(Research):Betty Blane Sutton speculates he is the father of her ancestor, George Robert McLemore. She emailed, in February 2012, that George Robert Mclemore was born in 1882 in the South, sometime before 1920 he married Thula (Allie) Willis in OK. They had two children: my mother, Violet Modene Mclemore (April 8 1920 -May 20 1978) and Paul Levithan Mclemore (Sept 17 1924 - Apr 1974) both born in OK. After Thula (1892-1927) died he took the two chldren to Texas where they ended up in a children's home. George returned to OK. In 1946 George ended up in Western State Hospital for 11 years and is buried on there grounds. I have found him in the 1910 and 1920 census, but nothing else.
John retired from the Air Force after 20 years of service. He later moved to Austin, and was employed by the State of Texas.
Major John McLemore, USAF, Retired, passed peacefully in his Austin home Saturday, August 1, 2015 at the age of 84 years. Major McLemore was born February 8, 1931 in Wise, Virginia.

When he registered for the World War I Draft, he was Farming for his father. O. A. McLemore, in Hazelhurst, Miss. He was of medium heighth and build, with brown eyes and hair.
Cynthia Rudzis emailed, in May 2012, that Mamie Odessa McLemore married Richard Osborn McCarrell. The Texas Death certificate of her eldest child, Velma McCarrell Lakey, indicates she was born in Jackson County, Alabama.
She married second Henry MARKS, according to "The Heritage of Lauderdale County, Alabama (p. 346)."
The website titled "COUCH WHITAKER FAMILY of CHESTER CO., PA" has a Margaret McLemore of this age, born in Lincoln County, Tennessee, marrying Tilford PEGRAM, with them being the parents of some 13 children. It must have been a different Margaret McLemore.
Sherilyne "Sam" Palmer, who descends from a collateral line, writes that Margaret McLemore Henderson, dau of Joel McLemore and Rachel Stinson married second Francis Smith, a brother of Samuel Henry Smith the husband of Mary Elizabeth McLemore; (Margaret being a first cousin to Mary Elizabeth McLemore (dtr of John McLemore and Caroline Stevenson)); Francis was her 2nd marriage); Margaret was widow in 1880 census with 3 children listed, Josephus 8, Margaret 6, and Beauchamp 3. Francis and Margaret were in 1870 Census, Logan Co, KY under Household of John W. Lamb and wife Mary. Lambs were neighbors to Obediah Smith (Frank's father). I believe that if Goodwin McLemore's wife was Mary Lamb -- her relatives were the neighbors to the Smith's and were the ones who took Hiram McLemore as a boarder when his parents, John and Caroline, died. An A. J. Lamb was witness to marriage of Francis Smith and Margaret McLemore Henderson.
(Research):She married first John Calvin HENDERSON on 17 Apr 1850 in Sumner County, Tennessee. They were the parents of William, Dorinda and Joel. She married second Francis M. SMITH, on 18 Dec 1865 in Logan County, Kentucky. They were the parents of Rebecca, Hiram, Josephus, Margaret and Beauchamp. (From "The Families of Jeff and Debbie Woolard" tree at RootsWeb's WorldConnect).
At the time of the 1940 census, she was listed as widowed, and the head of household. Living with her were her daughter, son--in-law, and three grandsons. She died in 1941 in Memphis, Tennessee, at the Campbell Clinic. She had had an operation for a fractured left hip, but died of a coronary occlusion. She was shown as a resident of Greenwood, Mississippi. Informant was R J MOOR of Greenwood, Mississippi.
Her great-granddaughter indicates she was known by the nicknames of both "Maggie" and "Money."

