James L. McLemore, the author, and Mark Freeman both show that Amos was a son of Moses McLemore and grandson of Wright McLemore. However, another researcher, Jim White, does not think Amos descended from the Wright McLemore family. In January, 2009, he posted to Mark Freeman's McLemore online tree:
"Check the 1820 Giles County Tennessee Census and explain who Burwell and John McLemore are on that census..... Someone missed a necessary fact somewhere...Amos and his family did not descend of any Wright McLemore."
Some researchers also show them as the parents of Lavina, Matthew and Louisa.
Larry Kingsley is one such researcher. He shows that Lavina married John J. JOHNSTON, and that they had a large family.
According to the Probate Record for the Estate opf Thomas A. FONTAINE, State of Mississippi, Clarke County, on June 1, 1846, it was "Ordred by the Court that Amos McLemore, William Covington and John Atkinson be appointed appraisers of all and singular the goods, chattels and personal estate of Thomas A. Fontaine, dec'd."

Based on the 1860 census, Amos appears to have been born ca. 1813.
Amos was said to be the son of Raiford McLemore by researcher Robert McLemore Butler. However, based on the 1820 and 1830 Sampson County, NC census enumeration, Raiford did not appear to have any sons that were this age. Additionally, Raiford McLemore appears to have also been the father or otherwise closely associated with an Amos McLemore who was born ca 1845. Finally, in the Division of the lands of Raiford McLemore, done ca 1864, Amos was not mentioned.
Due to all of these factors, it seems unlikely to me that Amos was a son of Raiford McLemore. It would therefore seem likely a that he was actually the son of one of Raiford's three older brothers, Hezekiah, Henry or Tobias.
Very little is known about the makeup of HEZEKIAH's family. It appears that Hezekiah may have died sometime after 1813 when his last land transaction in Sampson County is recorded. It is possible, however, that he left surviving children in or around Sampson County. It is also possible that he moved away from North Carolina, presumably taking his family with him. James L. McLemore, III thinks it a strong possibility that Hezekiah moved to South Carolina, where he died ca. 1818. Based on naming patterns, however, it seems Hezekiah was more likely the father of Raiford McLemore, born ca 1815 than of Amos, born ca 1813. It is possible, however, that he was the father of Amos.
HENRY had a son that was born between 1810 and 1820, and therefore he could be the father of Amos McLemore. Henry's family was in Bladen County, which was adjacent to Sampson County, at the time of the 1820 and 1830 census. Additionally, in 1870, a deed shows that Amos & Jemima McLemore sold property in Sampson County that was described as "Beginning at a stake on the old Pond two pines as pointers below his old house, whence with Henry McLEMORE's line...." That Amos's land adjoined land once owned by Henry adds weight to this possibility. However, James L. McLemore, III has ruled out Henry due to a Will filed by Henry in Georgia, and Amos is NOT included in his list of children by either of his two wives. Henry's sons born between 1910 and 1915 appear to have been John Wright McLemore and Wilson McLemore, and therefore Henry could not have been the father of Amos.
Finally, TOBIAS McLemore, was also listed as having a son born between 1810 and 1815. By process of elimination, Tobias seems to be the most likely fit as being the father of Amos, unless of course Amos was the son of Hezekiah and Raiford, also born ca 1810-1815, was the son of Tobias.
Based on all of the above, it is assumed that Amos is the son of Tobias, and Raiford the son of Hezekiah. Further proof should be sought out to support both assumptions.

