Lee and his wife lived on the old McLemore farm at Erin, Texas.
When Lee was on his death bed in St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Beaumont, his son Robert Lee went to see him. When Lee asked who he was, Robert Lee replied, "I'm your son, Robert Lee." Lee shook his head, "No your not. You're one of those Morgan boys." Whereupon Robert Lee asked, "Which one do you think I am?" to which Lee replied, "You're Julian." Houston Chronicle
Saturday, November 8, 2008
Houston's first City Councilman Emeritus, Lee McLemore, 93, passed away on the Nov. 6, 2008.
He was one of Houston's most dedicated and energetic citizens for civic and political service. Lee lived and worked by his creed: "There is a destiny that makes us brothers. No one goes his way alone. All we cast into the lives of others come back into our own."
Lee was born June 6, 1915, in the foothills of Hickman County, Tenn. When he was 3 years old his family moved to Nashville where he attended public school through to seventh-grade. His education was halted when his family moved to Kansas City, Mo., for his mother's health. Shortly thereafter, his mother died and it was necessary for him to seek employment. At the age of 15, having a knack for art and lettering, Lee became a commercial artist.
Three years later, while working for the theatres, he met Walt Disney, who admired his drawings of Mickey Mouse and other cartoons. Walt Disney offered him a position in his California Studio. With the letter of employment in his hand and his sign kit, he headed for California. It was the Feb. 17, 1936, and the ice and snow made the traveling unbearable.
It was in Dallas, Texas, where he searched for a warmer route to California. Someone suggested that he go south on Highway 75 to Houston, Texas. He had never heard of Houston, but took the advice. The next day was shinning bright and all the Houstonians he met were friendly. Out of funds, and quite taken with his welcoming town, Lee delayed his journey and quickly found a job. Houston had a new and energetic citizen.
In 1939 he established his own company. The Houston Kolor-Ad Co. was born, where Lee sold signs and displays. In 1941, as a private pilot, he was charter member of the Gulf Coast Flying Club. The Club later became a wing of the Houston Civil Air Patrol. In 1942 he entered the Army Air Force and served as a public relations photographer under Gen. Doolittle's command on Okinawa.
Returning to Houston in 1945, Lee started real estate development business and continued with his civic work. He became a member of the Houston Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1940 and served in many capacities, including director, secretary, and president. In 1950 he was voted "Houston's Outstanding Young Man" by the Houston Chamber of Commerce. In 1951 Texas Governor Allen Shivers named him one of "the Five Outstanding Young Texans."
The year 1952, brought a new challenge for Lee. A group of Houston businessmen urged him to run for Houston City Council. With their support, he was elected to District "C" with a large majority. He was re-elected as city councilman for 10 consecutive terms from 1952 to 1972.
During his 20 years of service as councilman to the City of Houston, Lee served as Mayor Pro-Tem, serving under four mayors: Oscar Holcome, Roy Hofheinz, Lewis Cutrer and Louie Welch. He was elected secretary and then president to the Houston-Galveston Area Council, serving 11 counties, and he chaired many committees including aviation (during his term the Bush Intercontinental Airport was built).
Early in his career as Mayor Pro-Tem McLemore flew to Kansas to invite Bernard Calkins to bring his air-condition business to Houston. He also spearheaded the effort through the State Capitol to create what is known as Lake Conroe, Lake Livingston, and the Wallaceville Reservoir. The City record will also show his ongoing support for the beautification of Buffalo Bayou. He was instrumental in naming Allen Parkway for the founders of our city. Lee was awarded a lifetime membership to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and was appointed Marshall for the Salt Grass trail ride for 11 consecutive years.
Lee also gave his time as either a member or officer for the United Fund, Lighthouse for the Blind, Youth Fair Rodeo, Harris County Historical Society, American Legion Post 560 for 49 years, Mayor and Councilman Association, 147th fighter group, Houston Advertising Council, Boy Scout Advisory Council, and Charter member of the Big Brothers and Sisters Organization. He was also a board member of the Houston Chamber of Commerce, was a charter member and served of the Board of Beltway State Bank, and Advisory Director of Allied Beltway Bank and First Interstate Bank.
Upon retiring in 1972, Mayor Louie Welch, and his city council members voted him "Houston's City Councilman Emeritus." In August 1999, 17 years after Lee retired, Mayor Kathy Whitmire and City Council voted a resolution commending Lee "on his dedication and commitments exhibited throughout his service to our community."
For the last 35 years, Lee and Billie have divided their time in Texas, between Sugar Land and their Raven Ridge Ranch near Huntsville, and in the later years their lakeside home in Bentwater. Lee purchased the Huntsville property in 1948 and spent most of his weekends, for 52 years clearing and developing it himself. It was his true pride and joy! Lee and Billie also spent summers and Christmas holidays at their home in Pagosa Springs, Colo. They also enjoyed their membership at the downtown First United Methodist Church, The Sugar Creek Country Club, the Pagosa Springs Country Club, and the Bentwater Country Club.
Lee was preceded in death by his father, mother, and brother.
He is survived by his wife, Billie; son, Wayne; granddaughter, Kelly Tolar and husband Todd; great-grandchildren, Kendall and Will Tolar; niece, Charlis McLemore and family, Lori, Traci and Chuck, Chuck's wife Amy and children, Liam and Cassidy; nephew, Jimmie and wife Annie and daughter Elaine.
A private graveside service will be conducted at Woodlawn Cemetery, 1101 Antoine in Houston.
The memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 10, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis and Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston. Immediately following services, a reception will be held in the pavilion of Geo. H. Lewis and Sons.
Serving as honorary pallbearers are Randy Cook, William Franklin M.D., James H. Foster, Don Martenson, Jeffrey Robinson, Col. William Storm, Jack Threet and Bill Williams.
For those desiring, memorial contributions in Lee's name may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Ginger Riegel states that Louanna was also called "Lucy" and "Louie." She also indicates that Louanna: "Received $28 from her father after he passed away, and that she was listed in Raiford's will as "The Wife of Daniel Carter." At the time of the 1860 census, Louanna was living with her husband Daniel Carter in the household immediately preceding that of Raiford McLemore.
Is she a daughter of Raiford, or Granddaughter? Note the eight year gap in age between she and Amos. She was listed on the 1850 census in the household of Raiford McLemore, but not in the 1864 Division of the Lands of Raiford McLemore. Therefore, it is likely that she was either deceased or not an heir of Raiford, unless she was also called Susanna.
At the time of the 1870 census, she was living with Rachel (McLemore) and Thomas Smith, and listed as "Keeping House."
At the time he registered for the draft during World War I, he was a resident of Baton Rouge, LA, working in the process department of Standard Oil of Baton Rouge. He listed his nearest relatives as Mrs. Laura BREWSTER and Mrs. Quilla McLemore, Sisters, of ???? and Bonita, Mississippi.

