Stephen White McDaniel, "Papa Bear" to his grandson, was born in Alexandria, Louisiana to Robert Cecil McDaniel and Loye Winona White McDaniel on July 22, 1944 while his father was stationed with the Army at Camp Claiborne. While born in LA, Stephen's parents had deep roots in Sabine County, Texas dating back to the 1850s, and Stephen lived in this community off and on throughout his childhood. To begin his legal career, Stephen and his wife, Marcia, moved with their 3 year-old son, Steve, to Longview, TX in 1973 making this their forever home. Stephen loved Longview and East Texas, and his community involvement spanned business, church, education and the arts (both performing and visual).
Stephen, age 80, passed away on December 2, 2024 in Longview, TX surrounded by loved-ones.
Growing-up in an Army family, Stephen experienced different countries and cultures from a young age which fueled a life-time love of travel and all types of art, architecture, history and gardening. At the age of 3, he sailed with his mom from San Francisco to Okinawa aboard the U.S. Army Transport, General W.G. Haan, to join his father stationed at the Headquarters of the Ryukyus Command, Army Operation. They lived in a Quonset on a hillside of the island. In December 1948, his family left Okinawa aboard the ship, Simon B. Buckner, Jr., relocating to Fourth Army Headquarters, Fort Sam Houston, TX. After 3 years at Fort Sam Houston, Stephen's father was reassigned to the Eniwetok Atoll, Marshall Islands, South Pacific which was used for the testing of the first hydrogen bomb explosion. During this time, Stephen returned with his mom to Sabine County and to the Gravel Hill and Six Mile communities of Hemphill, TX.
In 1952, Stephen's father was assigned to the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. They lived in military housing on the South Post of Fort Myer which is part of Arlington National Cemetery. After 3 years in Washington, Stephen's father took a position in the Joint Headquarters of the Caribbean Command, Quarry Heights, Canal Zone. Panama was an adventure for Stephen, and he loved to tell stories of swimming and fishing in the ocean, taking a submarine ride off the coast and growing-up with sloths in the backyard. During this time, he accepted Christ and was baptized at Balboa Heights Baptist Church of Panama.
Stephen returned to Sabine County for his last year of high school and become known as a talented football player. He graduated from Hemphill High School in 1962. He attended Baylor University and majored in English and Psychology. He received his Juris Doctorate from Baylor Law School in 1969. It was during these years that he met his beloved wife of over 55 years, Marcia Sue Burlison. She was a new professor in the Physical Education Department at Baylor. Stephen and Marcia married on March 22, 1969.
After law school, Stephen joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a Special Agent under J. Edgar Hoover and trained a Quantico. His first assignment was in Milwaukie, WI where their first child was born, Stephen White McDaniel II. After a year, he was transferred to the San Francisco office where they lived for 3 years.
After 4 years in the FBI and a desire to practice law, Stephen came to Longview in 1973 to join the law firm of Sharp, Ward and Ross. In 1975, Stephen and Marcia welcomed a daughter, Erin Colleen McDaniel.
In 1983, wanting to make a change in property title law and record-keeping, which had not changed in more than a century, Stephen ventured into building his own database for Gregg County. U.S. Title Company, Inc. was born in 1984. Additionally, there were some pre-packaged title software programs, but Stephen felt there was a better way. With the help of his long-time friend, and computer expert, Leonard Knipe, a program was written specifically for U.S. Title. As word spread of the success and ease of this new program, there were requests from others across the state to use the same software program. Stephen formed a company to build title plants for others in Texas. Hamp Smead, a Longview attorney, joined Stephen to expand the business, and in February opened a data entry company on the island of Barbados. Over time, Stephen expanded U.S. Title and opened offices in Gilmer, Henderson, Marshall and Hemphill.
Stephen loved the community of Longview and considered it a privilege to serve East Texas. He served on several Boards of Directors, including Longview Museum of Fine Arts, Neal McCoy's East Texas Angel Network, White Oak State Bank, First Bank Shares of Texas, Longfellows and Trinity School of Texas. He also served as President of the Board of the Longview Museum of Fine Arts and as Vice President of Parentline which evolved into Teen Court. Additionally, he was on the Board of Directors of the East Texas Regional Airport Board during the time of the Challenger explosion with E.T.R.A. becoming the national staging area for its recoveries. Further, he was a Deacon and Sunday School Teacher of Young Adults at the First Baptist Church of Longview.
In 1990, Stephen's son, Steve, age 20, died in a car wreck with two of his dear friends. Steve had pledged the Kappa Sigma fraternity at Texas Christian University. The young men of Kappa Sigma, many of which were from Longview, formed The Stephen McDaniel Memorial Scholarship Fund. Stephen looked forward each year to hosting an annual wild game dinner in Fort Worth often with his own game, as well as, participating in skeet shoot competitions with the Kappa Sigs. He loved these men and his relationships with them continue to this day.
Stephen was known for his wise counsel, compassion for others, tender heartedness, a teasing sense of humor and a huge smile with a mischievous glint in his eyes. In addition to being an attorney, businessman and entrepreneur, he was an avid reader, artist, outdoorsman and gardener. Most evenings, he could be found in his favorite chair with numerous books by his side and whittling on wax or wood or polishing metal that he had just melted and poured for his jewelry designs. His gardening passion was roses which were proudly displayed around his home and U.S. Title office. Stephen loved his Lord and Savior and considered it an honor to ministry to young adults for over 30 years. His greatest joys were his children, Steve and Erin, and his grandson, Stephen who was born in 2015. He had 9 precious years getting to watch his grandson grow, learn and experience life. He loved every minute.
Stephen's favorite sport was quail hunting, especially if his best dog, Belle, was by his side with pheasant hunting being a close second. His other passion was big sheep hunting, and he loved the physical challenges of the hunt and being in the beautiful nature surrounding him. His most exciting sheep hunts were for Dall Sheep in the Northwest Territory and Argalis in Mongolia.
Stephen is survived by his wife Marcia Sue Burlison McDaniel, their daughter Erin Colleen McDaniel Roach, son-in-law Russell Lee Roach and grandson Robert "Stephen" McDaniel Roach of Longview, TX. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Patricia Tweeten McDaniel and nephew Harper Longstreet McDaniel of Houston, TX, his sister-in-law Theronne Rue Burlison Singletary and brother-in-law Victor "Allen" Singletary of Knoxville, TN, and nephew Bradley Allen Singletary, his wife Gina Janeway Singletary and their son Evan Sloan Singletary of Maynardville, TN.
He was predeceased by his parents, Robert Cecil McDaniel and Loye Winona White McDaniel of Hemphill, TX, his son Stephen White McDaniel II of Longview, TX, and his brother Dwight Patrick McDaniel of Hemphill, TX.
The Pallbearers are Jim Barron, Herman Bell, Frank Chaney, Bill Chappell, Jim Heath, Harold Johnson, Charles Newkirk, Bill Reagan, Rogers Pope, John Ross, Carroll Sherman, Russell Welch, and Charles Rader.
The family would like to thank Stephen's caregiver of 5 years, Sherry Jones, for her tireless, faithfulness and ever-present care of Stephen and great love for him and his family. She blessed the McDaniel Family beyond what words can ever describe.
We would also like to thank Isabel Cabrera, Ernestina and Angel Monsivais, Brianna Solis, Juan Vaca, and Kristin White for their love and care of Stephen and his family through the years.

