George Franklin "Junior" Kasl, Jr. of Dorchester, Nebraska went to his heavenly home on April 9, 2023 at Bryan East Hospital in Lincoln, at the age of 89 years, and nine months.
He was born on the family farm near Tabor Hall on July 9, 1933, the eighth of nine children, to George Sr. and Emma (Rezabek) Kasl. Jr. attended Mount Pleasant Country School, District 62, followed by a year at Dorchester High School. He then decided to leave school to help on the family farm. Jr. served in the Army National Guard for nine years, and during that time he met the love of his life, Shirley, at a dance at Tabor Hall.
He was united in marriage to Shirley Ann Ripa on June 12, 1956, and they made their home on the Kasl family home place where Jr. had grown up. They enjoyed their lives on the farm and stayed busy raising hogs, sheep, chickens, and cattle. They loved kids and spent many summers hosting their nieces and nephews on the farm. After 15 years of marriage, they were blessed with their only son, George F. Kasl, III, or "Georgie" as he was affectionately called. He was the absolute light of their lives and Jr. was so proud to take him along wherever he went and show him off to everyone. Nothing gave him more pleasure than being a dad. He loved spending time with Georgie throughout his years in Boy Scouts, and was a Scout leader part of that time as well. When Georgie got interested in showing cattle, Jr. found himself with a new hobby, too, as he spent many hours going to cattle shows and sales, and later on taking loads to Columbus for embryo transfers or to the sale barn. He enjoyed helping with the cattle chores around the farm, and could always be found puttering around and "fixing fence." That pride and love extended to his grandchildren when they came along, and he and Shirley rarely missed any of the kids' events. They were incredibly supportive with each and every one of their granddaughters' activities, whether it was sports, music concerts, dance or showing animals in 4-H. He was very proud that he and Shirley received the 2022 Friends of 4-H award for the many years of supporting their family and the youth of Saline County.
Besides his family, Jr.'s one true love was farming, and he was a Northrup King seed dealer for many years. He especially loved his wheat and milo, and enjoyed sowing his wheat the most. He was always concerned about the weather, and enjoyed watching the weather channel and listening to the markets and the weather on KRVN (even though the station is over 2 hours away!). Even after retiring from farming, he always wanted to drive around and check the fields to see how the crops were coming along. Having to give up driving himself around was especially difficult, but his family and neighbors made sure he still got to experience planting and harvest as much as possible. Jr. was very proud to be a member of August-Vanek Legion Post #264. He enjoyed attending Legion meetings and helping with the various activities, and was honored to be presented with a Quilt of Valor in March 2022. He was also very active throughout the years at WFLA Tabor Lodge #74 and had received his 50 year pin. He loved both attending and helping at dances at the hall. He was proud of his Czech heritage and loved listening to polkas, and maybe enjoying a pivo or two, especially with tomato juice. On Saturday nights, he could be found watching Mollie B., and rarely missed listening to the All Star Polka show on Sunday mornings. He always looked forward to Czech Days, and getting his annual pin was a must. Jr. also found a special friend in his cat, Blackie, and the two of them enjoyed each other's company tremendously.
Jr. is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Shirley; his son and daughter in law, George, III and Jenni Kasl; granddaughters, Emma Kasl and special friend, Landon Scott; Cassidy Olson and special friend Brandon Bruha; Quinn Kasl and Kendall Kasl; great-granddaughters, Aleah Wendelin and Emerson Scott; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bob and Marva Kasl; Rich and Shirley Kasl; and Evelyn Kasl, all of Dorchester; brother-in-law, Kenny Ripa, Wilber; many nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives.
Jr. was preceded in death by his parents; mother and father-in-law, Victor and Emma Ripa; sisters and brothers-in-law, Evelyn and Elmer Branzovsky; Helen and Edward Halada; Dorothy and Lumir Kotas; Gladys & Warren Burda; brothers and sisters-in-law Ed and Rosella Kasl; Frank Kasl; Darlene Kasl; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, April 14, 2023 at 2:00 PM at Dorchester United Methodist Church. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5 - 8 PM at Kuncl Funeral Home in Crete. Memorials are in care of the family for future designation. Arrangements entrusted to Kuncl Funeral Home in Crete.