Some transcriptions of the Taylor Cemetery instead listed her date of birth as 1850, but that appears to be an error as she was age 4 on the 1860 census.
Lawrence Boyd writes that she married twice, to Carl CUNNINGHAM and later Oral BOSWELL. She and Oral Boswell had one child. Paul Williams confirms her marriage to Oral BOSWELL.
The Texas Death certificate of her son, Edward, shows his mother as Mary Cammack. However, as of the 1900 census Joe King, along with his second wife, were living in Shelby County with M. E. McLemore, mother-in-law. This appears to be Matilda Page McLemore, age 63, born in South Carolina. Matilda was the mother of Mary McLemore Cammack, but Mary did not appear to have a son named Edward Warren King. It is likely that he death certificate was incorrect, and that Edward was a daughter of Matilda's youngest daughter, Lourena, who apparently had died sometime between Edward's birth in 1891 and the 1900 census.
Per Nan McCoy Kittell, Lucy had a daughter before she married Hank Votes. Her brothers paid to send her to Houston, where the baby was born. She placed the baby for adoption. Later in life, she searched for her child, but was never able to locate the child. This was confirmed by Hank Votes in 1982. She and Hank were unable to have children together, and he believed that Lucy "died of a broken heart."
Melba Gene McLemore notes she was buried in the Poplar Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, in Calhoun County, Mississippi. The dates were not shown on her tombstone.
Married to William Joseph AUSTIN of Smithfield and the mother of George Willis, Margaret Lee, and William Joseph AUSTIN, Jr.
Shown as Lucille McLemore Austin on her North Carolina Death Certificate. Margaret LeMaster was the information. Underwood-Smithfield was the funeral home, and she was cremated by the Goldsboro Cremation Services.
At the time of the 1940 Federal Census, she and her husband, Cecil B. SMITH, age 26, are living with her parents in Fairfield, Alabama.
Her FindAGrave memorial page, created by Gene Hill, has her obituary as follows:
Funeral for Lucille M. Smith, 86, of Decatur will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home with the Rev. R.A. Reinhardt officiating.
Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour before services.
Mrs. Smith died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at Summerford Nursing Home in Falkville. She was born April 22, 1916, in Moulton to Walter McLemore and Della McCulloch McLemore. She owned and operated Patterson's Men's Store in Decatur Shopping Center. She was a member of Beltline Church of Christ. She was the widow of Cecil B. Smith and the sister of the late J.T. McLemore and the late Price McLemore.
Survivors include one daughter, Elesia Reinhardt of Decatur; four sisters, Myrtle Dutton and Katie White, both of Falkville, Audrey Rogers of Decatur and Dorothy Parvin of Detroit; and two grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Scott Reinhardt, Doug Rogers, Ray Dearman, Jack Moody, Phillip Watkins and Duane Smith.

