Jane A. "Xan" Alexander emailed, in November 2011, that Robert McLemore wrote his will 14 Apr 1822. In his will and the probate file in Williamson County, Tennessee, we find: "beloved wife Peggy and our four children John Dabney McLemore, Polly Minor McLemore, Robert Weakly McLemore, and Peggy Smith McLemore"; "son Atkins J McLemore", "my daughter Bethenia Anne Greene McLemore" In the will he also says "I desire that my worthy friend Daniel Perkins should be guardian to my daughter Bethenia (who is also his granddaughter)". Thus we see that Atkins Jefferson McLemore and Bethenia Anne Greene McLemore were not children of Robert McLemore's last wife Peggy. Jane added that the current wife at the time of his death was Margaret "Peggy" S Dabney, daughter of John Dabney and Peggy Smith and sister to Bethenia Dabney who later married Atkins Jefferson McLemore.
A direct male descendant of Robert McLEMORE is an exact 12 marker Y DNA match to descendants of both John McLEMORE, born 1822 in North Carolina and Keton Jones McLEMORE, born 1809 in Kentucky. This means there is an 80% probability that they share a common ancestor within the last 16 generations, and over a 90% probability that this ancestor occurred within 24 generations.

The members of R1b are believed to be the descendants of the first modern humans who entered Europe about 35,000-40,000 years ago. Those R1b forebearers were the people who painted the beautiful art in the caves in Spain and France. They were the contemporaries (and perhaps exterminators) of the European Neanderthals. R1b is the most common Y haplogroup in Europe - more than half of men of European descent belong to R1b. Fourteen of the 30 most common haplotypes in the YSTR.org database are typical of R1b.

ROBERT WEAKLY McLEMORE born Williamson Co., Tenn., April 7, 1819; died Pulaski, Tenn., Nov. 6, 1897; married Harriet Susan Figuers, Sept. 16, 1840; 7 children. [Published December 23, 1897].
A scan of letter written by John R. Kemp, of Clinton KY, in memory of Robert Weakley McLemore is posted on his FindAGrave memorial page. This was said to have been published on December 10. 1897 in the Columbia Herald. Excerpts of this letter are transcribed below:
"......Robert W. McLemore, the loving husband, indulgent father, true christian, chivalric southern gentleman, and best of friends, after a long and useful life "has passed over the river and is now resting under the shade of the trees." As one who knew and loved him well, I would that I had the power to express the feelings of heart.....And as I think of his dear wife and children, and what he was to them, I feel that I could have died for him. I think of the dear, grand old home at "Everbright" and what a home it was-father, mother, sisters and brothers, not a link broken with no cares updon them their their suffering Southland, the scene of war and carnage. The home of wounded Confederate soldiers, and where the writer almost unto death was nursed back to life by this dear family. "A Confederate Soldier" was the password with threw open wide his doors and brought lvoing hears and unwearied attention......Farewell to thee, much loved and truest of friends. May the sod of beautiful Rose Hill rest above the nobel form, and at last may there be a happy reunion of all you loved here in the paridise of God."

Diane McLemore Kennedy emailed, in May 2012, that " If I remember my granddaddy's stories correctly, he had 16 or 18 siblings. Robert left home at age 12 or 13 because he didn't like working on the farm in Mississippi. He traveled (on foot) from Mississippi to Texas. He was a carpenter by trade. I know Robert was in the military during WWI. The McLemore name did not go past my dad's generation. My dad had 4 daughters and his brother had one son that died without any offspring." Diane instead shows his year of birth as 1892.
Melba Gene McLemore notes that his registration for the Draft During WWI shows him as a carpenter for Shaw Construction Company in Sweetwater, Texas.

