According to the 1840 Montgomery County, Alabama census, a 50-60 year old Pleasant McLemore was living in a household consisting only of himself. In 1860, a 70 year old P. McLemore was listed as a Mechanic, and living in the home of A. McLemore---his nephew if this gentelmen are indeed Pleasant McLemore and Anderson McLemore. This household was in Moro Township, Calhoun County, Arkansas.

Pleasant was interested in family history, and several letters he wrote to family members in the mid 1940's and 1950's have been preserved. He details much of his own history in these letters. He told his niece Ivy that he was a "life long democrat." He also informed her that he "managed to drag through St. Marys College two terms, I payed my own tuition by driving a carriage..." In a 1944 letter to J. W. McLemore in Altus, Oklahoma, Pleasant wrote that "At one time, I was the leading building contractor in S.A. (San Antonio), owned my own woodworking mill. Raised race colts as a hobby, owned the fastest trotting horses in the city (a stallion) in 1909-10-11....(worked) for S.P.R.R. as a building forman...for over 7 years. I resigned to go in business for myself...." In a later letter to his niece, Ivy, he wrote that "over 500 houses in S. A. I made plans for and built them accordingly. The archtictects had much confidence in my bldg. judgement."
Pleasant also told J.W. McLemore that in 1911 he took a contract from "the Standard Oil Co. to build a gas pumping plant at Rodesa, La. I moved in Vivian. La. after completion." In Vivian, he did both commerial and residential construction. After leaving Louisiana, he settled in Houston.
He also informed both correspondents of business reverses that caused him to go bankrupt. He told his niece Ivy that "overwork was the cause of my affliction, my dr. had warned me unless I slowed down it would finally get me.
He is thought to be buried at either the Hollywood or Brookside Cemetery in Houston.

An unidentified Mary McLEMORE married a Turner NEWTON on or about March 18, 1827 (Southampton Marriage Register, p. 371), and since "Polly" is a nickname for Mary, this could have been for John's daughter. It might also be the marriage record of a daughter of either Howell or Gilliam McLemore, both sons of Burwell McLemore of Sussex County. (James L. McLemore, III, p. 65).
Melba McLemore thinks Abner may be the father of the William McLemore, born between 1832 and 1825 in Tennessee, and who lived in Mississippi near Abner and Sterling McLemore at the time of the 1870 and 1880 Federal Census enumerations.
There was another William McLemore, born between 1818 and 1821, who was living in Lawrence County, Alabama at the time of the 1860 and 1870 Federal Census enumerations. Abner McLemore was a former resident of Lawrence County, Alabama. At the time of the 1860 census, his occupation was shown as shoemaker, which is the same occupation Abner McLemore reported at the time of the 1860 census.
Both William's are good fits as possible sons of Abner McLemore, and at this time it is not known which one of them, if either, are actually his son. Both are indexed in these files with their families.
Kamala McLemore writes that he was a Pilot, head of the Civil Defense in Montgomery, and was a Col. in the Air Force. He also farmed. Under his name on his tombstone is the inscription "Inventor."
Col . R. D. Hooker, Jr. writes that "Price P. McLemore, b. 1840 and died probably in TN in 1876. He served in Co A 11th Miss Vol In, the famous "University Greys" (the entire Ole Miss student body, who enlisted in 1861), and was captured 2 days before Lee's surrender in Virginia in 1865."

Rev. William McLemore copied the following obituary from Santa (3-199):
"Death of Price P. McLemore native and member of one of Williamson Co.'s oldest families occurred Apr 27 1941] at his home in Greenwood MS. He was born in Williamson Co, son of Capt. Price and Mrs. Etta Cunningham McLemore. He was educated in Franklin schools and at Battle Ground Academy. He went to LeFlore County, Mississippi in 1898 and became one of the leading planters. He retired several years ago and moved to Greenwood. he married Miss Mary Anthony Young of Columbus, MD who died several years ago. His two sisters, Mrs. Smith S. House and Miss Birdine McLemore died a few years ago. Surviving are two sons: Price P. Jr., levy construction engineer of Elaine, Ark., and Basckervill McLemore of New Haven, Conn., also two grandchildren."