JOHNSTON'S HOME-GROWN HISTORIAN STILL GOING AT 94
SMITHFIELD - Barbours, Woodalls and Creeches beware. If your kin hail from Johnston County - or even passed through in the last few centuries - Margaret Lee knows a thing or two about them. Lee is a walking storehouse of county history. For nearly 40 years, she has clipped newspapers and collected letters; wills and other family memorabilia that form the backbone of the genealogy collection at the Johnston County Heritage Center. Most counties have some kind of local history center; often tucked in the comer of a public library. But thanks largely to Lee, the Johnston Heritage Center boasts thousands of books, photos, microfilm and artifacts, all housed in a three-story building converted from a bank. At 94, Lee still spends about five hours a day, six days a week, at the center, helping people research their ancestry and clipping tidbits from old newspapers and other sources for her voluminous files. "She'd come Sunday if we were open," says the center's director, Wingate Lassiter. Lee says her fascination with history started when she was a child who kept a close eye on her neighbors in the Cleveland area of Johnston County. Her father was a country doctor. "My parents scolded me for being nosy," Lee says. "I think too much curiosity has paid off." Earlier this year, Lee was honored as one of 25 "Living Legends of Johnston County" for her contributions to preserving local history. Her knowledge of local families is also legendary. "She can tell you not only who they are and where they live, but when they came here and where they come from," says Grover Miller, a fellow volunteer at the center. Her blue eyes look for familiar features as soon as she meets someone new, and her first words are always the same: "What's your name?" She smiles knowingly as a red- haired young lady scours a pile of census records for information on her family, the Woodalls. Many county residents, including a county commissioner and the former health director, share the name. "She has the hair of a Woodall," Lee says. Cookie Pope, chairwoman of the Johnston County commissioners, got a lesson on her family history from Lee; to whom she is distantly related. Lee gave her a newspaper clipping recounting a moonshine still being found on the property of Pope's great-grandfather.
A doctor's daughter
Lee grew up in the Cleveland community, where her father, George Ammie Mclemore, traveled dirt roads treating patients, first in a horse and buggy and later by car. She planned to study at Women's College in Greensboro (now UNC-Greensboro) to become a teacher, but attended classes for only one year. She first postponed college because she had surgery for scoliosis. When her mother, Nellie Johnson McLemore, died in 1934, the 24-year-old Lee took charge of her two brothers and two sisters, the youngest of whom was 8 at the time. That ended her hopes for finishing college. She married in 1941 and had three children. Her husband, Denton Lee, owned a store In Smithfield where he sold and repaired electronics and appliances. He died of a heart attack in 1965. Daughter Mary Nell Ferguson says Lee has collected newspaper clippings and records of special occasions as long as she can remember, whether they were news articles about neighbors or her children's report cards. "Anything that had anything to do with anyone she knew or loved, the clipping would be kept," Ferguson says. "She definitely had an interest in keeping history." Lee had never worked outside the home until 1967, when a librarian offered her $100 to organize newspapers in a room of the county library. She started by clipping articles of interest and filing them by subject. At the same time, she started collecting other bits and pieces, such as copies of the inside covers of family Bibles bearing the handwritten names of generations of owners. When she had enough information, she would collect donations to bind the material in books. For 10 years, she earned minimum wage working at the library part time. Then she retired and continued as a volunteer. Her collection kept growin "She just clipped and gathered until it got so big they no longer, had room in the library," says Miller, the volunteer.
History gets a home
As the holdings outgrew two library reading rooms, Lee cast her eye on the building across Third Street. When First Citizens Bank vacated the space, she worked with the bank's president and the county commissioners to move the collection there. The center opened in the former bank in 2000. Today, its holdings include hundreds of books like the ones Lee originated. Among them are census records, rolls of Civil War soldiers and lists of county cemeteries, roads and churches. Rotating exhibits greet visitors on the first floor - currently a selection of pottery made in Smithfield in the 1930s. The elevator, in the former bank vault, takes visitors to the third- floor collection that Lee began. Nearly any history book that touches on Johnston can be found on its shelves, and the genealogical information spans Eastern North Carolina and reaches into southern Virginia. Annual "road shows" reap documents and stories from the county's past, and the center solicits artifacts from Johnston families. Visitors come from across the country to research their ancestry. Lee now holds the title of curator emeritus. She takes a cab to the center every day from her home a few miles away. Poor hearing makes it more difficult for her to help researchers, but she still steps in when needed, and she still adds to her files. On a recent morning, her desk was covered with articles from the 1940s on roads being paved. Ferguson says her mother knows she has done a lot to document county history but doesn't dwell on the extent of her contributions. "When she looks around," Ferguson says, "it doesn't occur to her the magnitude of what she's done."