Dean Michael Kassik was born to Laura (Bigelow) Kassik and Dean Albert Kassik on June 9, 1990 in Geneva, NE. He passed away on June 20, 2017 in Milligan, Nebraska at the young age of 27.
Dean Michael was so very loved and from the very beginning has always been the center of his parent's and sister's world. He was always very high spirited and from a young age he had an eye for adventure and was gifted with extreme intelligence. Deanie loved more than anything to dance, was the life of the party most times, and enjoyed cracking jokes and making people laugh.
Dean went through school with a 4.0 and was the valedictorian of his class. He participated in all four sports during all four years of his high school career. He was on the speech team, quiz bowl, class play, class officer (president of his class) and earned high honors each year. Upon graduation he attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and was a semester away from graduating with his Accounting degree.
Deanie had a very tender heart. He loved his nieces very much and they brought so much joy to his life. He truly enjoyed spending time with them and would often refer to them as "his five girls". He simply adored his two sisters, and would often say how lucky he was to rely on both of them for lifes advice throughout his years. Deanie idolized his father and admired his strong work ethic. Deanie's first true love was, of course, his mom, Laura. Dean recently learned how to make moms signature "meatloaf", and was excited to have more cooking lessons.
Deanie worked at Kassik Milling, the family business, throughout his teen years, and majority of his adult life. He tried very hard to accomplish all tasks he was given and took so much pride in helping his Dad and Uncle Mike "run" Kassik Milling-always saying how some day he was gonna take over and make his father proud.
Deanie struggled with mental illness. He found the Lord, and became deeply devoted to Christ, praying many times throughout the day, and attending church every Sunday. He encouraged others to pray with him and talk about Christ. He often spoke of gods grace and mercy and how he was destined for Heaven-truly a walking angel on this earth.
Dean Michael Kassik was preceded in death by His grandparents Leonard Kassik and Henry & Roma Bigelow.
He is survived by his parents Laura & Dean Kassik: sisters and brother-in-law Abbey Kassik, Ashley & Steven Havel; Grandmother Arlene Kassik; nieces Ava, Lilly, Livia, Kora, and Laney; and a host of Aunts, Uncles, cousins, and friends.
Married Tomako KOBAYASHI and had one daughter, Mary Jo, who married Jesse FOUNTAIN and they have a son, J.E. (Milligan, p 328).

Robert Ray Kassik of Milligan passed away unexpectedly at Bryan East Hospital October 19, 2019 at the age of 78. He was born October 2, 1941 to Frank W. Sr. and Emma A. (Suda) Kassik on the Charvat farm a mile and a half west of Milligan.
Robert attended Milligan Public School and graduated in 1959. He began work for Farmers Cooperative in Milligan on June 1, 1960. On January 13, 1964 he went into active duty with the army and spent time testing artillery in Germany. He was discharged January 14, 1966, returning to his job at Farmers Cooperative where he continued to serve the patrons. He began his career there in the grain and agronomy departments, driving the propane truck and then moving indoors as assistant manager and then eventually branch manager at Milligan. He was with Farmers Cooperative for 48 years until his retirement in September 2008.
He married Marjorie Halama on March 7, 1975 at the Milligan United Methodist Church. To this union, two daughters were born: Karie Lynn and Stacey Jo.

He was active over the years pitching for the Milligan men's softball team. He also enjoyed golfing but especially loved his bowling. Bob and Marge bowled with others on mixed leagues and he looked forward to bowling on Wednesday nights with the guys on the Kassik Milling bowling team. On December 29, 2000 he bowled a perfect 300 game at Friendly Lanes in Friend, believed to be the first in the alley's history. He also enjoyed playing poker especially at the annual Suda Christmas gathering the first Sunday in December. He was nicknamed "Vejce" (the Czech word for eggs) by his friends because following a night out with the guys he always told everyone to go to the Hilltop Caf? for "vejce." He enjoyed spending his spare time doing jigsaw puzzles and playing computer games.
Bob and Marge enjoyed attending all of Ethan's school and church activities, basketball games, baseball games and 4-H events. Ethan and Grandpa were close referring to each other as "best buddy" while Ethan's classmates affectionately referred to Bob as "Grandpa Fedora." Bob and Marge also enjoyed babysitting and being able to spend much quality time with Carter and Alice. He was very proud of his three grandchildren.
Everyone has always expressed how positive he was, never seeing him without a smile on his face and a friendly greeting or visit for all.