Rev. William P. McLemore shows that he attended Mississippi A & M College from 1926-1927, and later received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1928 from Sewanee (source: Sewanee Alumni directory).
At the time of the 1930 Federal census, a Price McLemore, age 25, Single, born in Mississippi with parents born in Tennessee and Mississippi, was the Manager of a General farm, and living alone in Beat 4 of Washington County, Mississippi (ED 76-16, SD 4, Sheet 13B). His father's 1941 obituary indicated he was a levy construction engineer of Elaine, Arkansas.
Rev. William P. McLemore also wrote that the 1944 Naval Reserve Reporter showed Price as LTJG commissioned in 1942. He married Vivian Hunter Loggins on 4 Apr 1946. He was at one-time the construction superintendent for H. N Rogers and Sons, Memphis, TN. Said to have died ca. October 1951 in Lake Charles, LA.
His grave marker is engraved "Lieutenant CEC USNR, World War II."
According to her father's will "I give to my daughter Priscilla McLemore one Bed & furniture which she has in possession, and after her decease to her daughter Eliza. McLemore to her heirs forever." Therefore it appears she either married a cousin, or was unmarried at the birth of her daughter, Eliza.
Appears to have been living with her brother Young at the time of the 1870 census, in Carroll County, Tennessee, along with her sister, Elizabeth. No husband is listed with her, but three children were. Might they have been hers? The children were Nancy, 14, Elizabeth 12, and Clinton, age 9. No last name is listed, and it is presumed they were McLemore's.
James Alkire (jnjalkire@sbcglobal.net) shows that Priscilla D. McLemore born 1814 TN and died May 1847 in Sangamon, married to Thomas Carsey CANTRALL, the son of Levi Cantrall. They were said to be the parents of Young M. CANTRALL, born 1838 in Sangamon, IL and died 1 July 1863 at Vicksburg, MS.
Melba Gene McLemore noted that in both the April 7, 1824 and July 5, 1826 issue of THE VILLAGE MESSENGER, published in Fayetteville, Lincoln County, Tennessee, a Wright McLEMORE was listed among those for whom dead letters were being held at the Fayetteville Post Office.
This makes him very likely a brother of Joel and Sterling McLemore, whose families were in Fayetteville, Tennessee during this same time frame.
More information can be found in the notes section of "Wright McLemore of Arkansas", born ca 1800, North Carolina.

On death certificate shown as a female, however the tombstone is engraved R. C. Vell, Son of H. C. and K. F. McLemore 1916-1918. "God's finger touched him and he slept."
Dolores McLemore McKee writes that "R.H. is his actual name. He is named [in honor of] Elisha Right and Harry Johnson. his 2 grandfathers."
His Texas Death certificate confirms this, and also shows that he was a veteran of World War II, and a plumber by trade.