Henry Lee writes that the Leaf River Baptist Minutes show that Amos McLemore was baptised on June 20, 1830. Minutes show he became a leader in the church, a close affiliated of the Providence Baptist Church now in Forrest County, Mississippi.
The following Biographical information was excerpted from Everett Roy Hammond's complilation titled MAJOR AMOS McLEMORE, Published by the Jones Co. Genealogical & Historical Organization, Laurel, MS, 2002.
"Amos moved with his family to Perry County, Mississippi [around 1836] when they settled on the old homeplace out from Estabuchie. At the time of his marriage to his cousin, Rosa Lavinia McLemore, Amos was a Methodist-Episcopal minister in the Leaf River Circuit encompassing Jones and Perry counties. He was also working as a school teach in Ellisville where he and Rosa lived. How long Major McLemore worked as a teacher and minister is not known. The 1860 census gives his occupation as "merchant." He was engaged in the merchantile business with Dr. John McCormick Bayliss near the old Bayliss home, on the west side of the Leaf River and west of Eastabutchie, MS. John Bayliss was a son of wealthy slaveholder and Methodist minister, George Bayliss. This is the same John Bayliss who was a secessionist candidate in the Jones County election held Dec. 20, 1861. His opponent was John H. Powell, Jr. a Unionist candidate. It is known that Amos was involved in land speculation during this period and had increased both his wealth and status. Thus at the beginning of the War Between the States, Amos and Rosa were quite prosperous. They owned at least 700 acres of land and a half interest in the mercantile business. However, like the majority of most Southerners, Amos's wife apparently lost almost everything during the War except the land, site of the old homeplace, which Amos's mother, Anna Maria, had inherited from her husband John when he died in 1854.
Confederate law provided for receipt of organized units as well as individual recruits into military service. Amos McLemore wrote the Confederate States President, Jefferson Davis, requesting permission to raise a company on May 27, 1861. Permission was granted, and on August 10, 1861, the company raised by McLemore was enlisted in Ellisville, Jones County, Mississippi. McLemore called his company the Rosinheels (sometimes written as Rosin Heels) and that is the name that appears on the first muster roll of the company. It was eventually replaced by the official designation, Company B, 27th Mississippi Infantry Regiment. The original 99 officers and men were drawn primarily from Jones and Perry counties. They marched from Ellisville to Marion Station, Lauderdale County where they were mustered into service on September 10, 1861 and Amos was commissioned as Captain.
The Rosinheels were first sent to Pensacola, Florida and assigned to the defense of Fort McRee. In 1862, they were sent by train to Chattanooga, Tennessee. Some six weeks after their arrival they, along with the rest of Bragg's command, embarked to Perryville, Kentucky and on Oct. 8, 1862 some 16,000 Confederate troops engaged and defeated a Yankee army of 60,000 men. The battle of Perryville is remember for its intensity and fury and lasted only about six hours. At the end of the day, some 7,5000 men on both sides were dead, wounded or missing. Half of the Rosinheels were either killed or wounded, with Capt. McLemore himself seriously wounded. In late December, barely recovered from their last battle, the 27th Mississippi Regiment was ordered to form a line of battle before Murfreesboro, flanking to the right of Walthall's Brigade in an open field swept both by freezing rain and intense Union artillery and rifle fire. Virtually two-thirds of the Confederate's effective foreces were destroyed on a piece of ground less than an acre in size. In spite of this, they swept the Union troops back 1200 yards, caputuring six artillery pieces and an entire company of Union Sharpshooters. Many men were sent to the rear suffering form exhaustion and exposure, but Capt. McLemore remained in command of the Rosin Heels throughout the engagement. After the battle, their duty consisted mainly of working on fortification and patrolling roads facing the enemy. On March 26, 1863, Amos McLemore was promoted to the rank of Major and third in command of the 27th Regiment. In July, 1863, his regiment, along with the rest of Walthall's Brigade, was sent to Atlanta to protect the supply depots and ordinance shops there from the Union Army.
Maj. Amos McLemore's temporary and final assignment for the confederacy was not on the battlefield. Gettysburg and Vicksburg had been lost with an appalling number of casualities. The Confederate forces were in desparate need of men to replace those they had already lost. In mid-August, 1863, McLemore was sent by General Bragg to return to the area in which his original regiment had been raised in order to both encourage new enlistment and to return stragglers to the ranks of their regiment. He was to persuade if possible, and compel if necessary, the return to service of the large number of deserters and stragglers in the area. With the help of an Amnesty offer from General Bragg, Major McLemore had had considerable success, and was known to have returned some 119 soldiers to battlefield. However, on October 5, 1863 his mission and his life was cut short by fatal shots reported to be fired by Newt Knight. Maj. McLemore died in the home of State Representative Amos Deason's home in Ellisville, Mississippi, surrounded by his officers and good friends. Newt Knight was said to have have confessed his complicity in the crime to his son, Thomas Jefferson Knight. In a much later interview with Meigs Frost, he stated that "We stayed out in the woods minding our own business until the Confederate Army began sending raiders after us like bloodhounds...then we saw we had to fight." No individual, however, was ever charged with McLemore's murder, and no one was prosecuted, no official justice ever rendered. Newt Knight died as an old man of ninety-two years of age in 1922.
His Tombstone reads: "Major Amos McLemore, 27th Regt. Miss. Volunteers, C.S.A. Born Aug. 23, 1823, Assassinated while in the discharge of his duties as a Soldier, Sept 14, 1863. He was a bright Mason, a devoted Confederate Soldier, and a M.E. Minister." An inscription on the base of the marker reads "By Leaf River Lodge No. 19, A.F. and A. Mason."
A government issue flat confederate marker is also located at the foot of his grave. The date of death on the tombstone contradicts the one found in his official military records, and is therefore assumed to be incorrect. The date of birth also is about four years earlier than census records would indicate. It appears he may have actually been born in August 1827.