There was a Robina McLamore who was born in Tennessee, and was a lodger at a home in Dallas at the time of the 1910 census. However, she was listed as born ca 1884, so this may not be the same person. Her occupation was that of Secretary and Treasurer at a Telegraph office. The same Robina McLemore, now listed as a private secretary at a Telegraph office, was still boarding in a home in Dallas in 1920. The 1920 census puts her year of birth as ca. 1880. She again was listed as born in Tennessee.
The Texas Death index has a record for a Robina McLemore, married, dying on February 3, 1964 in Taylor County, Texas.
The image of her actual Texas Death certificate can be viewed online at FamilySearch.org, Texas Deaths, 1890-1976. She was shown as Robina McLemore, born in SpringHill, Texas to John Dobney McLemore and Lesly Anne Pope. The informant was Mrs. J. Caro Russell. Her residence prior to death was 2310 South 7th in Abilene. Her occupation was shown as Secretery, retired, for Western Union, and she was listed as never married. She was buried at the Masonic cemetery in Abilene.
Tom McLemore recalls that Roland served both in the Civilian Conservation Corps, and as a Marine. He died of Meningitis, most probably while serving as a Marine.
One internet tree, unsourced, shows that he died in Colorado.
Shown as Romie "Buster" in the obituary of his brother Carl, married to a Lois.
His Texas Death Certificate showed his usual occupation as Dragline Operator in Construction. He had lived in Houston for 10 years prior to his death. He was listed as married, and not a veteran. The informant was Romie Ira McLEmore.
Rosa was interviewed by a grandson in 1941, and her detailed description of the family makeup was the starting point for much of the subsequent genealogical research done regarding the Keeton Jones McLemore family. She loved to fish, a trait she passed on to her granddaughter, Barbara Nixon.
In 1944, a few years after her husband's death, Rosa was living at 8005 Grafton Street in Houston.
In a November, 1954 letter to his niece, Pleasant informs her that his sister Rosa had recently been diagnosed with "cancer on (her) lower intestine", a fact that her sons knew but did not want their mother informed of.

When her husband was killed in 1863, Rosa was left with five children, all under the age of 12. She never remarried and remained focused on her family's survival during the desperate times of the Reconstruction. After the war she moved her family to Copiah County, MS and engaged in land speculation with her brother, John Thomas McLemore. By 1878 she had moved her family back to Perry County. The 1880 US Census lists Rosa with all her children living in the same household except daughter Sebelle R who had married Abraham L. FAIRCHILD. Here in Perry (now Forrest) County, Rosa lived out her life until she died believed to be after 1900 on the old John McLemore property and was buried in the family cemetery. Rufus worked in the lumber yards, and in 1910, he was living in the Wilson Boarding house.
He was killed accidentally by a cousin of when he was 26. They and some friends had been drinking, and it was said that they were chasing each other on horseback with guns. Grover Eddings, a brother-in-law of Vessie McLemore, lived nearby the scene of the tragedy, and remembers tending to Rufus's body while the crowd waited for his parents to arrive.
Rufus's mother, Ruth White McLemore, was so overcome with bereavement that she kept her head bowed down for well over a year after his death. A picture of the unveiling of his tomb exists. The marker indicated he was a member of the Woodsmen of the World. His tombstone is inscribed "Asleep In Jesus - A loving son awaiting in Heaven for Mama to come."
Melba Gene McLemore notes that Rufus entered into several land transactions recorded at the Little Rock land office in 1856.
Melba Gene McLemore shows that he enlisted in the confederate forces as a Private as part of the 26th Arkansas Infantry, Company C, at Pine Bluff, Arkansas on 12 May 1862. He died in a hospital in Little Rock Arkansas on July 18, 1862. His brother, Sterling Columbus, died in the same hospital just a few days later. His older brother, John, had also died in a hospital in Little Rock three months previously.