In his autobiography, Robert Cecil McDaniel wrote that his son Stephen graduated from Hemphill High School in June, 1962, where he played football. He took freshman English at Stephen F. Austin, and then attended Baylor University starting the fall of 1962. Between school terms he worked with the Parks and Recreation Department of the City of Orange, and graduated from Baylor Law School in 1969. He accepted a four year appointment as Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and attended the FBI Academy at Quantico, later serving as a field ageny in Milwaukee and then San Francisco.
In 1940, the federal census enumeration shows that Talmadge, age 29, was married to an Elizabeth, his same age, and living in Harris County, Texas. Talmadge was shown as born in Texas and working as a cord wood contractor. Elizabeth was born in New Mexico. Both has lived in rural Sabine County five years earlier. They had two sons listed with them, 4 year old Arthur and 3 year old John S. The Texas Birth Index has listings for a Falmage Arthur McDaniel, born 5 Jan 1936 in Bexar County, TX to Falmage (sic) McDaniel and Elizabeth McDaniel; and for John Samuel McDaniel, born 2 Mar 1937 in Bexar County to Talmadge McDaniel and Elizabeth McDaniel. It is not known with certainty if Elizabeth's maiden name was indeed McDaniel, or if both birth records inadvertantly used her married surname instead of maiden name. She is shown as Elizabeth McDaniel McDaniel on her Find A Grave memorial page.