Rev. William P. McLemore, in a section on his website devoted to Notable McLemore's (Website: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Meadows/3476/mclem1.htm), has the following biography:
Amos McLemore was a planter of Lauderdale County, Mississippi, born in Chickasaw County, December 3, 1829. His parents, William and Martha (Joiners) McLemore, were born in North Carolina and Tennessee in 1800, respectively, moved to Covington County when he was but a child, and in 1838 they moved to Lauderdale County and settled near where Meridian is now situated. Amos was married in 1855 to Miss Mary Jane McShan, of Lauderdale County, by whom he had nine children: William, Andrew, Virginia, Fannie, Acquila, Laura, Kirkland, and a son who lived only a month. At the opening of the Civil War, Mr. McLemore enlisted in the Confederate Army and upon the return of peace, he turned his attention to planting, notwithstanding the fact that, during the war, his plantation had been rifled of all valuables, and had grown up to weeds. He turned his attention to the culture of cotton, in which he was quite successful and made money. He owned one thousand acres of land, three miles northeast of Meridian, MS. He was considered a self-made man, well posted on general topics of the day, benevolent, charitable, and generous, but not active in politics. (Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Mississippi, Volume 2 (1891).

***Is this is stepsister, Sarah Alford Fortson? Some researchers speculate that she married her step brother, William McLemore. If so, this would make her both a stepsister and sister-in-law to Amos. Sarah Alford Fortson, however, was born ca 1837 in Alabama. This would make her around age 43 in 1880. Lauderdale, Mississippi marriage records show a Mrs Mary Fortson and William McLemore marrying on 12 July 1840.

He was not listed as among the survivors of his father, Albert George McLemore, who died in 1940.
April Makerney writes that his widow, Ethel (born ca 1901 in OK), was living in a Tulsa area boarding house and working as a stenographer as of the 1930 census. April also believed they were without issue. However, the Ledesma Family tree shows that Amos McLemore and Ethel Crowder were the parents of three sons, Graden Haskell McLemore (1917-1917), Coy Hershel McLemore (1919-1928) and Aubrey Alvin McLemore, born 1921.

Rev. William P. McLemore instead lists him as Harmon Andrew McLemore. This might be the "Herman" A. McLemore show married Lola Mae Green on 7 Sept 1941 in Loudon County, Tennessee.
An unsourced tree on ancestry does show that his wife was indeed Leola Mae Green, and that they had two children.

McLemore Burying Ground, Montgomery, Alabama
From DAR records 1936
The McLemore Burying Ground is about one mile off the Montgomery -Atlanta
Highway to the right facing east, and is about five miles from Montgomery.
It is on a knoll behind the old James McLemore home built about 1820. In
1936 Mrs. Lizzie Taylor Dickerson occupied it. A low brick wall and
iron fence surrounds the lot. Outside the main cemetery is another smaller
one, also enclosed. There are graves of slaves and faithful servants, mostly
unmarked outside all enclousures. Graves listed begin at the southwest
corner of the plot.