Obituary

Ruth Speights
Funeral services for Ruth Elvie Speights, 86, of Pineland were at 2 pm March 20 in the Starr Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Hemphill Cemetery.
Mrs. Speights died at 12:45 am March 19 in Hines Nursing Home in Pineland.
She was a lifelong resident of Sabine County.
Survivors include three daughters Mrs. Dorine Robinson of Pineland; Mrs. Laverne Gellatly of Beaumont and Mrs. Johnnie Hughes of Shreveport, La; one sister Mrs. Emma Cammack of Hemphill, three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Mrs. W. B. Smithson, widow of William Burr Smithson, former prominent lawyer and State Senator, died at the Pulaski Hospital about 3 o'clock Friday morning of pneumonia, following an acute illness which began only a few hours before her death. Mrs. Smithson had been at the hospital for about three months recovering from a hip fracture received in a fall at her home, and was so much improved that she had expected to leave the hospital this week. So her unexpected death was a great shock to her relatives and friends.
Dr. G. A. Morgan conducted the funeral rites Sunday afternoon at her late home and burial was in Maplewood Cemetery beside her husband who died about nine years ago.
Mrs. Smithson formerly was Miss Sallie Reese McLemore, of Spring Hill, her mother having been Harriet Susan Figuers. She married Mr. Smithson on Nov. 21, 1882, and had been a resident of Pulaski since then. She was a member of one of Maury County's most aristocratic families, and "Everbright" her ancestral home at Spring Hill was the scene of many brilliant social events both before and after the Civil War.
Mrs. Smithson was a woman of superior qualities and possessed a generous nature, genial disposition and intelligence and practical sense of a high order, and was noted for her love of flowers, shrubs, trees, and pretty landscape effects and devoted much time and energy to their culture. Ane the beautiful home which she sometimes called "Everbright" is a testimonial of her work.
Left with the responsibility of managing the estate left by her husband she did so in a way which reflected credit on her efficiency and good judgment. She was a home-loving woman, and spent most of the time looking after her home and its requirements. She had long been a loyal member of the Methodist Church.
Surviving are: Nephews, R. N. McLemore, Columbia; W. T. McLemore, Nashville; W. F. Warfield, Houston, Texas; T. M. Rogers, Florence, Ala., Norfleet McLemore, St. Louis, Mo.; Nieces, Miss Olive Rogers, Florence, Ala.; Mrs. J. W. Love, Chattanooga; Mrs. H. L. VanHook, Oklahoma City, Okla.; Mrs. Eaton Elder, Memphis; Mrs. Gordon Craig, St. Louis, Mo.; Mrs. Elizabeth McComb, New York, N. Y.; Mrs. J. J. McCabe, New York, N. Y.; Mrs. W. W. Shea, Nashville.
As noted, Burwell's will, in addition to omitting any mention of his wife, Amy, also omitted his eldest daughter Sally whose birth was registered in the Albemarle Parish Register. Jim therefore presumed that neither Amy or Sally survived to the date of the execution of the will (1793), and Sally probably died in her youth, unmarried. (James L. McLemore, III, p. 73). Her baptism sponsors were her Aunt and Uncle, Robert and Lydia Magee, as well as a Gilliam.
Jim White (jim4@whitesnet.net) indicates, however, that Sally did survive her childhood, m: Henry Harrison & died before 1780 Southampton County Virginia.
(Research):Burwell and Amy McLemore had a large family: eleven children in all have been identified, but only two had their births recorded in the Albemarle Parish Register. The first was Sally, born June 2, 1754, and baptized August 25, 1754. Sponsors or godparents included her aunt and uncle, Robert and Lydia MAGEE, as well as a GILLIAM. (James L. McLemore, III, p. 70).
Could this be the Sally (Mary?) McLemore that married William Bethurum in 1805?
Several sources show "William Bethurum marriage to Mary McLemore 5 Apr 1805, Pulaski Co., KY", though in some sources the wifes name is shown as Sally. William Bethurum was said to be a neighbor of Sterling McLemore, Sally's eldest brother.
"Believed to be the Sarah B. McLemore who married John ANDLETON on December 21, 1835. However, she was described as daughter of Sally B. McLemore; since she was apparently the only Sally around at the time, it appears the clerk repeated the bride's name in the place where her mother's (Elizabeth) should have gone, but this is by no means clear (Southampton Marriage Register, p. 4). (James L. McLemore, III, p. 67). Eldon and Ann McLemore of Derby, Kansas, instead show her husband's last name as ANBLETON.
Shown on the "Harrison-Wineland Connection" tree at WorldConnect as a child of John Alexander McLemore and Eliza Ellen Carson. On this same tree, John Alexander McLemore is shown as a son of John K. McLemore and Ruth Steelman, and grandson of Ephraim McLemore and Hannah Hudspeth. Eliza Carson is shown as a daughter of Charles Campbell Carson and Elizabeth Dysart of Washington County, Virginia. Findagrave.com shows Eliza as being buried at the Samuel Denny Cemetery, Salem, Washington County, Indiana.

SAMUEL DUARD McLEMORE: The Long and The Short of It.
T.F. McLemore lived at 2401 Forrest in Beaumont and Duard lived nearby. He drove past the house every day in his 1935 Ford, which had a very low seat. Duard was rather short, and so his head was also very low (in the car). One day, as he came around the corner headed for home, some person on the front porch (it may have been Emile's wife, Grace) exclaimed "There goes Duard's car, but where's Duard?"
At the time of the 1910 Knox County, Tennessee census, he was living with her brother and sister-in-law, Andrew and Isabella, and was shown as Married 4 times.

In the process of executing her husband's will, Faith Macklemore made a distribtuion of one pound of current money to Thomas CLIFTON, the neighbor of John Macklemore, but who was not mentioned in John Sr.'s will. This distribution was actually on the behalf of their daughter Sarah Macklemore. The distribution of her bequest to Clifton indicates that he was her husband, since a married woman in that age had little in the way of property rights, and her husband had the right to receive, hold and dispose of her property. (James L. McLemore, III, p. 58). Eldon and Ann McLemore of Derby, Kansas, also show she married a CLIFTON.

