificate, viewable online at FamilySearch.org, Texas Deaths, 1890-1976, shows her as the daughter of Henry Powell, Mississippi, and Nancy Burch, Mississippi. The informant was Mrs. J. Kirby Hill. She was widowed at the time of her death, and her home address was 2345 Victoria, Beaumont, Texas.
During World War II, Minnie McLemore Morgan and Beulah McLemore Dougharty were over at Lee and Othalia's making cookies to send to the boys overseas. Minnie and Beulah were shelling pecans out on the back porch. Beulah asked Othalia how long a broom lasted her. Othalia, stirring the cookies in the kitchen, replied "Mine always last me a year." To which Beulah, looking at the floor, remarked, "Othalia, if you'd clean out these cracks that broom wouldn't last a week." (Submitted by Othalia McLemore on 7/14/81)
Although her given name is Mary Othalia, granddaughter Deann noted she uses only her middle name. Her family members also affectionately called her Mackie.
Deann also writes that "Othalia named her first child and when her Mama got there she changed his name and said, 'His name is Robert Lee.' Then when my Daddy was born Mackie named him 'Willy Gerald' (or something like that) and her Mama got there and said, 'No, his name is Billy Deryle' (Deryle rhymes with girl...'Dirl' and not 'Darryl'). When her third child was born, Mackie just waited until her Mama got there so she could name him."

In SABINE COUNTY GENEALOGICAL RECORDS, p 42, there are several paragraphs about the Prather lineage in England and Colonial America. Stephen Prather was listed as a Colonel, and said to have served in the War of 1812, under Gen. Andrew Jackson, and in the Fredonian Rebellion of 1826 at Nacogdoches, Texas.
Harry Noble wrote that "Stephen Prather had heard about the Fredonians, their proclamation, the fifteen day compliance edict, and the camp of soldiers near John Sprowl's place east of the Ayish Bayou. Because of his influence with the Indians, he was able to raise a small force under his command, all painted and dressed for war. Along the way he gathered nine white men, counting himself. The others were his two sons, Stephen and Freeman PRATHER, Ross BRIDGERS, James BRIDGERS, Sr., James BRIDGERS, Jr., Joe McGINNIS, Peter GALLOWAY, and Alexander HORTON. He marched his motley crew that night to within a hundred yards of the Fredonian's fort (two double log houses), dismounted, tied the horses, and waited for daylight. At dawn, after admonishing his men not to fire until fired upon, Prather marched his men in battle formation to the fort. At fifty yards he gave the command to charge, which they did. At the same time, the sixty Indians raised a resounding war whoop, according to the memoirs of Alexander HORTON, "a most dreadful yell."
Caught completely by surprise, and so throughly unnerved by the painted, screaming Indians, the Fredonians threw down their arms and begged for quarters. Without firing a shot, Stephen Prather and his little band had captured the entire encampment of Fredonians---about a hundred men. He set up an ambush for the Fredonian reinforcements that were on the way from Nacogdoches near William GARRET's place. He captured another hundred prisoners this way. They started a march for Nacogdoches to confront Hayden EDWARDS and the few troops loyal to him, but got word that Colonel EDWARDS had learned of the defeat and fled to the United States at Haley's Ferry, near present day Logansport. Stephen PRATHER, along with his band of eight white men and sixty painted Indians, had put an end to the Fredonian Rebellion without firing a shot.
