In the book "A Pictorial History of Sabine County, Texas," Denton Kerr is pictured as a teacher at the Rosevine School circa 1925 through 1929. A fellow teacher was Bertha Fuller, step sister to his future wife, Alice Pointer. Joe S. Fuller, Alice's stepbrother appeared to be a student in the class. Joe was also in a carpentry shop class with Denton and his brother S.A. Kerr.
His Texas Death Certificate, viewable online at FamilySearch.org, Texs Deaths, 1890-1976, shows that he was married at the time of his death, and that the informant was Mrs. Denton Kerr. This is apparently a second wife, as Edna Alice Pointer preceded him in deaht by three years. He was listed as a Physician, and a veteran serving during the World War II. His residence, at the time of his death, was 4730 Creekbend.
Sharon Haynes emailed, in July 2013, that CHARLES Denton Kerr served in the Army 9 Nov 1942 to 23 April 1946; separated as a Major; served as Medical Officer General Surgery; last stationed SAD AAFPDC San Antonio, TX. He married MILDRED MARY MARQUES on 12 Feb 1975 in Alvin, Brazoria County, TX.

There were two Drawhorn families living next to the family of Stephen Austin Kerr on the 1920 Sabine County census. The Kerr's were household #280. Household #279 were James and Mary Drawhorn, parents of three sons, Elva, Otha and Casey, and one daughter, Florence. His Texas Death Certificate, viewable online at FamilySearch.org, Texs Deaths, 1890-1976, shows that he was married at the time of his death, and that the informant was Mrs. Grace Kerr. His usual occupation was listed as that of a Minister of the Gospel. He was buried at West Hill.
Stephanie Kerr Smither, "Nana" will be remembered for her beautiful smile, loving her family, the marriage to her childhood sweetheart, inventive cooking, and always being the last to leave the party! She surrounded herself friends and beautiful objects, was wildly adventurous, fun loving, gracious and a courageous lady. Nana will be remembered for her big hugs, which she gave generously. Nana passed away June 11, 2016 at home surrounded by family and wearing her favorite turquoise rings.
Stephanie was born in Jacksonville, Texas, to Frankie Zou Gaston and Stephen Austin ("S.A.") Kerr, May 4, 1941. Raised in Huntsville, Texas where her parents founded Kerr's Department Store; she spent her days helping to run the store with the daddy she loved. As a young girl she learned the piano, enjoyed baseball and fell in love with her childhood sweetheart - John Henderson Smither. Their favorite place to "park" was Pritchett Pasture, now Interstate 45, where she helped John feed his cattle. Her sister Zou said, "it is hard to remember her before John!" They married while students at the University of Texas at Austin. John was in law school while Stephanie taught at the Texas School for the Deaf. Upon graduation, they moved to Stuttgart, Germany with their two children where John served in the Army. These were fond memories traveling Europe, in their VW bug with kids in the back. They settled in Houston and raised three children. Stephanie was active in the Blue Bird Circle, The Houston Garden Club and Westminster United Methodist Church, though what she enjoyed most was staying at home supporting John and her children with their endeavors.
Stephanie, a "sophisticated hoarder" or (consummate collector), was always on the hunt for handmade and one-of-a-kind objects. She was known for her bright orange lipstick and big jewelry, without which she felt underdressed. She was also known for her creative tablescapes, beautiful penmanship, and famous Smither Salsa. With her East Texas accent, someone said, "Stephanie was the only person she knew who said 'hush' in four syllables". At Christmas her house was filled with carved Santas, her tree covered in her handmade needlepoint angels and the smells of homemade fudge and peanut brittle on the stove. Nana stayed busy all year making the grandchildren's Christmas stockings and their annual needlepoint ornaments.
She and John loved hosting dinner parties and she delighted in cooking scrumptious gourmet meals. They always ended the evening with Stephanie playing the piano barefoot while John and their beloved supper club of 50 years sang into the wee hours. Stephanie thought if people left her house before midnight it was a bad party!
Her favorite activities included cheering for her grandchildren at sporting events, being a "mean" liar's dice player, taking her grandchildren to exotic places, playing Mah Jongg, and spending time with family and friends at Sunset Lake in Huntsville, Texas.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to her generous lung donor and his family, Houston Methodist Hospital, Dr. Scott Scheinin, Dr. Osama Gaber, Dr. Thomas Kaleekal, Sydney Bridges and the staff for their heroic effort over the last 2 ? years. She was able to fulfill her lifetime dream of overseeing the creation of Smither Park, gifting her art to The Menil Collection and completing a documentary about her years as a collector of Visionary Art. In addition, she was honored as one of Houston's 50 Most Influential Women of 2015 by Houston Woman Magazine and as the 2014 Texas Patron of the Year by Art League Houston.
We know Stephanie would also like to thank all the sweet supporters of Smither Park and the artists who were so dear to her. Thank you also to the staff at The Menil Collection who were so wonderful to work with on the current exhibition.
Stephanie felt blessed to spend her last two evenings at the celebration dinner and opening of her collection at The Menil. She was radiant and so touched by the public outpouring of support. Afterwards, family and friends returned to her home for her famous SmitherRitas. She had one last toast, retired to her room, and eased into her final slumber surrounded by family and friends with the joyous sounds of the party below.
She treasured her children and their spouses, John Kerr Smither, Ashley and Curt Langley, Paige and Todd Johnson, and her grandchildren who affectionately called her Nana: Amon Smither; Austin, Madison and Jack Langley; Wells, John David, Pierce, Hill and Blake Johnson; her sister and brother-in-law Zou Kerr and Boyd F. Cherry; sisters-in-law, Martha Smither and Trudie Smither, nieces and nephews, Robert Smither, III, Sallie Crotty, John J. Smither and Mary Kate Jefferies; great grand nieces and nephews Kate and Stephen Crotty and Cole Smither. She was preceded in death by her parents S.A. and Frankie Zou Kerr, her husband John H. Smither and two brothers-in-law Robert B. Smither, Jr. and Wilbur L. Smither, III.
The memorial service celebrating her life is Thursday, June 16th at 10 a.m. at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 3471 Westheimer Rd, Houston, Texas. The graveside service will be held at 5:00 p.m. in Oakwood Cemetery located at 9th Street and Martin Luther King Drive in Huntsville, Texas. It was Stephanie's wish that everyone celebrate her life by wearing a bit of her favorite color, orange.
For those desiring, contributions in Stephanie's memory may be made to: Houston Methodist Hospital Foundation, P. O. The "William Rupert Kerr Lecture in Obstetrics and Gynecology" was established at the University of Texas Medical Branch by Dr. and Mrs. Charles Denton Kerr in memory of their son, Dr. William Rupert Kerr, who practiced obstetrics and gynecology with his father in Houston until he died unexpectedly of a heart attack in 1968. His Texas Death Certificate, viewable online at FamilySearch.org, Texs Deaths, 1890-1976, shows that he was married at the time of his death, contradicting the Texas Death Index on which he was shown as single. He was listed as a Physician, and a veteran serving during the Korean conflict. His cause of death was listed as Ischemic heart disease and coronary artery disease, both of which he suffered from for 9 1/3 years. The informant was Denton Kerr, his father.