Barbara Smith shows George and Elizabeth Kelly as the parents of Malachi, William, James and John Kelly of Decatur County, Georgia. She further shows George as born ca 1750 and died 13 Sept 1813 in Pulaski County, Georgia. She has Elizabeth born ca 1769 and died 3 December 1833, also Pulaski County.
Might, however, the father of Malachi, William, James and John actually have been John Kelly of Decatur? At the time of the 1840 Decatur County, Georgia census, there is a 60-70 year old John Kelley, who lives in the household next to William Kelley. Also listed in John's household is a 30-40 year old male, one male between the ages of 10-15 and one male under the age of five; one female age 20-30, and two females under the age of five.
Another possibility would be that he was William Kelly, born ca 1780 in South Carolina, who was living with John Kelly at the time of the 1850 census. (William would not be old enough to be the father of Malachi Kelly, however).

S/o Phillip Jefferson KELLEY & Queen America TIPPER who are buried at Tucker Cemetery, Eldridge, Walker Co., AL
Said to be the son of Rev. Joel Parish KELLEY and Deborah Ansofee FUNDERBURK. Other children bonr to Joel and Deborah were: Cornelius, Baron DeKalb, Emily Frances, Nancy Jane, William Wilson, John Van, and Rhoda.
On his "Descendants of William C. KELLY" website, Phil Sulser writes that:
Joel Parrish Kelley was born in North Carolina Oct. 3, 1825. He, along with his parents, brother John (Jack) and sisters Jennie and Malinda, moved to Alabama in the early 1830's. The 1840 Census of Perry County, AL listed: William C. Kelley and John C. Kelley. The family then moved to the area of Farmerville, LA., Concord community just NE of there, about 1842. The 1850 Census of Union Parrish, LA listed: Joel P. Kelley age 25, Deborah Kelley age 21, Cornelius Kelley age 3, Cal Kelley age 1, Tabitha Kelley age 63, John C. Kelley age 33, Eliza Kelley age 32, and their 6 children. Also listed was Van R. Funderburk family, descended from Hans Devauld Von Der Berg and the Von Der Burg family of medieval Germany nobility. The Census of 1860 in Union Parrish still listed Joel P. Kelley and family but with four children.
Joel and Deborah Kelley lived in LA long enough for all 8 children to be born there (Farmerville area, Union Parrish) prior to the family moving to Texas. Debora's brother Van R. Funderburk and family moved to Texas with them in 1869, as did Joel's brother Jack Kelley. Jack Kelley and family left the group in route shortly after crossing the Sabine River and settled in Chambers County, TX. Joel's sisters Jennie Smith and Malinda Davis also moved to Texas. Jennie Smith and family moved elsewhere (where ?) rather than settle in Concord. Malinda Davis's husband disappeared , fate unknown. Malinda thereafter lived with relatives and is buried in Concord Cemetery. Joel and Van Funderburk bought adjoining land 12 miles North of Palestine, TX in the Concord Community, then known as Fitzgerald . Joel, a Baptist Minister, donated the land, a corner of his property, for the cemetery at the Concord Baptist Church when it was organized in 1871. He died of spinal meningitis Feb. 1872 shortly after coming to Texas and was the first person buried in Concord Cemetery. His wife Deborah, who lived another 41 years and never remarried, is buried beside him. She died March 30, 1913.

From the marriage records, and from the estate settlement of her father, Malachi Kelley, it appears that John Morgan was married to Hannah Kelley, and that she was the mother of his children. Hannah Morgan is listed as living next door to Malachi Kelly in Decatur County, Georgia at the time of the 1840 federal census.
Her household was composed of the following members:
2 males 5-10
1 male 10-15
1 female under 5
1 female 5-10
1 female 20-30
It appears from the 1850 Decatur County, Georgia census, that Hannah may have also died before 1850, as her children are living with a 28 year old "Mrs. Morgan." Unless her age is in error, however, the woman listed on the census appears to be too young to be the mother of the children.
The Estate of Malichi Kelley (Hannah's father) was probated in 1857, and Hannah was not an heir. However, two of her children Malichi Morgan and Kizzie Morgan were heirs. It would therefore appear that Hannah Kelley Morgan died sometime before 1857. There was, however, a Hannah Morgan who was granted a land patent for 252 acres of land in Jasper County, Texas on October 23, 1858 (Patent #204. Vl 18, File No 156). Could this possibly be a different Hannah Morgan?
Per Barbara Smith, she married a man named John Morgan. Was she perhaps thinking of the 1827 marriage of a John Morgan to Hannah Kelley in Decatur Co, Georgia?