Could this be the same person as John Waldon McDaniel, who according to his Texas Death Certificate was born in Kirbyville, TX on 26 Dec 1916 and died in Kingsville, Texas? That death certificate, with his widow Mary McDaniel being the informant, indicated John Waldon McDaniel worked for Exxon and was a veteran of World War II. His parents, however, were listed as "unknown."
White & Toole, "Sabine County Historical Sketches and Genealogical Records", pages 46 and 47 show that "In 1786, Absalom McD. made his will naming wife Bartha and sons, WILLIAM, Hiram and Jehiel. Hiram also moved to Georgia about 1798. Absalom's estate was on the Savanah River. His father, James had rec'd 640 A. plus 756 A. in 1796. In 1813, Alexander McD., Wm. McD. acting as his attorney, sold over 1000 acres of land to Moses Swearingen. Much of the information about the family of William and Dosha McDaniel was taken from a letter rec'd by the late Lewis McD. of Sabine County from a cousin in Alabama, in 1924. The letter was from John Matheny. He obviously copied if from the family Bible, for most of these lines have been researched from then until present, and they have checked out to be correct."
His FindAGrave memorial page, created by Kay Parker McCary, shows him as a son of Lee McDANIEL (1842-1906, FAG # 13669391) and Lanney McDANIEL (1859-1936, FAG #13669389), both buried at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Yellowpine. His mother, shown as Lanie, was living with William his wife of 12 years, Mary (nee McClelland) at the time of the 1930 federal census, in JP 1 of Sabine County.

Robert Cecil McDaniel, a descendant, wrote in his autobiography that "My McDaniel ancestors migrated west from the Edgefield District near Spartanburg, South Carolina, and apparently stopped for a time in Mississippi. They were enumerated in the federal census of 1850, both in Itwambia County, Mississippi, and in Sabine County, Texas." He also indicated that they settled in the community later to be known as Fairdale, in the southeastern part of Sabine County.

Robert Cecil McDaniel wrote that she married Edgar TINSLEY and during World War II, they were living in Oakland, California. She shares a double grave marker with Edgar at the Oak Hill Cemetery. Only her date of birth was carved as of the 1997 death of Edgar, so it appears he preceded her in death.
Obituary
Zuda Lee McDaniel Tinsley 95, after a gracious journey down this last difficult portion of life's path, Zuda died on April 30, 2016 just hours after the birth of a new baby girl in the family.
Zuda was born in Yellowpine on August 14, 1920. After high school, she rode the train alone to the California/Oregon border to join her newly wedded husband, Edgar Tinsley. During their 57 years of marriage, they had two daughters.
Zuda worked for the school district in Redding, California as the manager of food services. She retired prematurely from those responsibilities to join Edgar in Alaska to manage a remote fishing lodge for many summers. Those were halcyon days for the both of them.
Zuda was preceded in death by her husband Edgar and their daughter, Sharon. She leaves her daughter, Carolyn and four beloved grandchildren, Adam, Allison, Kirsten, and Justin and their loved ones.
Son-in-law, Reverend Richard Pearson will conduct services at the graveside at Oak Hill Cemetery. Graveside will be at 2:00PM, May 7, 2016, in the Oakhill Cemetery. To all who claim a friendship or kinship, a heartfelt thanks for enriching her life.

Hector L. McDermott
The following account of the death of Hector L. McDermott, whose passing was noted in the Chronicle last week, is taken from a Santa Anna, California, newspaper:
Arrangements for services for Hector L. McDermott, who died at his home at 1209 North Main street last Friday afternoon, today were being delayed pending word of the return of his brother, H. (sic) M. McDermott, who is at Fuerte, Mexico, where he is general manager of the El Fuerte Smelting and Mining company.
Two telegrams have been send advising him of his brother's death. As he has not answered, it is assumed by relatives that he is either at the mine, which is sixty or more miles from a telegraph office, or traveling in the district in the interest of his company.
Decedent was vice-president of McDermott, Mount and Company, implement dealers at 318 West 4th street. He came here eight years ago from Eagle Rock, Cal., and entered business at the address given. Prior to locating at Eagle Rock in February 1912 the family resided at Cass City, Mich., where Mr. McDermott was president of the city council and where he was active in city and social activities.
He was a Mason and Odd Fellow, holding membership in these lodges at Cass City. He was a member of the Santa Ana Kiwanis club and a teacher of the Mateer Bible class of the First Presbyterian church.
During his business life here he won the confidence and esteem of associates and patrons as well as friends and acquaintances made in a social way.
He had been suffering with paralysis for six months. He was born near Teeswater, Ontario, Canada, October 18, 1866, and came to the United States in 1881.
Mr. McDermott is survived by his mother, Mrs. Margaret McDermott, 134 West Twentieth street; his widow, Mrs. Barbara McDermott; a daughter, Miss Belle McDermott, teacher in Greenville school; two sons, Alton, a pupil at the high school, and Justin, who is attending the Polytechnic school of Engineering at Oakland; three brothers, H.A. McDermott, Los Angeles; Hugh McDermott, Port Huron, Mich.; and Alan M. McDermott, Santa Ana.