The following biography is courtesy of Melba Gene McLemore, from a book titled "Mississippi" by Dunbar Rowland, pages 202 and 203:
R. S. McLemore, M. D., who for a number of years past lived retired in the attractive little city of Greenwood, Leflore county, was long known as one of the able and successful physicians of his native State, while he was a representative of one of the honored pioneer families of Mississippi, which it was his to represent as a Confederate soldier during the Civil War. Dr. McLemore was born in Alabama Aug. 28, 1837, and is a son of Col. John and Elizabeth (Marr) McLemore, native respectively of Tennessee and Alabama and both of sterling Scottish ancestry. They passed the greater portion of their lives on Carroll county, Miss., where the father was an extensive planter and a citizen of wealth and influence. Dr. McLemore completed his more purely academic education in the University of North Carolina, at Chapel Hill, being there graduated as a member of the class of 1857, with a degree of Bachelor of Arts. At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted in Company A, First Mississippi cavalry, and did yeoman service in the Confederate cause during the entire course of the war, while from 1862 to 1865 inclusive, he was principally engaged in scouting duty. After the close of the war he entered the New Orleans medical college, being there graduated, with a degree of Doctor of Medicine, in 1872, while he later took special post-graduate work in the city of Atlanta. The doctor first came to Greenwood as early as 47 and since the war made his home in the delta district of the Yazoo river with the exceptin of a period of about three years. He began the practice of his profession in Minter City, Leflore county, and floowed the work of the active physician and surgeon until 1900, when he retired, giving his supervision to his various capitalistic interests until his death with occurred on Nov. 26, 1905, while he had a most attractive residence property in the city of Greenwood. At one time he owned more than 2,000 actres of land in this section, but sold all except a fine plantation of 300 acres. The doctor traveled extensively and passed considerable time in Texas where he met with distinctive success in various business operations to which he turned his attention. Dr. McLemore was ever a staunch supporter of the cause of the Democratic party, but never sought the honors of public office of any description. In 1858 was solemnized the marriage of Dr. McLemore to Miss Marian E. Gibson, daughter of Col. I. S. and Mary (Geren) Gibson, who came to Mississippi from North Carolina, the father having been a prosperous planter and merchant. Dr. and Mrs. McLemore became the parents of six children, of whom only two are living.

Deed Book 36, page 368 lists a the inventory of the homestead of Raiford McLemore. It was valued at $61, and drawn up by Wilson Lockamy, J.P. A subsequent listing of the homestaed can be found in Deed Book 36, page 414.The value at this alternate reporting date amounts to $344.35. It is not clear for what reason these inventories were drawn up.
Ginger Riegel is a descendant of Raiford McLemore through his daughter, Louann. She shows that Raiford is the son of Archibald McLemore. However, she seems to assume, in error, that Raiford was the son of the Archibald McLemore who married Sarah Plumley and died in Monroe County, Tennessee. This could not be correct, as that Archibald McLemore is only a few years older than Raiford.

Hezikiah McLemore 30 M Laborer North Carolina Married within the year? Why isn't his wife listed?
It would seem logical that the Hezikiah in household #487, listed immediately after the Raiford McLemore family, would be the son of Raiford. However, Margaret McLemore Lee, a descendant, instead shows that Raiford is the father of a younger Hezekiah McLemore. At the time of the 1850 census, the younger Hezekiah McLemore (age 23) was newly married and living in the Northern Division of Sampson County with his wife Caroline.
Ten years later, on the 1860 census, the son of the younger Hezekiah (David A. McLemore) was living with Raiford. Therefore, the Hezikiah McLemore listed next door to Raiford in 1850 appears to be either a nephew, or a duplicate listing for his son. The Northern Division census was completed a month after the Southern Division, so it is possible that Hezekiah was listed at both locations, and with his age incorrectly noted on the earlier census. The fact that Hezikiah's was listed as married within the year, but without a wife present, lends some credence to this possibility.