Who is the 70 year old William Kelley living in the household of John Kelley in 1850 Decatur County, Georgia (Household #641). Could he be John's father? Barbara Smith shows John as a son of George Kelly.
This is my great grandfather, and at birth his name was simply JV Kelley. My grandfather told me the following story about how his father came to be named:
"Papaw was named JV after his uncle John Van Kelley. When Papaw registered for the draft during World War II, the draft board would not take initial names. Many southern boys suddenly had to get names. Since Papaw knew he was named after his uncle, he naturally took the name John Van. But, that is not all. Many people born in the early 1900's did not have birth certificates. The draft board also made everyone get birth certificates. Papaw got a birth certificate, and it has John Van on it. On all official documents, he was John Van, but the family called him JV all his life. The men he worked with at the plant called him John."
Sincerely,
Rachel Kelley Franklin

Nan McCoy Kittell of Jasper located a copy of the following deed of sale by the heirs of Malichi Kelly:
THE STATE OF TEXAS JASPER COUNTY
Know all men by these presents that we Dunkin Morgan & Eliza Morgan and Malichi Morgan and John McLemore of said State and County for and consideration of the sum of Five Hundred dollars to us in funds paid by Kizzie Kelly also of said State and County at and before the signing and delivering these presents the reciept of which we do hereby acknowledge we have granted bargain and sold and by these presents do grant bargain sell alienate transfer convey and confirm unto said Kizzie Kelly and to her heirs as assignees forever the following tracks lots or parcels of lands, described as follows, being situated in said State and County on Big Creek 9 miles southeast of Jasper. By virtue of presumption of Malichi Kelly and of Anthony Passeres (??) headright, we the AFORE SAID HEIRS OF MALICHI KELLYS ESTATE (emphasis added) do grant bargain and sell all of our right title and possession to the said Kizzie Kelly and to her heirs or assigns forever we here unto sign our names before witnesses on this the 14th day of January AD 1867.
Witness PresentSigned James R. LeeM. Morgan Moses LeeDunkin Morgan "X" his mark Eliza Morgan "X" her mark John MacLamore "X" his mark
On the same day, Malichi Morgan, John McLamore and Kizzie Kelly appear to also be selling land "situated on Big Creek 9 miles S E of Jasper" to "Dunkin Morgan and Eliza Morgan his wife," also for five hundred dollars. Perhaps they were partitioning the land?
Both of these were recorded in the Deed Records of Jasper County, Volume 24, page 576.
In a letter written on October 3, 1999, Nan notes however that "I have about decided that the one Kelley/McLemore clue I found is only a clerical error, therefore our Kelley connection my in fact be nonexistant....the deed Book H, p 241 in Jasper showing sale of land to Keziah Kelley from Eliza (Kelley) and Duncan Morgan, John McLemore and M. (Little Mal) Morgan mentions that "We...heirs of Malichi Kelley's estate" do sell, etc. [Eliza and Keziah are sisters, Little Mal Morgan a nephew] BUT the clerk could have misunderstood and added Grandpa's [John McLemore] name AS A HEIR when he merely had some ownership in the land being transferred. While there was no AFFADAVIT OF HEIRSHIP filed, there's a POWER OF ATTORNEY filed (Book F, p 141) which gives ALL the heirs of Mal Kelley and agrees to have brother Joseph Kelley and brother-in-law Randall McDonald act as "agents" to settle this estate. John McLemore is not on this list...bet I've spent at least fifty dollars on postage, copies, phone calls and gas, but think 'this dog won't hunt.'
Could Malachi be the father of Alexander Kelly? He and his family can be found on the FamilySearch transcription of the 1880 Census in Jasper. He was born in Georgia circa 1813-1814.
Could Malachi be the father of Daniel Kelly? Daniel is also listed on the 1880 Jasper County, Texas census as age 63 (born ca 1817) in Georgia. And could Elijah Kelley, father in law of Martha Jane Travis, fit into this family as well? He was born in 1825 in Decatur County, Georgia.