May have been named for her aunt, Liza Harris. She married James Edwin WESTBROOK, brother of her own brother Ben's wife, Rosa Ann WESTBROOK. They were the parents of William Hugh, Martin Luther, Arthur Blunt, Edwin Person, Lillian Gertrude, Alice Blanche, Bessie Rae, and Lila Karen Westbrook. Memorial pages for four of their children can be found linked to her on FindAGrave.
Melba Gene McLemore notes that Rosa's papers list ONLY David O'Donovan, and not James Williams, as Sarah's husband. She was said to have had 8 children in total. No marriage record has been found for David Donovan and Sarah Elizabeth. Melba further notes that census records on David Donovan and Sarah show them to be married the same number of years as Sarah would have been married to James Williams. Additionally, in 1891, Sarah writes a letter to her step-brother Felix mentioning "Jim," and giving the impression she is writing about her husband. Melba therefore speculates that it is possible (but not proven) that James Williams may have actually changed his name to David Donovan.
Pleasant McLemore had the following to say about his sister, in a letter he wrote in January, 1955:
"sister elizabeth was grown and married, when i was born, in later life she Became a preacher, she preached in the church of god for 35 years, she died At the age of 86 with hardening of the arteries. She prayed for the sick and They got well, she used no medicine." Another family member mentioned that Sarah wrote hymns and gospel music.
The following letter, written by Sarah Elizabeth to her half-brother Felix in 1891, was transcribed by Melba Gene McLemore. Melba indicated that the original was difficult to read, both due to ink blotches and a section of the top left had corner being torn.

The image of her actual Texas Death certificate can be viewed online at FamilySearch.org, Texas Deaths, 1890-1976. Her name at the time of her death was shown as Elizabeth McLemore Hewitt, and she was shown as born in Memphis, Tennessee to John C. McLemore and Elizabeth Pope. Prior to her death, she was a resident of the Christian Home for the Aged in Houston. She died as a result of a fractured hip some five months prior to her death. She was shown as divorced, and although she died in Houston, Texas, her body was removed to Memphis, Tennessee for burial at the Elmwood Cemetery.
Paul Williams is descended from this line. He writes that after William's first wife, Eleanor Forgy, died, William hired Sarah Jane McLemore to help him care for his eight children. They eventually married, and went on to have ten children of their own. Paul also supplied the obituary, below, for Sarah Jane.

Linda Sellers Chrisman (lchrisman12@yahoo.com) emailed, in March 2014, "I would like to suggest that Sarah Joriah McLemore who married John Sellers was a daughter of Amos and Equilla/Aquilla McLemore. Sarah Joriah was born in 1806. On the 1850 census, she was listed as born in Tennessee. She married John Sellers in Perry Co., MS, around 1819. They lived in Covington, Jones, Perry, and Smith Counties. In 1818, John Sellers and Joel Holbert with Moses McLemore as assignee, purchased land in Perry Co., MS. Several of Amos and Equilla/Aquilla's children named their daughters Joriah: Moses, Richard, and Beatrice Elizabeth. In 1860, John McLemore's child Anna Maria McLemore Knight's children were living in the home of John Sellers. Sarah Joriah McLemore Sellers was believed to have died in 1859. Sarah Joriah McLemore Sellers named one of her daughter's Aquilla."

Just had the best, most rewarding Christmas present ever. I could shout from the rooftop. Had to share with the group here. While doing some genealogy research on Christmas night, I had to go on my "tree" on ancestry.com. Ancestry has a new feature in its DNA section called "Circles." Within Circles, it matches the DNA one may have with others. For the last two years I have worked on my 3rd great-grandmother's parentage. I've worked hard to find proof or a source which would spell it out in plain English. I'd put together a good case for whom they might have been using their children and descendants. Well, tonight confirmation of my theory. I matched with several of my 3rd great-grandmother's siblings' descendants in Circles!!!! Sarah Joriah McLemore Sellers was the daughter of AMOS and EQUILLA/AQUILLA MCLEMORE. I matched with their children's (Moses, Richard, John, Amos, Elizabeth, and Lavenia) descendants!!!!! The only way I could have matched was for Sarah Jori
ah to have been a sibling of Moses, Richard, John, Amos, Elizabeth, and Lavenia with a common ancestor --- Amos. This was the best proof I could have asked for. To all my Sellers and McLemore kinsmen --- yay us!!!!!
