Burger King Chairman (1970-76)

Author of books:
The Burger King: Jim McLamore and the Building of an Empire (1998)

James W. McLemore was born to wealth, but his father lost the family fortune in the stock market crash of 1929 and became a turkey farmer. His mother was committed to a mental hospital shortly thereafter, and he never saw her again, as children were not allowed to visit. As a young man McLamore worked as a restaurant manager and then owner, and in 1954 he became Dave Edgerton's business partner in the first Burger King, originally called Insta Burger King. Three years later McLamore proposed adding a "Whopper" to the menu, basing the recipe on a terrific burger he bought from a competitor's burger stand. Edgerton and McLemore sold the company to Pillsbury in 1967, with McLemore remaining as President. He oversaw the introduction of the first version of the company's iconic "Burger King" advertising character in 1970.

For 27 years, Mr. McLamore had been with the RCA Victor Company. His specialty was radar engineering. He had become one of the most important men in the company and had done well in the matter of his own financial affairs. Mr. McLamore had high-security clearance with the US Defense Department and was involved with top secret plans.

For a number of years, John McLamore had been in Wichita Falls and Seymour for Christmas. He often visited in the home of his cousin, Mrs. J.W. "Madge [Plants]" McKee of New York.

Obituary

R.S. McLemore

Died:--At his home near Wheeling, La., June 15, 1906, R. S. McLemore, age 75 years, 8 months and 24 days.

His remains were interred at Mt. Zion Cemetery June 16.

He died where he and had lived for thirty-nine years, and wehre he reared all his family. His troubles were complicated and either one of them were sufficient to cause death.

The deceased was a true and loving husband and a kind and faithful father. He was a noted Christian, and a peacemaker among men. He was loyal to his country, having served four years in the Confederate Army. God, in his wisdom, saw fit to tak him away, but oh! how sad to part with one so near and dear.

He leaves a wife and ten children and a host of dear friends to mourn his death.

15232 I38007  McLemore  ???  Bef 1785  Yes, date unknown  It is being ASSUMED that Reuben, Matthew and Dorcus McLemore, all born between 1805 and 1811 in South Carolina, and residents of Copiah County, MS at the time of the 1850 and/or 1860 census are likely siblings, and were born to a currently unknown McLemore father.

This is based not just on their close ages and birthplace, but also on the research of Ann and Eldon McLemore, who provided the following information:

"REUBEN McLEMORE filed a bond for $16,000 in Copiah. Named on the bond were ELIZABETH McLEMORE (wife???), Virginia Marsh, MATHEW McLEMORE (brother???) and Uriah Millsap, dated 5 Dec 1860. Signed by all except Virginia."

Ann and Eldon also state that guardianship for Mary Ann Whitehead, a daughter of Dorcus (nee McLemore), was probated for Mary Ann to Reuben McLemore, brother of her mother, on 22 Mar 1867."

Ann and Eldon believe that the parents of Reuben, Matthew and Dorcus are John McLemore and Winnie Baltice. No evidence has been found, however, to prove this link.

It also appears that the reference to Winnie Baltice might actually be to Vinie Batiste, who married another McLemore and was not the mother of Reuben, Matthew or Dorcus of Copiah County; or Wesley or John of Scott County, whom Ann and Eldon speculate might also be siblings of Reuben, Matthew and Dorcus.

The father came to this state in territorial days, establishing his home near Duncan, in what was then known as Indian Territory, in 1888. Ther he followed agricultural pursuits until 1896, when he removed to Tahlequah, where he resided until March, 1898, and then made his wasy to Stonebluff, in which town he was assasinated on the 16th of March, 1909. Shot in the Back
A. L. McLemore Assassinated While Setting Out Fruit Trees

Haskell, Okla., Marcy 17--At Stone Bluff, near here, A. L. McLemore was shot in the back while setting out fruit trees on his farm. Another bullet hold in his head and powder marks indicates that the assassin fired into the mans' skull at close range after he had been shot from behind. A negro tenant with whom McLemore had been having trouble over a settlement for rent is suspected and deputy Joe Depew with blood hounds left here for the scene of the crime.

The dead man was wealthy and prominent.

15289 I26167  McLemore  Albert Sydney  23 May 1869  13 Jul 1921  In "The Leatherneck" dated May 12, 1923, an article announced the formation of a new chapter of the "Marine Corps Veteran's Association" in Houston, Texas. The chapter was called the McLemore Detachment in honor of Col. Albert S. McLemore USMC. Col. McLemore served 28 years in the Marine Corps and the article said that during the World War he was in charge of recruiting and publicity and, in 1919, he assumed the duties of Asst. Adjutant and Inspector of the Dept. Of the Pacific. The article announced that the McLemore Detachment has the following officers: N.J. Curtis, George Schleeter, Walter E. Baust, Ira L. Hinton and states that "Marines and ex-Marines who are from Texas, or who have ex-buddies from that state may get full information by writing to Ira L. Hinton, Old Federal Building, Houston, Texas." These former Marines were the "plank-owners' of this Detachment. The Marine Corps Veteran's Association then became the Marine Corps League so our Detachment has roots back to the earliest days. Why it was decided to honor Col McLemore by naming the "chapter" after him has been lost to time. But here is a short biography of Col. A.S. McLemore.

Albert Sydney McLemore was a native of Murfreesboro, TN. Born in 1869, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps on July 1, 1893. He served with the Marine Guard aboard U.S.S. New York in 1894 and aboard U.S.S. Philadelphia from 1895 to 1897. During the Spanish-American War he served with Co. E, First Marine (Huntington's) Battalion, North Atlantic Fleet from April 22, 1898 to September 20, 1898. He was present ashore at Guantanamo, Cuba in defense of Camp McCalla June 11, 12 and 13, 1898 for which he was later appointed Captain by Brevet on March 18, 1901 for "distinguished conduct and public service in the presence of the enemy at Guantanamo, Cuba". This was a particularly high honor in a time when there no decorations in the Naval service to award bravery for officers. The Medal of Honor was reserved for enlisted men only until after the Mexico Campaign in 1914. He had a long career in the Marine Corps serving on numerous ships and stations. By 1917 he had been promoted to Colonel and became Asst. Adjutant and Inspector in the Marine Corps. In 1918 he assumed the duties of Officer-in-Charge of the Marine Corps Recruiting Publicity Bureau in New York, N.Y. He was named to receive a Brevet Medal for his Distinguished Conduct in Cuba in 1898 but he died at Mare Island, CA from cancer on July 13, 1921.