David " 8 M NC "<----Grandchild per Margaret McLemore Lee
Louanna " 7 F " <-----Is she also a Grandchild???? Who are her parents then? If not a grandchild, why did he have two daughters named Louanna?
His 35 year old daughter Louanna lived in the household immediately preceding his, along with her husband Daniel Carter and 4 children. Daughter Edith "Eady", lived a few households away as well, with her husband Samuel Simmons (#602-584).
Robert McLemore Butler listed him as a son of the elder Raiford McLemore. This would seem to be a logical assumption, especially as they both have the same first name and both resided in the Southern District of Sampson County at the time of the 1850 census.
However, it appears that Raiford is more likely a son of one of Raiford's older brothers, Hezekiah, Henry or Tobias.
The older Raiford McLemore (born ca 1785-1790) did not have any male children enumerated in the proper age categories on either the 1820 or 1830 Head of Household Census. Additonally, when the elder Raiford's drew up the division of his lands in 1864, these lands were distributed to "Nancy Lockamy, Rachel McLemore, Kizzia (MAYBE a nickname for Hezekiah??) McLemore, Susanna McLemore, Edith Simmons, (and) Daniel Carter's wife, Luanna." No land was transferred to the Raiford McLemore whom was born in 1815, although it is clear from census records he was still living. And finallly, at the time of the 1850 census an even younger Raiford, this one born ca. 1835, was listed in the home of the elder Raiford. It seems unlikely he would have two living sons by the same name. However, The youngest (born 1835) Raiford did not inherit land either.
As stated above, if Raiford was not be the son of the elder Raiford, then he is likely the son of one of Raiford's brothers.
Brother Henry moved to Bladen County and later to Houston County, Georgia. Unlike Raiford, he did have sons born in the time period of 1815 to 1820, but his sons were named in his will as John Wright and Willson. Therefore, he can also be ruled out.
This leaves the potential fathers of Raiford as Hezekiah or Tobias. James L. McLemore III argues that based on later family naming patterns, he is more likely the son of Hezekiah, who appears to have left North Carolina for South Carolina. Raiford likely lived in South Carolina as a youth, and then moved back to Sampson County, North Carolina.
Tobias McLemore, a brother of the elder Raiford, did have a son who was born between 1810 and 1815, as shown on the 1830 census. His unidentified son could have been either Raiford, or Amos McLemore. Amos was born ca 1813, and married Jemima SIMMONS. However, census records he only had one son in this age category, so he could only be the father of one of the two men yet to be firmly attached to their prospective father.

When he registered for the draft during World War I, his occupation was shown as tallying lumber for T. E. Owen in Parkersburg, Sampson County, North Carolina. His nearest relative was C.S. McLemore, his mother. He was listed as age 18, tall and slender, and he had blue eyes and light hair.
He was listed in the 1909-1910 Fayetteville NC City Directory as Ralph McLEMORE, Drive...233 Davis Street
He was listed in the 1915-1916 Fayetteville NC City Directory as Ralph McLEMORE, Carpenter, 907 Person Street Wife Donia
When he registered for the draft during World War I, he was a resident of Cumberland County, North Carolina, and working as a carpenter in Portsmouth, Virginia. He was listed as married, tall, slender, with brown eyes and light hair. It was noted that his left foot had been broken. His date of birth was showsn as May 20, 1888. Bonnie Seiler instead showed him as born in 1889.