(Medical):A direct male descendant, still bearing the McLemore surname, participated in the Morrison yDNA study. He was predicted to be in the R1a haplogroup, common in many parts of Eurasia and Scandanavia. However, he does not currently have any matches among the other 15 members with the McLemore surname in the study. It is possible that there were several founding McLemore lines, instead of just one as has been long assumed. Or another possibility could be that undisclosed adoptions have occurred through the generations of descendants of both James and/or Abraham.
At the time of the 1850 Shelby County, Tennessee census, an A.J. McLemore, age 27, born in Tennesse, and listed as a Lawyer with $2,000 in Personal Property, was a boarder in the home of A.F. and Eliza Gibbs. They were living in the fourth ward of Memphis. Also boarding in the home were two other attornies, James LAMB and Thos. GHOLSON, and with R.F. BROWN, a Physician.

DEATH OF ANDREW J. McLEMORE
The telegraph from Richmond on Saturday night last, brought us the sad intelligence of the death of this gentleman, by drowning, in that city, on the Wednesday previous. No particulars of the melancholy casualty are given.
Mr. McLemore was the son of Col. John C. McLemore, of this ciy. He was of a noble and generous nature, a warm friend, and a true man. He leaves, both in this city and throughout the State, a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn his melancholy fate and untimely end.
Memphis Daily Appeal
October 17, 1861
Death of A.J. McLemore--We find the following notice of the drowning of our late friend Andrew J. McLemore in the Richmond Examiner of the 11 inst.:
A young gentleman, named Andrew Jackson McLemore, from Tennessee, inspired with a patriotic desire to join the Confederate forces, either as a private or under commission, arrived in this city some two or three days last past, and, on last night, about half past seven o'clock, walked into the canal, and was drowned. A coroner's inquest was held, at which the jury returned the following verdict" "The deceased came to his death by accidental downing in the James River and Kanawha canal, near Eighth Street, in the city of Richmond" There is a brother of the deceased in a Tennessee company commanded by Capt. Bennet, at Manassas, to which place he was desirous of going, and, side by side with his brother, battle with his country's foes; but, alas! the wire's winged messenger wafted to his fond parents the melancholy tidings of his death and blighted hopes. His remains were cared for by his friends from his gallant State now in the city.

Andrew J. McLemore, Esq.
The Richmond correspondent of the Petersburg Express gives the following account of the death of Andrew J. McLemore, Esq. of Memphis, who was accidentally drowned in Richmond on the 9th inst. We knew Mr. McLemore from boyhood, and we knew him to possess one of the warmest of hearts, a bright intellect and high toned honor. He was graduated, with the highest honors, at the University of Nashville, and soon after located in Memphis, where he has ever since resided, with the exception of a few years in San Francisco, California. Mr. McLemore was on his way to Manassas, to join the army, at the time of his death. He has three brothers in the army, at the time of his death. He has three brothers in the army, two at Columbus and one at Fairfax Court House. He was a son of Col. Jao. C. McLemore who, for many years, resided in this city. The following are the remarks of the Richmond correspondent:
Another gallant young soldier has gone to the tomb before he had an opportunity of serving his country on the battlefield. Andrew Jackson McLemore, from Memphis, Tenn., reached this city some three or four days ago and stopped at the Spotswood House, intending to proceed to Manassas at an early day, where he has a brother serving in Captain Bennett's company. Night before last, while endeavoring to grope his way to the Petersburg depot, he accidentally fell into the canal and was drowned. his body was found yesterday, and a key bearing the number of his room at the hotel disclosed his identity. He had letters from his father to President Davis, and other distinguished public functionaries, which had never been presented. An inquest was held by the coroner, & verdict of death by accidental drowning rendered, and his body placed in a metallic burial case and deposited in the vault at Hollywood to await the requisition of friends.
Biographical Sketch of A. J. McLemore, Walnut Grove Township, Greene County, Missouri
From "History of Greene County, Missouri," St. Louis: Western
Historical Company, 1883.
A. J. McLemore was born in Monroe County, East Tennessee, September 10,
1829. His father, Mr. A. McLemore, was a native of North Carolina,
born March 11, 1787. He died in Tennessee. The subject of this sketch
was the youngest child of his parents, there being nine older than he.
When fifteen years old, he came to Greene County, Mo., and after a
short stay at Springfield, went to Dade County. In 1851, he, with other
adventurers, took the gold fever and went to California. Here he re-
mained some five years, and accumulated a considerable sum of money.
Returning to Dade County, Mo., in 1857, he speculated in live stock a
short time, but returned to California in the spring of 1857, accomp-
anied by his wife (Dialtha Alexander) to whom he had been married in
February 5, 1857. They drove a large herd of stock through to the West
on which Mr. McLemore realized handsomely. They located in Eldorado
County on a stock ranch, remaining eighteen months. Returning to Miss-
ouri, Mr. McLemore bought the old Alexander homestead near Ozark, on
which he remained till the civil war. He then sold out and made a trip
to Texas, but returned almost immediately, and located again just north
of Ozark, where he remained till he moved to where he now lives, near
Walnut Grove. He has one of the best improved farms in the northwest
part of Greene County, his residence being elegant and well located.
Seven children have been born to Mr. McLemore and wife, six of whom,
Ida F., John S., Detroit M., Maggie M., Greeley N. and Myrtle O., are
still living. The deceased child was their first born, a son named
Cornelius A., born June 23, 1859 and died March 23, 1863.