Don't know if you heard from Juanita or not, but if you have just ignore this. Juanita heard from a woman named Jo Jean 'Kincannon' Johnson of Lawton. Jo Jean is the daughter of Murl Kincannon of Duncan. Murl was supervisor of the truck shop at Halliburton, Glen said.
Now, Murl was the son of William Perry 'Bill' Kincannon and Florence Jones, and Florence was Star Jones' daughter and a half-sister to Ada Jones (Frank Gentry's wife). And William Perry 'Bill' Kincannon was a brother to Sarah Frances 'Fannie' Kincannon who married Edgar J. Gentry. That's two brother's married half-sisters. Right?
So tell me....if Fannie 'Kincannon' Gentry was a full-sister-in-law to Florence Jones and a half-sister-in-law to Florence's half-sister Ada Jones and then she married Edgar Gentry which made her Frank Gentry's full sister-in-law, doesn't that also make her a full sister-in-law to Ada 'Jones' Gentry? Half AND full sister-in-law? And what does that make their kids?
I love riddles and this one is about as bad as Glen's g-grandfather who was his half-brother's half-uncle. Believe it or not!
I've always wondered what relationship Murl Kincannon was to Fannie because he was a pallbearer in Edgar Gentry's funeral, and now I know. Or at least I think I know....nephew, right? ;-)