James Strain notes that: In the petition to sell the land of Jesse Edwards by his son and administrator, William Edwards, dated 8th Dec, 1836, his heirs are listed. It includes the following statement:
"And the children of Martha McLemore, deceased, wife of Moses McLemore, towit: Rebecca Williams wife of Pinckney Williams, who is a minor, and Martha McLemore, a minor under 14 years of age."
Apparently, Rebecca was married before reaching the age of 21, so still considered a minor, but her sister, Martha, was under 14 on this date.
Melba Gene McLemore notes that she married Signer/Signor ALLEN. Foide Williams, in a post to the McLemore Family Genealogy Forum, writes that: "The 1820 census of Lincoln Co, Tn (pg 14) shows Sterling C. McLemore and (pg 30) Signer Allen (who married Rebecca McLemore), Benjamin Wright (who married Hannah McLemore), James R. Brown (who married Martha McLemore), and Joel McLemore. These are all from Fayette Co, KY and apparently traveled together to Lincoln Co, TN."
Rebecca G. McLemore conveyed away her interest in her maternal grandfather's (Benj. HAILS') estate. She was the youngest child, born posthumously, the only child of Sylvia Hails McLemore. (James L. McLemore, III, p. 78).
Rosa's papers have Bell's husband as John Sheppard, a prosperous farmer in Bastrop County, both died in Houston, both buried in Smithville. Parents of 3 children.
The following letter was written to Rebecca Isabella (McLemore) Shepard shortly after the Christmas Eve & Christmas Day 1883 murders of her brothers, Thad and Wright McLemore, along with Felix McLemore's brothers-in-laws Az & Jack Batey, it is thought that Addie (Nancy Adaline) McLemore wrote this letter; it is also possible it was written by Amanda (McLemore) Ebner.
Austin Feb. 15 1884
Dear Isabelle,
I am a long time in writing but there has been nothing to write, and I want to see you so bad that writing seems like a farce. I wanted to see you so all before I left but knew it would do me no good. I don't like to say good-bye and I felt in leaving then I was leaving the best friends I had on earth.
Thought my mind would be in a better condition to contend with and have come to the conclusion that the shadow will never be lifted from my life. Well Isabell we are all here together yet. Mollie was intending to go on to Maggie's but Felix was in town when we got here and he said it would never do for her to keep on them, as she would be watched. Henry Green and Ty Jones came up on same train as we did, and next day Jhon (sic) Allen came up. There is no telling what Allen wanted . He acted in a suspicious manner. We saw Felix a day or two ago. He was intending to go down home, but was advised not to. I know that something is on the list regarding him, and know his life would not be worth much if he was down there. He is staying out with Marion Oliver now. He spoke about visiting to have you come up here to see him, and I wish you would. It would be better than for him to go down there.
We have had a fearful time ever since we been up here. It has been raining and misting all the while. The town is dull and gloomy and nothing doing. We have had no work yet but everybody says after a while times will be better. I guess they will, if not I will back away from this region. I will go slap crazy if I don't get something to do pretty soon.
I wish I could see you and the children. Don't let them forget me. I know baby will but the others may not. God knows when we will meet again or how we will all come out. If I had known what I know now, I would of never have left there or would of never stopped here . I only stopped here to be nearer to you all , thought from the way things were represented I could get plenty of work here and may after a while, but I will have to live on in the mean time. I want you all to write to me soon. This letter is to Grandmother and all. Give my love to Blanche and tell her to write.
My best love to you all,
Your aff' sister

Shown by Ann and Eldon McLemore of Kansas as a son of John McLemore and Winnie Baltice, and sibling to Wesley, Matthew, Dorcas, John and Robert. He is shown on several internet trees, unsourced, as a son of Winnie BATTICE, however no father is listed. One tree lists him as a son of Moses McLemore and Winnie Battice. Merritt Mullen, who is a descendant of Moses McLemore and Vinnie Batiste, says this is incorrect. There was no son named Reuben born to Moses McLemore or his wife Vinnie.
Ann and Eldon further note that Reuben organized a Masonic Lodge in Copiah County, MS. Filed a bond for $16,000 in Copiah. Named on the bond were Elizabeth McLemore, Virginia Marsh, Mathew McLemore and Uriah Millsap, dated 5 Dec 1860. Signed by all except Virginia. They also state that guardianship for Mary Ann Whitehead, a daughter of Dorcus, was probated for Mary Ann to Reuben McLemore, brother of her mother, on 22 Mar 1867.
They say he died when a tree fell on him.

Nicole Martin posted the following to the Genforum McLemore Surname board:
I have Reuben as son of John McLemore. Siblings, if correct, are Robert, Wesley,Reuben, Matthew, John, and Dorcus. There may be more sisters. I find John McLemore in Hinds County in 1830 and Rankin County in 1840. I believe he is the John McLemore listed in the 1810 and 1820 census in Barnwell District, SC. I also do not believe this is the son of Major John McLemore. I believe that his brothers (at least) were Howell and Matthew (see 1810 Barnwell Census). One of Matthew's grandsons, Howell W came to Hinds County to marry and then later returned to Barnwell. Later, Matthew's daughter Sarah Page moves to Copiah County. I believe Howell is the one that ended up in Emanuel County, GA.

