11301 I12079  Jesse  Charles  6 Oct 1875  2 Aug 1876  His birth certificate records his last name as Gess, with his parents being George Gess and Mary Gess. He died at the age of 9 months, 28 days of Cholera.  STR06
11302 I48  Jesse  George W.  26 Feb 1832  13 May 1903  Also GESSE, GESS

George and his sister Anna Jesse came to America on the ship "Johannes" from Hamburg arriving in New York on November 27, 1857. He was 25 and she 17. Records show their destination to be Wisconsin, although they stayed in upstate New York for at least two years. Anna did move to Wisconsin, with George instead settling in Michigan. "Germans to America" shows they were coming from W?rttemberg. A copy of the actual handwritten manifest shows Mecklenburg. Both appear to be in error. The Hamburg Passenger List, FHL #470839, shows that the "Johannes" left Hamburg on 15 October 1857. On board were George Jesse, age 25, and Anna, age 17. They were shown as coming from Strelitz, Preussen. It appears this village was in the Kreis Kolmar, Posen. In 2003, this village is known as Strzelce, Powiet Chodziez, Poland.

Two years after their arrival in New York, Anna and George were both married, in an apparent double ceremony, by the Reverend Clute, pastor of a church in Byron, New York.

At the time of the 1860 New York Federal Census, it appears that George Gesse was living in the home of John and Phebe Taylor of Elba, Genesee County, New York. The Taylors real estate was valued at $26,000 and there were numerous servants and laborers living in their home. The date of this census was June 20, 1860. He was listed as George Gefse, age 26, Laborer, Germany. The Klesert family, their eldest daughter Marie already married to George, lived two households away.

On George's citizenship certificate, it is stated that he arrived in Michigan in January 1860. He must have arrived somewhat later than this as he was still in New York at the time of the census in June.

George became a citizen of the United States at age 36. On his citzenship certificate, he was listed as George Gesse, and he solemnly swore to his intention to become a Citizen of the United States, and to renounce for ever all allegience and fidelity to each and every foreign Prince, Potentate, State or Sovereignty whatsoever, and particularly the King William of Prussia of whom he had been a subject. This was subscribed and sworn on the 16th day of March, 1868 in the Circuit Court of St. Joseph County, Michigan.

At the time of the 1870 Michigan federal census, he was living nearby his in-laws, the Kleserts. He was enumerated on 8 July 1870 in Sherman Township, Post Office Sturgis.

On the birth certificates of his two youngest children, he is listed as George Gess, and his wife as Mary Gess. The death certificate for his son lists the last name as Gessee.

In a plat of Sherman Township ca 1880 supplied by Dorothy Williams, land belonging to G. Jess adjoins a larger parcel belonging to J. Klevsert.

The above biography was compiled by combining the notes of Dot Williams, Jo Peck, Fern Bengelsdorf, and Melinda Strong.

11313 I32  Jesse  Wilhelmina "Minnie" Johanna Friederika  27 Sep 1865  18 Jun 1961  An undated clipping (circa 1955) from the BAY CITY TIMES about Minnie reads:

WOMAN, 90, PAINTS AS HOBBY

Cass City--Although she will celebrate her 90th birthday anniversary next month, Mrs. B.F. Benkelman, of Cass City (above) is deeply engrossed in a new hobby. She has taken up painting as a pastime and finds it a happy way to keep busy. Like the famed Grandma Moses, Mrs. Benkelman waited a long time to begin painting. She started when she was 87 years old. A busy woman all of her life, Mrs. Benkelman says she finds it hard to just sit still. She balked a little over attempting her first painting but her interest quickened with her first picture and now she is at her easel each morning. She rests in the afternoon. Her hobby resulted because of a present from her daughter, Mrs. J.E. Pease of LaGrange, Ill. Mrs. Pease presented her mother with a painting set which included a canvas blocked off in numbered areas and paints numbered for each section. She delayed getting started but once the project was underway she found it enjoyable. That was two years ago. And it was also her last numbered painting. Since then she has been composing her own pictures and has turned out some 25 canvases. She won't sell a painting but she will give them away. Most have been claimed by her family and friends. She has a few hanging at home. Her painting she says is entirely for her own enjoyment. Her easel is set up on a card table in her living room and she paints while sitting down. She says she gets her ideas from photographs and magazine pictures. Using the basic idea, she then develops her own picture. She recalls that as a youngster she tried painting but did not pursue it since her folks thought it a waste of time. She also recalls that she liked to draw pictures when she was a school girl. For her paintings she likes outdoor scenes best. Mrs. Benkelman will celebrate her 90th birthday anniversary on Sept. 27. She was born on a farm near Sturgis and lived in Kansas for 10 years before coming to Cass City in 1902. Her husband's parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Adam Benkelman were among the pioneer settlers of Cass City. Her husband, a retired general store operator, died three years ago. Her two sons and three daughters are all planning to be with her for her approaching birthday celebration. They are Mrs. E.T. Ball of Pottersville, N.J.; Mrs. May Carpenter of Farwell; Mrs. Pease; and H.L. Benkelman and B.F. Benkelman, both of Cass City.

Great granddaughter Melinda McLemore Strong has an 8 by 10 oil painting of a lakeside pasture in her home in San Antonio, Texas. (2003).

A similar article appeared in the Cass City Chronicle, as follows:

Page One

Judging by the amount of beautiful paintings, afghans and other works she turns out, Mrs. Ben Benkelman, Sr., 88, accomplished more than many persons half her age.

For example, in the last year, Mrs. Benkelman has knitted an intricately designed tablecloth, several small items, painted the picture shown above and another larger picture that is framed and hanges on the wall in her home.

In addition, she writes regularly each week to her three daughters, Mrs. Ruth Ball, New Jersey, Mrs. Lois Pease, Illinois and Mrs. Mae Carpenter, Michigan.

She writes and signs all her own checks and keeps continually busy on her varied projects.

Minnie's obituary, also in the Cass City Chronicle, dated Thursday, June 22, 1961:

Minnie Benkelman Dies at 95

Cass City lost one of its eldest citizens June 18 with the death of Mrs. Minnie Benkelman, 95, in Stevens Nursing Home. Mrs. Benkelman had been ill for some time. She was a patient in the nursing home for several weeks.

She was born Wilhelmina JESSE in Sturgis, Sept. 24, 1865 and married Benjamin F. BENKELMAN in St. Francis, Kansas in 1892. They came to Cass City in 1901, lived at 1454 Maple Street and remained here until their deaths.

Mr. Benkelman ran a general store until his retirement in 1924. He died in 1952.

Surviving are three daughters and two sons: Mrs. E.T. BALL (Ruth) of Pottersville, N.J.; Mrs. Wilmot CARPENTER (Mae) of Farwell; Mrs. J.E. PEASE (Lois) of LaGrange, Ill,; Harold and Ben of Cass City. Other survivors are four grandchildren and nine-great grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Augusta BUCHOLTZ of Sturgis.

Funeral services were held Wed. at 2 p.m. in the Douglas Funeral Home. Rev. S.R. Wurtz of Salem E.U.B. church, of which Mrs. Benkelman was a long time member, officiated and burial was in Elkland cemetery.

11326 I47913  Jirkovsky  Jerald Lynn  19 Sep 1958  6 Jun 2022  JERALD "JERRY" LYNN JIRKOVSKY

June 6, 2022

Jerald "Jerry" Lynn Jirkovsky was born in Omaha, Nebraska on September 19, 1958. He is the third of four children born to Mae-Rita (Moser) and Charles Jirkovsky. He attended grade school at St. Thomas More and graduated in 1976 from Westside High School.