Obituary
MARGARET MCLEMORE LEE ..
Smithfield (NC) Margaret McLemore Lee - 96-year-old curator emeritus of the Johnston County Heritage Center - died early Monday (12 Feb 2007) at Johnston Memorial Hospital.
In 1967 she went to work part-time at the brand-new Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield where she began collecting local history and genealogy in what became known as the Johnston County Room. In 2000, the widely acclaimed collection moved into a separate home of its own across the street: today's Johnston County Heritage Center.
Although Mrs. Lee officially retired as a library employee in 1991, she continued her service as a daily volunteer in the Johnston County Room and later at the Heritage Center until a few days before her death.
She was born Sept. 26, 1910 in Johnston County's Cleveland Township as Margaret Elizabeth McLemore, daughter of Dr. George A. McLemore and Nellie Emily Johnson McLemore. Her father was a country doctor who moved the family to Smithfield in 1923. Margaret graduated from Smithfield High
School in 1927 and attended North Carolina College for Women (today's UNC-Greensboro). She married Denton F. Lee in 1941 and worked as bookkeeper for her husband's radio I and appliance business in Downtown Smithfield until his death in 1965.
Mrs. Lee joined Oakland Presbyterian Church in Cleveland Township in 1922 and in 1925 moved her membership to Smithfield's First Presbyterian Church where she served as treasurer of the Sunday School from 1947 till 1982, as the church's first woman ordained deacon, and as president of the Women of the Church. She also served as historian for the Women of the Church of Granville Presbytery as well as Women of the Church of the Synod of North Carolina.
During her term as president of the Smithfield Woman's Club in 1963-64, she won national recognition from the General Federation of Women's Clubs and the Sears- Roebuck Foundation for the club's Community Improvement Program.
She was the first president, in 1965, of the Historic Hastings House Association, which saved Smithfield's oldest surviving residence.
She was organizing regent for the Smith-Bryan Chapter of N.C. Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). She was also a charter member of the Johnston County Historical Society.
She was a charter member of the Johnston Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and served as a volunteer with Contact Teleministry from 1972 until 1987.
She was a member of the first Girl Scout troop organized in Johnston County, in 1923. In 1983 Mrs. Lee was named a "Distinguished Citizen" by the Smithfield-Selma Area Chamber of Commerce.
In 1996 she served as the first Grand Marshal for Cleveland Township's Fourth of July celebration.
In 2000 she was inducted into the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the highest civilian award bestowed by the State of North Carolina.
In 2005 she was honored by the Johnston County Heritage Commission as a "Living Legend of Johnston County." That same year she was named "Tar Heel of the Week" by The News & Observer of Raleigh.
Mrs. Lee was preceded in death by a brother, Dr. George A. McLemore of New York City, and a sister, Lucile McLemore Austin of Smithfield, as well as her husband.
She is survived by daughters, Mary Nell Lee Ferguson and husband, Jerry of Cleveland Township, Margaret Ann Lee Stubbs and husband, David of Smithfield; son, Denton F. Lee, Jr. and wife, Jane of Cleveland Township; a brother and sister - Dr. Robert A. McLemore of Springfield, Ohio and Eloise McLemore Grady of Smithfield; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church on South Third Street in Smithfield.
A graveside service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Oakland Presbyterian Church on Cleveland Road, followed by a memorial service at
11 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian in Smithfield.
The family requests that memorial donations be made to either of the following: the Johnston County Heritage Center, P.O. Box 2709, Smithfield, NC, 27577; First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 1159,
Smithfield, NC 27577; the Margaret McLemore Lee Endowment, Johnston Community College Foundation, P.O. Box 2350, Smithfield, NC 27577.

Mark Freeman has her date of birth as 1848, but this contradicts both the 1850 and 1860 census. George Rogers, a descendant, emailed in September 2013 that Margaret Jane "had children from her only known marriage. One son George Edward Rogers and daughter Francis or Fannie. She was married then separated from her only known husband a George W.(Washington) Rogers. When they separated Geroge took his son George Edward Rogers (my grandfather) and Margaret took her daughter Fannie. No idea where Margaret went. George W. Rogers lived in Lavania, Carroll County and remarried a Susan Elizabeth (maiden name Pritchard)Butler whom was married with previous children from her late husband Mr. Butler."