Richard MACKLEMORE, Wright's brother, may have also begun his adult life in Virginia, as his relationship in subsequent years to Virginia McLemores in South Carolina was close. However, his first appearance in the records was with his brother Wright and latter's sons in Edgecombe County, North Carolina in 1750. He probably married there (to Agnes FRISBY), then moved by about 1758 to Craven County, South Carolina, where he is associated with members of the family of his uncle, John MACKLEMORE, and where he died about 1771. Meridian, the capital of Lauderdale county, is situated 140 miles east of the Mississippi river, from Vicksburg, and 15 miles west of the State of Alabama; being on the Mobile & Ohio Railroad, 135 miles above Mobile. It claims a population of 25,000 and is growing rapidly. The Alabama Great Southern, New Orleans & Northeastern and Alabama & Vicksburg railroads have their terminals at this point. Its location, about 1854, was the result of the proposed crossing of the Mobile & Ohio by the Alabama & Vicksburg, then known as the Vicksburg & Montgomery railroad.
Cotton and corn fields occupied its present site, surrounded by oak and pine forests over clay hills and bottom lands of the head waters of the Chickasawhay. Richard McLemore possessed most of the lands and his plantation home was the only notable residence in the vicinity. So little did the M.& O. regard the point for a while, that it was with difficulty persuaded to put in even a switch for a flag station; and when it did, called the place "Sowashee Station," from a creek near by.
L.A. Ragsdale, meanwhile, had brought out R.McLemore, and John T. Ball had purchased a tract of 80 acres, and both parties immediately began to lay off town lots. They were the pioneers. Mr. Ragsdale's plat was for "Ragsdale City;" Mr. Ball's for "Meridian," he having first secured a postoffice by that name.

Not listed his family in Louisiana on the 1850 census, but listed as an 11 year old in 1860, born in Tennessee. This should be resolved. Perhaps he is a nephew, and not a son? Or may one of both census records were in error. He may have simply been accidentally omitted in 1850, or born late in 1850 in Louisiana, and shown in error as born earlier in Tennesse in 1860.

Richard Aubrey McLemore was born June 6, 1903 in Perry County, Mississippi, the son of Hezekiah McLemore. Very early, Richard excelled in the field of education and rose to the rank of administrator in several schools. He married Nannie Pitts in 1927 and they had one son, Harry Kimbrell. In 1937, Mr. McLemore accepted a position with Judson College in Marion, Alabama. One year later, he was elected head of the Department of History at Mississipi State Teacher's College. In 1956, he was named curator of the History Department at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. In 1957 Dr. Richard Aubrey McLemore left a position as professor of history and Dean of the University of Mississippi Southern to become President of Mississippi College. Dr. McLemore undertook a decentralization of top administration by setting up the positions of Dean of the College, Business Manager, and Dean of Students. Many libraries contain the definitive History of Mississippi written by Dr. McLemore. He died August 31, 1976 and is buried in Clinton, Mississippi (sic).
If Richard was 12 to 14 (when his mother apprenticed him out in 1823), the oldest possible age at which he might logically be apprenticed, his birth date would have been, at the latest, 1810. (James L. McLemore, III, p 52).
Richard....bought 110 acres in the western part of Sussex County, near the Dinwiddie County line, from Littleton H. BROWDER by deed dated December 31, 1856, and recorded April 1, 1858 (Sussex Deed Book V, p. 645). He sold this property years later, after the Civil War, to Richard WINFIELD of Dinwiddie County, by deed (in which his wife, Mary F. McLEMORE joined) dated March 15, 1870, and recorded May 15, 1873 (Sussex Deed Book Z, p. 478). His signature was acknowledged before a Petersburg notary public indicating he may have moved there. (James L. McLemore, III, p. 53).