Jerry loved motorcycles and going fast. After high school he attended American Motorcycle Institute in Florida, where he learned motorcycle and small engine repair, quickly learning that to stay employed all year long he would have to move to a warmer climate, California or bust.
He found work at Tustin, CA Honda. He had many jobs in California, including starting and running California Race Services along with brother Tom. They were the west coast Pirelli Road Race tire distributor. The last decade Jerry worked as a small airplane tire recycler and covered several southwestern states.

Some of his loves were motorcycle racing of all types, his two Camaros, completing 14 10k marathons and playing hockey, both as a child and through his adult years, up to two years ago. He loved his family and friends.

A special thank you goes out to Lori (Cantral) Grimit, her husband, Ralph and sons Luke and Grant of Tucson, Arizona, as they took Jerry into their home and family five years ago. Brother Tom and I will forever be indebted to them for the love and care they bestowed to Jerry.

11345 I13561  Jirousek  Frank Stefan  21 Mar 1871  1 Aug 1921  Kay Rybak found the following death certificate information for Frank, indexed with last name SIRONSEK. Ohio death certificate 43429, Frank Stefan Jirousek, 50y4m9d;mrd;res.Ward 12 3663 E. 52nd; fa. John Jirousek, b. There appear to have been several Frank Jirousek's in Cleveland during this same time period.

Frank was not still at home as of the 1900 census, but has not yet located as a head of household in 1900.

The 1900 Cleveland City Directory lists two Frank Jirousek's on p. 546:

Jirousek, Frank lab.r. 38 Svoboda
Jirousek, Frank lab.r. 54 Pleasant

Along with the Frank Jirousek heading a household in 1910 census consisting of himself, wife Stella, and two children, a still single Frank Jirousek can also be found on the 1910 census:

Ohio, Cuyahoga County, 16-ward Cleveland, ED 241
Jerousek, Frank Hd M W 23 Single Ohio Aust/Bohemia Aust/Bohemia English Laborer/Automobile

Frank appears to have ded in 1921, as per the following cemetery records:

Id#: 0165256 Name: Jirousek, Frank Date: 1921 Source: Cemetery record; Cleveland Necrology File, Reel #042. Notes: 1871-1921. Calvary Cemetery Cleveland, O.

This also matches the record Kay Rybak cites above, showing he died at age 50, which would have put his year of death in 1921. Franks mother Theresa Beznoska was also interred at the Calvary Cemetery, as was his brother William and sister Rose.

He it appears likely that he died prior to 1929, as his father's obituary stated that "three sons had predeceased him." Additonally, most of his father's adult sons are mentioned later in the 1942 obituary of a sibling, with the exception of Frank, Frederick and Edward.

However, the 1930 census enumeration for Anastasia "Stella" Jirousek and her children still shows a living Frank Jirousek, age 58, as head of household. This may be in error, or maybe the death information should read 1931 versus 1921.

It also appears, from the obituary below, that (a second?) Frank Jirousek lived in Cleveland, and was married to Marie Kus.

Id#: 0561452 Name: Jirousek, Marie Date: Mar 12 1954 Source: Cleveland Press; Cleveland Necrology File, Reel #121. 11352 I11862  Jirousek  Jan "John"  14 Aug 1847  16 Nov 1929  The son of Frank Jirousek and Marie Vitek.

Cleveland 1900 City Directory p. 546

Jirousek, John Foreman 74 Petrie (also living at that address were sons Edward and James)

The following was excerpted from a translation of Jan Jirousek's obituary. It was written by Al. Zak and translated by Betty Stribrny.

