13501 I23372  Martin  Emile Edgar "Mitz"  3 Jul 1921  17 Feb 2014  Emile E. Martin III, a lawyer who never shrank from opposing the Perez political machine that ran Plaquemines Parish for decades, died Monday (Feb. 17) at his Belle Chasse home. He was 92.

"He was always anti-Perez before it was safe to be that way," said Michael Kirby, a retired state appeals judge. "He had this passion to see things done right and to take up for the little guy against the giants."

Nothing daunted him, Kirby said. "He was never afraid to take on anybody or anything. He might be wrong, but he'd go down fighting. . . . He always fought for what was right."

Mr. Martin locked horns with Leander Perez, the family's patriarch, over desegregation because Mr. Martin believed schools should be integrated, said Johnette Martin, his daughter. "He said we have to provide an equal education for black children. That was the ending point of my father's working with Leander Perez."

He lost his job as the parish's inheritance-tax collector, Johnette Martin said, and his law practice suffered because people were afraid their cases would be doomed if Mr. Martin represented them.

But he carried on, frequently representing poor people who paid him in produce because they had no money, Johnette Martin said.

"We would see people come to the back porch and leave a box of produce to pay my dad," she said. "Once he was paid with a freezer-ready butchered cow.

"My father was a good man. He cared about people."

Mr. Martin, who was elected to a state district judgeship in 1982, after the Perez family lost its clout, was a native of Port Sulphur whose father served on the parish police jury.

He was a baker with the Seabees on a ship in the South Pacific during World War II. After leaving the service, he earned undergraduate and law degrees at LSU and set up a law practice in Plaquemines Parish.

Mr. Martin ran for the Legislature in 1959, but he and the other members of his ticket lost because they were running against the Perez machine.

He kept practicing law until he was elected to the 25th Judicial District bench, where he served one eight-year term.

Among the lawyers who appeared before him was Mark Pivach, a former neighbor.

"He was always fair," Pivach said. "He would always listen and do what he thought was right."

Mr. Martin resumed his law practice after leaving the bench.

Throughout his career, he was adamant once he took a position, his daughter said. "He had the heart of a lion."

Although Mr. Martin could be firm, he had a wry sense of humor, Kirby said. "At one point, his staff pitched in and bought him a sweatshirt that said, 'Grumpy.' He said, 'I'm not grumpy; I'm irascible.'"

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church and the state and parish bar associations. He also worked with Boy Scout Troop 106, and he was an avid fisherman.

Survivors include his wife, Amanda Zahn Martin; five sons, Edward Zahn Martin, Jay Edgar Martin, Robert Dale Martin, David Edward Martin and Gregory Frank Martin, all of Belle Chasse; a daughter, Johnette Leontine Martin of New Orleans; a brother, Ray Martin of Belle Chasse; a sister, Mary Lou Martin of Belle Chasse; and six grandchildren.

A Mass will be said Thursday (Feb. 20) at noon at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Belle Chasse. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m.

Burial will be in Metairie Cemetery.

Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Also South half of Lot No. 8, in Block No 6, and South half Lot No. 11 in Block No. 7.

To Have and to Hold the above described premises, together with all and singular the rights and appurtenances thereto in anywise belonging unto the said Tom Adams, his heirs and assigns, Forever. And I do hereby bind myself and my heirs, executors and administrators, to Warrant and Forever Defend all and singular the said premises unto the said Tom Adams, his heirs and assigns against every person whosoever lawfully claiming or to claim the same or any part thereof.

Witness my hand at Benjamin, Texas this 12th day of January A.D. 1897 signed...J.M. Martin

Lynell Cordell located the land record above, but was unable to locate a J.M. Martin in the cemetery records for Knox County, although she did find a reference to a Sarah Martin buried in the Johnson Cemetery in Munday, Knox County, but with no dates. She did not visit the cemetery. It is possible J.M. and Sarah divorced, as he was not listed in the home with Sarah and their children at the time of the 1900 census. Sarah was listed as widowed, but may have instead been divorced.

Lynell Cordell located the following death record for a J.M. Martin:

Texas Death Index, 1903-2000
Name: J. M. Martin
Death Date: 17 May 1943
Death County: Palo Pinto
Certificate: 24046

Informant on death certificate #24046 was Glenn Martin (son) of Mineral Wells, Palo Pinto Co. TX. He's buried in the Jacksboro Cem.

She also found a 1920 census in Jack Co. with J.M. Martin with wife Stella and two step-sons named Fowler.
Then again in Jack Co. in 1930 it was Moses J. Martin and Stella. He first married at age 26 which fits the 1892 marriage date of J. M. and Sarah.
I just put this part in his notes for now but I would bet on the death record, especially since his son Glenn, with two n's, was the informant. David Adams was supposed to be in Parker or Palo Pinto county also.

He died February 12, 1923 and he is buried in Cliburn Cemetery in Lawrence County, MS. His mother was Permelia Jane Mullens, and she was born June 26, 1848 in MS. She died January 11, 1931. She is also buried in Cliburn Cemetery in Lawrence County, MS.

Could he be a descendant of Norman Martin (b. 1798 in North Carolina) of Clarke County, Mississippi, who had many descendants that would marry into the McLemore family in and around Copiah County?

13529 I7263  Martin  Lewis C. "Case" "Casey"  17 Feb 1857  19 May 1908  AKA shown as Louis/Lewis Cass Martin. Shown simply as "L C Martin" on the death certificates of his daughters Mary and Lavisa. The death certificate of youngest daughter, Violet, instead lists him as Royal Casie Martin. It appears that informant in that case may have been assuming that Violet's brother, Royal Casie Martin, was an exact namesake of his father?

Said to be a child of Thomas Jefferson Martin and Rebecca Richardson of Sabine County by most researchers. Anita Sterling, on the "Anderson Family Tree" at Ancestry.com, shows his parents as Thomas Franklin Martin and Rebecca Richardson.

He and his wife Elizabeth lived next door to Thomas and Rebecca at the time of the 1880 census. Additionally, a Case Martin was shown as a brother of Harriett Martin Strickland, a daughter of Tom and Beckie Martin, in a newspaper column about the upcoming birthday of her son Rev. Bob Strickland in the mid 1960's.

13553 I26737  Martin  Murdoch McDuffie  3 Dec 1822  Yes, date unknown  The Martin and McLemore families of Clarke County, Mississippi appear to have had multiple connections.

Murdoch and Louisa's son, Alexander Martin, married Catherine Risher, whose mother was also a McLemore.

Murdoch's younger brother, Allen, married Eleanor Jane McLemore of Clarke County, Mississippi (parents not known). Additionally, Murdoch's half-brother, the only son of Norman Martin by his second wife, Eleanor Chapman, was Edwin Martin. Edwin married Mary Virginia "Jennie" McLemore of Lauderdale County, Mississippi (a daughter of Caleb Hill McLemore). Murdoch's wife, Louisa McLemore was a first cousin of Caleb Hill McLemore.

Sometime after 1900, the granddaughter of his wife's first cousin, Bama Matilda Grantham (a daughter of Agnes McLemore Grantham of Copiah County, MS) would marry Joseph Edgar Martin, also of Copiah County.