Riley H. McLemore contributed by Ron Henson Hugo Daily News, Hugo, Choctaw Co., Oklahoma, 31 Aug 1998 "Riley H. McLemore, 65, resident of Ft. Towson, passed away August 28, 1998 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Paris, TX. He was a heavy equipment operator/construction worker, a member of the Operating Engineers Assoc. and U.S. Army Veteran. Mr. McLemore was born June 17, 1933 in Sobol, OK to Charles Riley & Elizabeth (Boles) McLemore and had lived all his life in the Ft. Towson area. He was preceded in death by a sister, Naomi Allen, and a brother Edward McLemore. Riley had a dry sense of humor and loved "pulling your leg" and delighted in making you squirm. He would be given away by the twinkle in his eye. He loved a mess of venison, biscuits, and gravy - just good food; country music would get his toe tapping, especially waltz's. What really made him happy was fishing with James, Charles, and Alan. Many enjoyable memories were connected by a fish story. Surviving relatives include his former wife, Patricia McLemore of Hugo; one son, Ray H. McLemore of Valliant; one daughter, Jami M. McLemore of Hillsboro, Oregon; one brother, Harold McLemore and his wife, Doris, of Paris, TX; one sister, Siddie Stewart of Lubbock, TX; five grandchildren, Garrett McFadden of Phoenix, Amanda McFadden of Hillsboro, Oregon, Alison Rae Lee of Idaho, Lindsey Kay McLemore of Valliant, Chelsey Ann McLemore, also of Valliant; two great grandchildren, Lane Joseph Lee and Alvin Oliver Lee, both of Idaho; numerous nieces and nephews including Carolyn, Al "Bud", Elizabeth, Hugh, Wayne, Terry, and Lisa. Uncle Riley, as he was known by not only his nieces & nephews, is also survived by Marie McLemore, combination Mother, sister-in-law, friend. He also had a very special relationship with Charles, more brother than nephew. Riley felt an extra closeness with Alan, who shared many parts of his life. Services for Mr. McLemore were held Monday, August 31, 1998 at 10:00 a.m. in Ft. Towson Corinth Baptist Church. Reverend Bob Thornburgh, assisted by Reverend Bennie Hammons officiated. Interment was in Ft. Towson Cemetery, under the direction of Miller & Miller Funeral Home of Hugo.
Mark Freeman shows that Robert was born ca 1801 and died ca 1821.
There is, however, a "Robert McLemore" who was born ca 1810 in Tennesse, and who can be found in Carroll County, Mississippi at the time of the 1870 census. He is living in the same proximity of John Dabney McLemore, the younger half-brother to this Robert McLemore. Therefore, it is POSSIBLE that they are one in the same.

Rosa McLemore Dunkerly recalls that Bob was a "cowboy in his younger days, rode the Chisolm trail--knew all old timers, Ben Thompson, King Fisher and others. Was very good with a gun, wore two. Returned to McDade and killed Tom Bishop and all the members of the gang that were to be found."
Melba Gene McLemore notes, however, that Tom Bishop actually outlived Bob McLemore. She states that there were news articles about several attempts made on Bishop's life over the years. None of the news accounts, however, gave any indication that Bob might have been involved in these attempts. In Bob's family, a sketchy story was also passed down through the years, indicating that "Robert and two other family members from East Texas rode to Round Rock, Tx to get revenge for the hangings."
Both the 1900 census and daughter Margie Bell's delayed birth certificate list his occupation as a Physician. His grandson, Sam McLemore, Jr. clarifies that Bob was actually a "medicine man, healer, Indian Doctor." The 1910 Arkansas census, in fact, lists the family as "Indian." The prior Texas census showed them as white.
Pleasant McLemore wrote that "Bro. Bob and I were opposit characters. I was more like Felix, Bob didn't place much imphisis on justice, but Felix and I did. I roasted Bob many times while visiting him in regard to this. He brought Mollie [his wife] to be with mother before her twins were born, when she went back, I went with her to assist her, I was 16 years of age, I stayed there 5 or 6 months." (From a March 1, 1955 letter to his niece).
Bob McLemore's life was cut short by violence. When his youngest son, Sam McLemore, had not yet reached his tenth birthday he was in the fields with his father and a hired hand. Rosa reports that "the friend corrected Bob's boy Sam in a very rough manner." Bob and the hired hand shot at each other. Bob was shot in the jaw, but didn't visit a doctor. He developed gangrene from the wound and soon died. Bob was around 54 at the time, and left behind his wife and six children. Pleasant McLemore later wrote to a niece that is was a few miles from Vivian, Louisiana where his brother Bob was buried, in a "saw mill town named Mytis, Louisiana." He presumably is refering to Myrtis, a small town in Caddo Parish, near Vivian.