Services for Buren Edwin "Mort" King, 79, of Falconhead, Burneyville, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 19, at Falconhead Christian Fellowship Chapel, Burneyville, with the Rev. Lamoin Champ of Nocona, Texas, retired pastor of the First Baptist Church of Burkburnett, Texas, officiating.
Mr. King was born February 20, 1924, in Oklahoma City, the son of Creed H. Sr. and Dora Ann Bolding King. He died Sunday, August 17, 2003, at his residence at Falconhead.
A resident of Falconhead since 1987, Mr. King had previously lived in Burkburnett for 22 years. He and Allie Mae Hanks were married on November 14, 1942, in Lawton. A graduate of Lawton High School, Mr. King attended Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge. Initially enlisting in the Army Air Corps on December 11, 1942, he retired from the Air Force on February 1, 1975, having accrued a total of 32 years of military service. During his military service as an aircraft maintenance technician, Mr. King rose to the rank of Chief Master Sergeant receiving numerous awards and decorations. Scott Masonic Lodge #540 of Lawton and had received the 50-year Service Award. Mr. King was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Burkburnett and the Falconhead Country Club. Mort was faithful in every duty, commitment and endeavor - husband, father, brother, patriot, pilot and golfer. Although it breaks our hearts to see him go, we know that his rest is peaceful and his reward will be sweet. May the winds be beneath his wings forever and his golf game in heaven yet another hole-in-one.
"God saw you getting tired, and a cure was not to be. So He put His arms around you and whispered 'Come with me.' With tearful eyes we watched you slowly fade away. Cloma Rae Corman, the daughter of Ivan and Luella (Kinnison) King, was born on February 7, 1936, in Angus, Nebraska. She passed away at Brodstone Memorial Hospital in Superior on July 8, 2021, after complications from an apparent pulmonary embolism. She was 85 years old.
Cloma attended the Angus one-room grade school through the eighth grade before becoming a student at Edgar High School, graduating in 1953. Soon after graduation she was married to Loren Jensen, and they resided for a brief time in Angus before moving to a farm near Oak.
Cloma and Loren divorced in 1971 and Cloma married John Corman in 1973. The couple was engaged in farming and continued that operation after moving to the village of Oak in 1986.
Cloma was employed as a teacher's aide, bookkeeper and a clerk in her parents' general store in Angus but spent most of her life as a devoted farmer's wife helping John build his farming business. She was an excellent organist, pianist and vocalist and played or sang at numerous weddings and funerals. While she dedicated her life to giving to others, her greatest love was her family. Up until her very brief illness she was living in her home while enjoying a full and active life. Her last major hosting event was an Easter dinner this year when over forty family members attended.
In addition to her husband John, who passed away in 2012, Cloma was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and their husbands, Donna and Eldon Judy and Patty and Smokey Grover as well as son-in law Denny Lipker.
Those who will try to fill the void left by her passing are her sons, Tom Jensen (Jackie), Terry Jensen and Todd Jensen along with step-children Peggy Lipker, Scott Corman (Janie), Carol Andreasen (Rick), Cheryl Yarber and Dixie Fiene (Jonathan) as well as a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends and her Domino Darlings. Also left to mourn her loss is her very special friend, traveling companion and chauffeur, Dean Blain.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday, July 12, at the Williams Funeral Home Chapel in Edgar. Pastor Kevin Bogus will be officiating. Lunch will follow at the Edgar American Legion. Travel to Oak Cemetery for burial will begin after the lunch is completed. Condolences may be sent to the family at wmsfh.com. Williams Funeral Home of Edgar is in charge of the arrangements.

Emma King (Negro)
Emma King returned (sic) on her Sixty-second birthday May 2, 1964 from her job at the Wolfe Hotel in Bronson.
It was a day of quiet sadness for you see, Emma was no ordinary employee at an ordinary hotel. Emma is the only Negro in Bronson, a town that has a reputatin for not allowing one in the city limits.
"I don't see how we can stay here without Emma," mourned Mrs. Dolly Winkle, with Mrs. A. O. Wolfe echoing her sentiments. "She is so wonderful---so always ready to do anything for anybody."
Somehow, despite the sadness, there was an air of suppressed gaity, whispered secrets and a quietness when Emma came by. Then suddenly a cake with 62 candles appeared; someone handed Emma a gaily be-ribboned package, from which an electric mixer emerged, and a full-fledged birthday party was underway.
Mr. and Mrs. A. O. Wolfe, owners of the hotel, and all employees had banded together to buy Emma a small inadequate token of their love and esteem. With overflowing hearts and misty eyes, they wanted to show Emma a bit of what she had meant to them and to the town for the past 57 years.
Born in Many, Louisiana, the youngest of a large family, Emma lost her mother when she was three years old. Her father, grief-stricken and in a quandry as to how to manage to raise his motherless brood, he gave Emma to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Eddings, childless residents of Many at that time, who had fallen in love with the fascinating tyke.
She same with the Eddings family to Bronson in 1906 where Mr. Eddings worked for Kirby Lumber Company and Mrs. Eddings, the former Miss Hattie Bickley, started a kindergarten.
Mrs. Eddings, a woman of great character and infinite patience, lovingly trained Emma in the way that she should go.
She taught her to read and write, and to love good books; she guided her in learning how to sew beautifully and to cook skillfully. She learned to keep an immaculate house and to keep herself clean and neat.
Emma went to church regularly at the First Baptist Church with Mr. and Mrs. Eddings. Early, she took over the care of the church and kept it clean and fresh. At each service, she had her own special corner, where she always sat.
Emma has always been humble and loving everyone with a love that forgets self. She seems not to think of her color. "It's just the way God made me," she casually answers to the children's unthinking asking of why she was diffenent.
As Emma grew up, she developed such a sense of maturity, with such apparent honesty and integrity that she became a leader among the young people. Parents soon began asking "Is Emma going?" when picnics and parties were planned.
If Emma was going, then Susie or Jim could go, too. She was so brimming full of love and goodness, combined with such a sense of fun and laughter that she attracted the children like a magnet.
As a teenager, she learned to drive the family Ford and once, when Hugh N. Wood and Gay Low sponsored a contest to see who could go the furthest on a gallon of gas, she won second place, when she went 41. 1 miles on the gallon.
The cars were lined up at Bronson with one gallon of gas in each and headed towards Beaumont, witht he judges and most of the county tailing behind. When Emma reached Jasper, she yelled "Which way is Beamont?" "It was really fun," she says, "I don't remember who won first place.:
Emma has spent her life doing for others. The Eddingses kept boarders and she was always helpful. If there was a school play, she helped to make the costumes. She seemed to glory in being useful. She chaperoned young people to Beaumont when the trains came to Bronson and ran excursions to the fairs and other festivities.
Emma grew up loved and trusted, down to the present generation of Bronson folks. Beth Walker says that the children always flocked to her house, and she always gave them delicious jelly. She says James Daily, her son, thought that was the only place to get Jelly.
The Eddingses died and left Emma all they owned. She lived on in their comfortable house until her good friend and neighbor, R. W. Ellis, became unable to take care of himself. So what did Emma do? Just as you might expect, she promptly shut her own home up and moved over to take care of Mr. Ellis.
Everyone sings her praises. College students visit her when home; Mrs. E. E. Marshburn says, "She's marvelous and she can really cook!" The Bickleys seem to think she is somethin special. They gave her the car she drives.
"And her price shall be above rubies."