Not located on the 1920 census. In 1930, he was living with his mother and two brothers, and not with first wife Elizabeth of their son, R. H. McLemore.
Dolores McLemore McKee writes that her parents, Angelo and Pauline McLemore moved to California in 1935 where he worked for various large land owners, mostly in the fruit industry He also spent several summers working in Oregon and Washington. There he worked on McNary Damn located on the Columbia River. This was the time that irrigation was being developed for all the farming on both sides of the Columbia River. He was baptized ca 1950 Kennewick First Christian Church. He joined his son in Dallas in 1954 in his plumbing company. He passed away on August 15, 1959 while fishing on the White River in Arkansas. He is buried in Dallas along side his wife, Pauline (his second wife).
Although the SSDI shows that Angelo was born 7 Jan 1903, Dolores notes that her own birth certificate indicates her father was born in 1902.
When he registered for the draft during World War I, he was listed as a resident of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and his occupation was railroad grading for Boy Creston Co in Purvis, Mississippi. His nearest relative was Mathene, Laura. He was tall and stout, with blue eyes and light hair. The date of his registration was September 12, 1918. The date of birth shown on draft registration was December 31, 1899. On the SSDI it is instead shown as December 31, 1898. FindAGrave also shows him as born in 31 Dec 1898. He is buried with his wife, Gertrude (maiden name not listed), who was born 11 Jan 1898 and died 5 Jun 1961. Gertrude's maiden name is shown by some as PIERCE. Said to have been the parents of three.

James McLemore writes that "Another daughter, Ann, Anna or Anny apparently did not marry; her own will, which she signed as Anny McLemore, was dated August 18, 1818, was admitted to probate January 15, 1835, in Southhampton County (Will Book 11, p. 352), referred to her brother Gilliam McLemore, but bequeathed her property to her granddaughter Susanna Carter, daughter of HER daughter Susanna Woodward! Ann survived her brother Gilliam, and was later paid by his estate ten dollars for briefly keeping his children after his death. (James L. McLemore, III, p. 73)"
Jim White (jim4@whitesnet.net) instead believes, however, that Anna m: 1st. John Lewis - no children - m: 2nd Hanson (Ransom?) Carter (daughter Susannah) & died before January 15, 1835 Southampton County Virginia.
At the time of the 1900 Cumberland County, NC census, a 54 year old Annie McLemore was living in the home of Edward C. and Lena McLemore. She was listed as "Aunt," and her date of birth was shown as Nov. 1845. She was single.
Bonnie Seiler shows her instead as the mother of an Edward C. McLemore.
It appears to have been Anna, and not her cousin Ann McLemore (daughter of Raiford McLemore and Polly Underwood) who sold the following land in 1885: Cumberland County, NC Deed Book 79, p 353 Ann McLEMORE to John AVERITT 197 1/2 acres adjacent JESSUP and in 1890: Cumberland County NC Deed Bk 90 p 403 Ann McLEMORE to Wm. BYRD 42 acres on Harrison Creek. Her brother, Haywood, also sold land adjacent to the Jessup's in Cumberland County.
Shown by some researcher as Anna Elizabeth or Alenda. Shown on an unsourced Ancestry.com record as have been born in Clarke County, MS and dying in Texas on 26 Jan 1903.
Mary Lynn Santa and Stephaun Paul instead show she was born ca 1835, and both also show that she died on 2 Apr 1908 in Mississippi. Paul shows two children born to her marriage to Charles Knight, Mary and Catherine, both born in Perry County, Mississippi. A widowed A. M. Knight, born ca 1835 in Mississippi is listed in Beat 2, Wayne County, MS as of the 1880 census. She is shown as a farmer, with both parents born in Tennessee. Living in her houshold are 30 year Elizabeth Battey, white, house servant, and Elizabeth's children Bula (7) and Charley (3). All the members of the Battey family were shown as born in Alabama.
Her FindAGrave memorial page shows she was married first to George Redus, and second to Dr. Goza. Links her to her children, Louis A Redus, George Mathew Redus, and Ada Pauline Goza.
A note from Andrew Ewing indicates that he helped deliver twin daughters born to Billy McLemore and his wife in 1859....it appears that Annie Louise was born along with a sister, who appears to have died young.