He was a member and Deacon of Covenant Presbyterian Church, and was a member of Springfield Country Club, University Club and GODA Club. MaryLynn Santa lists him with a much earlier date of death, June 1849. However, he appears to have still been living with his mother, listed as Andrew?, at the time of the 1850 US Census (Andrew McLemore, 27, M Farmer, Tennessee)
Betty Pritchett notes that:
ccording to 1860 census records, Robert Anderson McLemore had real estate valued at $20,000 and a personal wealth of $14,000. By 1870, His real estate was valued at $8,000 and his personal wealth was $800.
If a person's wealth was $25,000 in 1860, it would equal $1.9 million in 2008 currency. As a general rule to convert antebellum money into 2008 currency, multiply by 75. (This multiplier was derived at by comparing a skilled laborer's wages of roughly $500 in the 1840s to an average family income in 2008 of around $37,500.) In 1850, a single field hand was worth $1100 to $1800. This amount converts roughly to $75,000 to $135,000 in 2008 currency.
Copy of the will recorded in Maury County, Tennessee. I, R. A. McLemore, now a citizen of Maury Co. Tenn. Make will . . . . I request that my just debts be paid out of the first monies that come into the hands of my executors. I owe $130.00 to dau. Sallie R. McLemore, and $200 to dau. Dora Kesterton. I desire these to be paid. To by beloved wife Rebecca - the rents of my farm in Williamson County for the present year 1891. I request that my funeral expenses be first paid out of said rent money. To daus. Sallie R. McLemore, Dora Kesterton, wife of John T. Kesterton, Narcissus Cornelius, wife of George Cornelius, the sum of $50 each and to my son Jeff McLemore $5. All the residue of property to my son Claiborne Kinnard McLemore, which consists of my Williamson farm, which was purchased with the means of his mother, my second wife. Mar. 17, 1903
Claiborne Kinnard McLemore rec'd from his father's will an additional $346. He chose to pay the monies owed to his sisters himself rather than rely on the estate. He wanted to avoid the need to sell the properties he inherited.
I wrote this so my children and grandchildren would have a clue about their background. My father told many stories about his ancestors. He said that R.A. McLemore had a red beard and you could hear him calling hogs over a wide area. My grandfather became a professional gambler on the riverboats up and down the Mississippi. He married twice. When he made enough money gambling, he retired and married. Patti deGraffenreid who bore him one child. She died about a month after giving birth. I have the dates somewhere. After a while he married my grandmother Nellie Theresda Green. She had four children; only one lived to adulthood (my father).

Not Located
There is a Robert and Bessie McLemore family living in the City of Dallas, JP #1, at the time of the 1930 census enumeration, however this appears to be another family entirely. This conclusion was drawn due to (1) the 11 year difference in ages between the two Robert McLemore's (2) the fact the Dallas couple's son is named Robert W. McLemore, Jr. and not Robert H. McLemore, Jr. and (3) the fact that this couple appears to have been living in Palo Pinto County ten years earlier, whereas the other Robert McLemore was married and living in Fort Worth. Bessie McLemore of Dallas may have had the maiden name of CLARK, as a 15 year old Jessie Clark was living with them in 1920.