Sometimes her date of birth is shown as in 1833, as is the death certificate below. It is more likely to be 1838 per her age on various census enumerations and as Rosa McLemore Dunkerly shows that Wright, born in 1835, was the eldest child of Keton McLemore and Rebecca Harrelson.
Lucretia was married first to George Stedham, who died in 1876, and shortly after his death, she married Joseph Albert OEMISCH
However, she was still listed as Lucretia STEDHAM on subsequent census enumerations. Lucretia's sister, Rosa McLemore Dunkerly, said that Lucretia's "2nd husband Joe Eomish---went away, never heard of, 1 child Paul"
Rosa also notes that Lucretia had six children, two of whom died in infancy.
Norma Smith provided El Paso City Directory lisitngs from 1914-1920, and Lucretia J Stedman, the widow of Geo B, is shown as a nurse and living at 507 Tornillo.

Jim White (jim4@whitesnet.net) emailed that Lucy m: Joel BULLOCK & died before 1800 Isle of Wight County Virginia. Eldon and Ann McLemore of Derby, Kansas, also indicate she married a BULLOCK.
Never married. She was said to have been thrown from a horse as a girl and permanently crippled. In her father's obituary, she is listed as of Statesboro, Georgia.
(Research):Lucy's father died without a will shortly after she was born. Apparently David M. MASON was initially appointed the child's legal guardian, as he filed an accounting for his tenure as such from 1828 to the mid 1830's (Greensville Will Book 5, p. 474); he had been security on Claiborne and Sarah's marriage bond. Then Clifton HARRISON (apparently Lucy's uncle) became her guardian for a brief time before his own death in the mid to late 1837; Harrison's estate was committed to the hands of the sheriff for administration, and the sheriff was order to "render before Master COBB and account of said Clifton's guardianship of Lucy Ann McLEMORE"; this order was entered November 30, 1837 (Southampton Order Book 18, p. 345). Finally Francis Y. JONES, husband of Lucy's aunt Julia, was appointed on April 4, 1842 (Greenville Will Book 6, p. 139), showing payment of the remaining funds on hand to Willam M. EVERETT to whom Lucy was married pursuant to a marriage bond issued January 17, 1842 (with JONES as security on their bond-Southampton Marriage Register, pp. 515,725). (James L. McLemore, III, pp. 67, 68).
A resident of Baton Rouge and former resident of Vidor, TX she died in Baton Rouge at 6 pm on Sunday, December 16, 2012. She was 85 and a native of Stephenson, MS and a retired Coburn Supply data processing clerk. Visitation at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd, on Wednesday, Dec. 19th, from 10 am until religious services at 1 pm Rev. Preston Thompson. Graveside services will be held at Restlawn Memorial Park in Vidor, TX at 11 am on Thursday, Dec. 20th. She is survived by two sisters, Mildred Terry and Elizabeth Cox and husband Otis; brother, David McLemore and wife Nancy; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members. Ernestine was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Leigh Francis; parents, Richard Leon McLemore and Hattie Corban McLemore; and a brother, Richard Leon McLemore, Jr. She was a member of Redeemer Baptist Church. After their marriage they were said to have traveled by convered wagon to Texas to live near relatives there for about a year. Luther had great looking crops coming in just fine when a windstorm developed. After the storm was over everything in the field was browned like Autumn and all was lost. They decided right then that farming was much better back home in Monroe county, so they boarded a train and made the long trip home, never to leave again. It was while in Texas that Luther learned about cotton farming, knowledget that he brought back with him to Tennessee. He became the first cotton farmer in Monroe County, but neighbors soon followed suit.
At the time of the 1920 census, he was lviing in Crockett County, Texas, as a roomer in the home of Sam and Alice Smith. He was listed as age 29, single, and a leather worked at a saddle shop.
His Texas Death Certificate shows he was single, and a Saddler in the Saddle Business. He was shown as age 56, with the notation that his exact date of birth, and the name of his parents had been "unable to obtain." Informant was J. M. Dudley of Ozona, Texas. He was buried in Sulphur Springs.
Not living in the home of his father and stepmother at the time of either the 1900 or 1910 census. Dolores McLemore McKee says that he was raised by a Smith family after his mother died when he was still an infant.