Married a BRIM. Assumed she is the mother of Margaret T. Brim, who lived with Wilson McLemore at the time of the 1850 Pike County, Alabama census. Also assumed it was she, not her daughter, who was left a bequest of $1 in the Will of Henry McLemore of Houston County, Georgia. It is possible her first name was something other than Margaret.

It is assumed that Mariah is the daughter of Abner McLemore, due to her proximity to Abner's sons on the 1860 through 1900 Calhoun County, Mississippi census, and the fact that a McLemore was living with her family in 1880. However the transcription of her marriage record shows her last name as Lemon, and further shows her as being born in South Carolina. Therefore more work should be done to proof or disprove this connection.
Another Mariah McLemore could instead be Abner's daughter. This second Mariah McLemore was born ca 1835 and married Charles Pinckney Campbell on 6 Oct 1861 in Lawerence County, Mississippi. The Mariah that married Charles Campbell is an ancestor of Lisa Coker Thigpen. (LisaHeb138@aol.com).

Mark Freeman has her DOB as after 1751 in Bute Co., N.C. She and John Nicholson were the parents of 11 children.
Lynda Huckaby Bishop emailed, in January 2009, that:
"I noticed your McLemore ancestry online. My grandmother (I don't know how many greats) was Frances Nicholson Williams. I believe she was the daughter of Atkins Nicholson, grandson of Atkins McLemore (?) and Betsy Knott. The only proof of that connection I can find is in the Maury County history book in TN. So much of that was incorrect. I was wondering if you have any Nicholson genealogy you would share.

Melba Gene McLemore shows that she married James R. BROWN.
Foide Williams, in a post to the McLemore Family Genealogy Forum, writes that: "The 1820 census of Lincoln Co, Tn (pg 14) shows Sterling C. McLemore and (pg 30) Signer Allen (who married Rebecca McLemore), Benjamin Wright (who married Hannah McLemore), James R. Brown (who married Martha McLemore), and Joel McLemore. These are all from Fayette Co, KY and apparently traveled together to Lincoln Co, TN."
Melba Gene McLemore thinks it POSSIBLE the census listing b
elow is that of Martha McLemore Brown. There are several significant differences that need to be resolved before assuming this with certainty. (Name of Spouse, place of birth, relationship of Martha to the older Augustine Clayborne of Virginia in the same home, etc)

At the time of the 1870 census, she was no longer listed in her parents home. She may have died, married, or *might* be the Martha McLemore that was listed as a housekeeper in the home of 72 year old Rachel Fowler. She would have been about 34 at the time, however, and Rachel's housekeeper was only listed as age 25.

Dave Britt wrote, on February 17, 2002, on the Maddox McLemore Descendants MSN group:
"Starting from where we're common, Joel McLemore and Rachel Stinson had a buncha kids, your Henry and my Martha C. McLemore. Martha married Michael B. Maben (11/12/1857) and had three children: Sarah A. b1861, Margaret Elizabeth (Lizzie) b. 8/22/1864 and Ulyssus b.1869.
Lizzie Maben married Sebran A. Britt (1/11/1884) and they had 9 children. The family lived in and around 'Bucksville' KY (aka 'Gasper' - Auburn, P.O. - Route #2). Anyway, child #8 was my Grandpa - he was born 'Hubert' but everyone called him Pete. Pete married Birtie Mae Powell (Mae) and they had a handful of children, all still living. The oldest of these is my Dad, Leon. There is another tie to the McLemore family from the Britt family, too. Sebran had a younger brother named George (Washington) Britt. He married the granddaughter of James McLemore (Martha's and Henry's brother), Frances Elizabeth (Aunt Betty) McLemore. Her dad was John J McLemore who was married a number of times I understand. Aunt Betty lived across the street from my Grandparents, and I knew her as a boy."
Cole Shoaf (blazerman1@email.msn.com) shows that she was born 10 July 1810 in Burke County, North Carolina, and died 8 May 1876 in Pickway County, Ohio. He further indicates that she and Harmonas Alkire were married on 31 Dec 1829 in Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois.