Could he be the James Ernest King, also born ca 1892, who married Edna Tatom in 1922? Seems unlikely as he and Vernon Maund can be found on both the 1920 and 1930 census listings, first in Sabine County and later in Sabine Parish, and responded that they had been married approx. 16 years.

(Research):Could he have married first Vernon Maund? Seems unlikely as the James E. King, also born ca 1892, who married Vernon Maund can be found with her and their three children on both the 1920 and 1930 census listings, first in Sabine County and later in Sabine Parish, and both responded that they had been married approx. 16 years.

KEARNEY - Kent Addison King, 74, of Kearney, fianc?', father, and grandfather, died Saturday, July 23, 2022, at his home after a brief battle with cancer.
Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday at Horner Lieske McBride & Kuhl Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Rick Carlson officiating.
Inurnment will follow at the Kearney Cemetery with military honors graveside.
Kent was born in Kearney on Aug. 26, 1947, to Keith A and Betty S (Sitz) King. He grew up in Kearney, the oldest of five children. He was active in 4H as a child, and that love of animals continued throughout his life. Kent was also active in sports, especially cross country and wrestling. He graduated from Kearney High School in 1965, then attended college at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Kent served in the Army during the Vietnam War, where he was stationed in Germany and traveled all over Europe with his parents when they visited.
Kent married Deborah A Black in 1972, and had two daughters. The couple later divorced. He received an honorable discharge from the army in 1975 and finished his degree in accounting at Kearney State College, graduating in 1978. In 1979, he earned his CPA and worked in Broken Bow, NE. Kent moved back to Kearney in 1981 where he worked at Grower's Ag Service as an accountant. He spent many weekends at Harlan Lake on the boat trying (and failing) to teach his daughters how to fish. In 1998, Kent started his over-the-road trucking business, Platte Valley Express, which he operated until his retirement in 2021.
He enjoyed golf, folk music, and classic rock; he would share his love of music by asking what artist was playing if he thought the song was worth knowing. You could always count on Kent to be watching football; the Huskers were his favorite team, of course. Sunday afternoons were for watching NASCAR races or Gunsmoke reruns with Susan. Kent was a long-time member of the American Legion, Eagles, and Elks. He always wore Levi jeans and a button-up shirt with cowboy boots and loved hearing about his grandkids' many activities.
Survivors include his daughters Rebecca (Steve) Lush of Kearney and Kristina (Jason) Singleterry of Ogallala; his fianc? Susan Simmons of Kearney; brothers, Doug (Rhonda) King and James (Brenda) King of Kearney; sisters, Denise (David) Capek of Lincoln and Kerry (Robert) Broz of Bullhead City, Arizona; 6 grandchildren, Kaylie, Madison, and Gavin Lush of Kearney and Colton King, Devin and Breanna Singleterry of Ogallala; and numerous nieces and nephews.

"Grandmother, Nancy Belle King, became Mrs. Henry Toliver McLemore. Grandmother's sisters, Lucy and Dora King, became Lucy Woodward and Dora Henderson. Their mother was Henrietta King. (So John King had two wives: Jane Bratton and Henrietta ??? her maiden surname unknown. Lucy and Dora King are half sisters to Nancy Belle King. Assume one wife died, thus the remarriage.)"