"Other, less definitive evidence tends to indicated that John's other daughter, Lydia, married Robert MAGEE, who was subsequently appointed a guardian for a McLemore orphan (a daughter of Gilliam McLemore). (James L. McLemore, III, p. 58). Eldon and Ann McLemore of Derby, Kansas, also show her as marrying a MAGEE.
Jim White (jim4@whitesnet.net) indicates, that Lydia m: Robert LEWIS & died before 1820 Lincoln County North Carolina. Eldon and Ann McLemore of Derby, Kansas, also show that she married a LEWIS.
"He was raised around Rogersville, Ala. During the Confederate draft, he and others were held at a particular farm. All the prisoner "draftees" carried fodder from the barn to sleep on. Going upstairs, so the story goes, Mac threw his fodder down on the guard and headed for the Coldwater area. This is how the McLemores were supposedly established in Lincoln County. Mac was blind in later years and terrified of storms. Thunder would send him to hide in the basement." From the ANCESTORS OF STUART DAVID CHILDRESS

"One day [John McLemore]...was with his Uncle Maclin Bass McLemore in Rogersville. Maclin was a pilot on the Shoals. The Shoals, being a treacherous body of water and rapids, took a skilled person to navigate. That fateful day John and Maclin were captured by the army. Thinking John was too young (he was 15); he was told to go home and tell his aunt what had happened to her husband. Legend has it that Maclin was never heard from again." (The Heritage of Lauderdale County, Alabama, p. 347).
He built a dogtrot house with one side log and the other frame, surrounded by large trees and log dependencies in an ideal rural setting. When Maclin McLemore returned from the ardous task of piloting boats over the treacherouse Tennessee River Shoals, he liked to prop his feet up in comfort. He found that comfortable place in the story-and-a-half dogtrot house which he built around the time of his marriage in 1843. (The Lure and Lore of Limestone County, p. 147)

It is noted that Nancy and her children were ALSO enumerated on the Lauderdale County census dated 18 July 1870. Perhaps they lived on/near the border and were counted twice? Or lived part time in both locations? For whatever reason, here is the second listing. Note the slight difference in the children's ages, PLUS an additional child (Ulisses, female?, age 4) being shown:

Killed in a stage accident. Nashville, Tenn., Dec. 28. --- Miss Maggie McLemore, a teacher in the Gordonsville Academy, was fatally injured today by the capsizing fo the Carthage stage. The horses ran away. Prof. Williams was seriously hurt.
She was a teacher in the Hemphill Independent School District.