A photo of a double tombstone for Archibald and Sarah Plumlee can be seen on FindAGrave, in the Click Cemetery, Madisonville, Monroe, Tennessee. However, it appears to be a comtemporary marker, probably placed sometime well after their deaths. Additionally, the dates of birth and death, at least for Archibald, are not correct. A photo of this marker can be seen here:
The dates on this headstone for Archibald are listed as 1767-1829.
1767 is the approximate date of birth of another Archibald McLemore, the progenitor of the Sampson/Duplin line, and not the Archibald McLemore that lived in Knox County, Tennessee. A biography of a A. J. McLemore, a son of Archibald McLemore of Knox County, states that his father Archibald was born "on March 11, 1787."
Additionally, it appears that Archibald was alive in 1829, most likely dying in the mid 1830's.
Tom Heseltine, who is descended from Archibald McLEMORE and Sarah PLUMLEY of Knox Co emailed, in June, 2009 that "Most available information, including the 1917 Dade Co MO book, the 1889 Goodspeed book, and the obituary of Archibald McLEMORE jr., all state that Archibald McLEMORE and wife Sarah PLUMLEY died ca 1824/1825. This is curious since their son Wesley was born 1827 and the youngest son Andrew Jackson was born 1828. And, the 1830 Knox Co TN census lists one Archibald McLEMORE with the correct number of young sons and a female the correct age to be his wife. I strongly suspect that the family story about their deaths has been miscalculated by at least 5 years and, most probably, 10 years."
Eddie Maynard agrees with Tom, but has a more specific estimate of the date of death, putting it about 1832: "If you combine the two Bios for his sons Andrew Jackson and for Archibald Jr, it sort of make sense for Archibald Sr's death date. Since Andrew knew his father's birth date, he must have had a Bible or source to have known the complete date....very often people would just say the year or he was about 45 when he died. BUT, since Andrew knew the complete date, I think he really did know. Next, I do think that Archibald Jr knew the age of his father's death of 45. So, if you take the date of 1787 and add 45...Archibald Sr died in 1832...which does make more sense. Archibald Jr says his father died in 1825 which we know had to be wrong since Andrew was born in 1829 and Archibald is on the 1830 Monroe County, TN census. Also, Archibald Jr says that he went to live with his brother Abram as a young man and in 1827 was part of the "posse" to gather the Cherokee for the Trail of Tears....it couldn't be 1827, it was 1837-38. Now, if Archibald J r(B.1817) is a young man when he went to live with his brother...he would have been - 20 at that time he went on the "posse". If his father died in 1832, Archibald Jr would have been only 15 and probably did live with his brother Abram. Archibald Sr couldn't have lived much later than 1832 because then Archibald Jr would have been an adult and probably wouldn't have needed to live with his brother since the children inherited land in Monroe."