FELL DEAD IN CORN FIELD
H.C. McDermott Is the Victim of Heart Disease.
Funeral Services Will Be Held in the Presbyterian Church Saturday Afternoon.
H.C. McDermott dropped dead about ten o'clock Wednesday forenoon, while assisting Morton Orr, who was at work in a corn field on his mother's farm in the eastern limits of the town. Mr. McDermott was subject to attacks of heart trouble and early Wednesday morning complained of a pain in his side. Home remedies were applied and then he went over to the Orr farm and tried to work in the field. Suddenly he fell to the ground and expired almost immediately. Help was summoned and his body was taken to the home of his son, H.L. McDermott, a short distance from where he had been working. Heart failure is given as the cause for his sudden demise.
Hugh Carson McDermott was born in Three Rivers, Quebec, May 20, 1837. Forty-six years ago he was united in marriage to Miss Margaret McLean at Teeswater, Ont. She still survives him. They came to Michigan in 1882, settling on a farm in Grant Township, where they resided until four years ago when they moved to Cass City. Their five children, four sons, A.J., of Douglas, Arizona; A.M., of Los Angeles, Cal.; Hugh, who still resides on the old homestead in Grant Township; H.L. of this place; and one daughter, Mrs. E. Sedweek of Calumet, are all living. He also has a brother in Los Angeles and a sister in Seattle.
Through the death of Mr. McDermott the village has lost one of her best citizens, a Christian man of excellent habits, quiet, unobtrusive in his manner, yet winning the esteem of everyone he met along life's way. He was a member of the Presbyterian church, and the funeral services will be held in that church on Saturday afternoon at two o'clock.
(Cass City Chronicle, Oct. 11, 1907, p. 1.)
In March, 2008, Bruce McDermott, a direct descendant, emailed that Hugh's father was Andrew McDermott who was "born in Straban, Tyrone County, Northern Ireland about 1800 I have nothing on him just words on paper my grandfather wrote. Andrews' grandfather came to Northern Ireland
from Lock Awe, Scotland about 1604."

On Saturday, May 30, Bluford McDonald passed away at his home in Yellowpine, at the age of 77. He was born August 10, 1858, at Lidago, Ala. Being an orphan, he accepted the invitation of his brother, at about the age of 10, to come to Gladewater, Texas, where he made his home until manhood.
He was first married to Miss Josephine Davis, of Ringgold, La. To this union were born seven sons and two daughters, of whom two sons and one daughter survive, Jim of Yellowpine, Charlie, of Pineland, and Mrs. E. M. Edgar of Wellington, Texas.
He was later married, December 24, 1906 to Miss Callie Impson, to whom were born three sons and two daughters, three of whom survive, as follows: Louis and Willie McDonald and Mrs. Hollis Stewart, all of Yellowpine. His widow also survives him.
Mr. McDonald was a substantial citizen and an active member of the Baptist church for many years. He was a member of the local school board at the time of his death. The school board was in session at the very time of his death in his home, and he suddenly passed away from attack of heart failure. He lived the greater part of his life in Sabine County.
Interment was made in the Oak Hill cemetery Sunday afternoon. Rev. O. M. Corley, of Hemphill, conducted funeral services.
The pallbearers were Josh Smith, Edward Drowell, Bill Gooch, Hortman Ener, Taylor Smith and Henry Solly.

Paula Jones and Stacey Burton both show him as John Quincy McDonald, and as a son of Robert Knoles McDonald and Ann Elizabeth Latham. This seems unlikely, as John was born in Scotland in 1823, and all of the children of Robert Knoles McDonald, and Ann Elizabeth Latham were born between 1820 and 1832 in Louisiana.
Additonally, Alison Raborn posted the following note to the McDonald Family Genealogy Forum on August 12, 2010:
When Margaret Ann [McDONALD] Bossier, daughter of Robert Knoles & Ann Elizabeth [LATHAM] McDonald, died her husband Sylvestre DeBrune Bossier married Narcissa [WALDROP] McDonald. Narcissa's FIRST husband was John Quincy McDonald. John Quincy McDonald is NOT the father, son, or brother of Robert Knoles McDonald. Here is why: 1850 Sabine Parish Louisiana Census (www.census-online.com)dwelling # 041a41 list the following McDonald family: John, age 27, born in Scotland, Narcissa, age 22, Claiborne, age 5, Betty, age 3, Robert K., age 1, born in Alabama. IN THE SAME CENSUS,but on p.24, dwelling# 095a95 there is listed McDonald, R.K., age 52, born in South Carolina; wife Elizabeth, age 45, born in Louisiana.
Also in the Sabine Parish Louisiana Marriage Records has R.K. McDonald, Justice of Peace, married his granddaughter Louisiana Bossier to a Franklin ALLEN on January 10, 1856. AND R.K.McDonald and Elizabeth's daughter, oldest child, Margaret Ann was born in 1820; therefore her father could not have been 1 year old in 1850. I don't know where in South Carolina R.K McDonald came from, but Narcissa WALDROP's father Claiborne Parish Waldrop and family came from South Carolina's 95th District Newberry County, and showed up in Louisiana about same time R.K. McDonald did. If anyone has any South Carolina information please contact me!