His Texas Death certificate listed his occupation as "Variety Store", and also showed he was a veteran of World War II. On his FindAGrave memorial page, created by Julie Karen Hancock, it is further shown that he was a "MSGT Ordinance Department." He shares a double marker with wife, Hortense. Her maiden name and dates were not yet engraved.
Listed by Mark Freeman, but not James L. McLemore. She is also omitted from the HISTORY OF CARROLL COUNTY, TENNESSEE, p. 257, in the transcription of her fathers will. Appears to have died prior to the death of her father?
This widow, Mary McLemore, was a South Carolinian, the daughter of James McLemore (died 1796), son of Joel MacLemore (1739/40-1795), the son of John Macklemore. She was thus probably Harrison's third cousin. She qualified on Harrison's intestate estate on July 22, 1822, with Richard Harrison and Alexander Peete as her sureties (Southampton Order Book 16, p. 19), filed her inventory and appraisal of his estate on October 21, 1822 (Southampton Order Book 16, p. 133), and won a law suit in her fiduciary capacity on the same date (October 20, 1823) as she bound out her son. (James L. McLemore, III, p 52).
Was said to have married first William COURTNEY on 25 Dec 1825, Lawrence County, Mississippi and then to a Mr. LEWIS sometime after 1830, also in Lawrence County.
Not sure if she was a daughter, or second wife, to Raiford. Not listed in the 1864 Division of Lands of Raiford McLemore, unless she was also called Susannah, or she may have died prior to 1864.
Is this the Mary McLEMORE that married Wm H. Plumlee on 6 Apr 1854 in Knox County, TN? Could he have been her cousin, William H. Plumlee, the son of Nancy McLemore and William Plumlee of Knox County?

General Petition Information
Abstract:Eighteen-year-old Polly McLemore Perkins and her husband, William O. Perkins, seek a partition of the slaves remaining in the estate of her late father, Robert McLemore. They inform the court that McLemore's will directed that his slaves be divided among his widow and his children, three of whom are still minors. The Perkinses cite that the slaves were "to be divided when your petitioner Polly M should arrive at the age of eighteen years and should marry." They also note that the widow's "interest in all of said slaves" has been set aside and that Polly is of age and married. Of the belief that they "are entitled under said will to five seventeenths of the value of said slaves," the petitioners pray the court to "order a division of said slaves ... to be made & appoint commissioners to divide the same & set apart to your petitioners five seventeenths of the value thereof."

In a letter dated 22 October, 1994, Elizabeth Gill wrote:
"My husband's grandmother was a McLemore. She had a brother, John T. born in 1846 in Texas. They lived in Timpson, Shelby Co. Her father was Adkin. This grandmother was widowed after the Civil War. I have a newspaper clipping stating that her husband, William H. DARNELL died in 1866. She had another child (of doubtful parentage) in 1873. Her obituary (1919) states explicitly that Mr. Darnell died in 1873. She later remarried a COOPER and died in Oklahoma."
Diana Noel shows this second spouse as John COOPER, born 1837 in Texas.
Daniel Creel posted the following message to the McLemore-L message boards:
Research of my son-in-law's lineage leads to Mary A. McLemore, 7-23-1843 Shelby Co., TX, to 5-22-1919 Weatherford, Custer Co., OK.
She is identified by records as a daughter of W. Adkin McLemore, c1806 GA to 2-16-1881 Shelby Co., TX, and Susan A. Brinson, c1817 GA to bef1870 Shelby Co., TX. She had 4 known siblings - Matthew William, James S., Elizabeth M. [???] and John T. McLemore.
Family oral tradition and photographs identify Native American lineage in Mary and any help would be appreciated with McLemore family history to identify this line.

Her Death Certificate shows her as Mrs. Mary Bell McLemore Pate, born in Moore County, NC. Her father's name was shown as "don't know" and mother as "Martha Black." She was a widow. Informant was Mr. Norwood Pate of West Columbia, S.C.
from "One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Mason City, Illinois 1857-1982", published by the Quasquicentennial Historical Committee, 1982.
Page 33: "Miss Miss Mamie McLemore was librarian in 1914 and 1915, when with the help of Miss Ruby Aubere, the Havana librarian, the books was reclassified and a regular library system employed."
She appears to have cared for her parents, and at the age of 54 was still single and living with her widowed father. She worked in sales and as a clerk at various stores, and as of the 1930 census was serving as a county probation officer in Mason County, Illinois.