Jan Jirousek was a true and generous type of Czech immigrant from Tabor. He was a man of vigorous heart and true and Christian love. He was born in Kvet near Milevska in Czechy, area Tabor...the son of a poor farmer. His father died unexpectedly and his mother, loving her children dearly, never remarried but took care of the farm herself. His schooling was very short as was that of most village boys of that area. He came to this country in 1866, about 19 years old. In fact, he arrived on his namesday, St. Jan Nepomocene, May 16 and on the Fourth of July the same year he played in a holiday parade downtown. In a few years after his arrival in Cleveland, Mr. Jirousek married a very young girl of the family Beznoska. The wedding supper was held at the bride's home on the north side, the now gone Croton Street, near the old Forest Street. The wedding dance was held in one of the first Czech inns....during the festivities...an oil lamp was knocked over...and a conflagaration started. Everyone attempted to save themselves. The men helped the women to escape as did the young groom who saved his young bride. The fire was quickly extinguished and in the middle of the floor where a hold had been burnt through the men placed empty beer barrels and the dance continued....

For many years Mr. Jirousek was employed as a cooper. For 20 years he was an active musician. He was also the superintendant of the coopers at Standard Oil company, where under his guidance worked many Czech musicians and other of his countrymen. After the invention of metal barrels, Mr. Jirousek became a real estate dealer. He was the one that did the most to enable fellow Czechs to purchase homes...For sometime, E. 53 off Fleet Avenue was named for him.

He was a devoted Democrat. For many years he worked as an inspector of bridges for the city, and as foreman for street paving and as an inspector for voitng booths, until the year 1915 when his age demanded a retirement...

He was also a great worker in Catholic circles. Twice he became president of the First Central Czech-Catholic Unit. He was among the first of those who worked towards the building of the little church St. Vaclav, on Arch and Burwell Streets...

In the 1880s he wrote in the St. Louis "Hlasu" and "Volnosti" (Voice and Freedom) small articles of a satyrical nature and later he even wrote stories into the "American." His nom de plume for the St. Louis articles was J. Kvetovsky (his home town).

Several times he opened a business but poor economic and work conditions caused him to fail. Another reason was the fact that he had a symphathetic nature and a big heart for the poor which made it difficult for him to prosper....

At his coffin was his faithful, grieving wife of 60 years, who shared the ups and downs of life with him and raised 15 children and lost three sons prior to his own death. Their last eldest son, William, is now traveling in Europe visiting this parent's homeland. It will be a terrible blow to him when he returns to find his beloved father gone.

(Courtesty of Caroline Mastny, Schuyler, Nebraska)

Kay Rybak noted his Ohio death certificate was #69505; and showed him as 82 years, 3 months, 2 days of age, and married to Theresa. They had resided on 12922 Marston at the time of his death, and his widow, Theresa, was the informant.

11354 I7850  Jirousek  John S.  Aft 1869  18 Nov 1961  Caroline Mastny shows him as married to a Bertha, and being the father of Leonard. However, based on the 1900 census records for the household of John and Bertha Jirousek, it first appeared that the John Jirousek who married Bertha CIPRA was born in May 1862, which would rule out Jan Jirousek and Terezie Beznoska as his parents, based on their own years of birth. But based on his FindAGrave memorial page--and the photo of his tombstone on that page--he was actually born in 1869, about the same time Jan and Terezie Jirouseks' son was said to be born. The obituary for the John Jirousek, married to Bertha Cipra, does mention son Leonard, but no mention is made of John's parents or siblings.

There was a younger John Jirousek living in Cleveland in 1900, whose age would also make him as a candidate to be a son of Jan and Theresia. This other John Jirousek was living in Cuyahoga County, Cleveland, Ward 39, and his family was listed as follows:

1900 Census
Jirousek John Hd Aug 1871 Mr/5 yrs Aug 1871 Ohio Bohemia Bohemia Blanket Mill
Jirousek, Mary Wf Aug 1876 Mr/5 yrs 2/2 Ohio Bohemia Bohemia
Jirousek, Lillian Dtr July 1895 Ohio Ohio Ohio
Jirousek, John Son Sept 1895 Ohio Ohio Ohio

Id#: 0561446 Name: Jirousek, John Date: Nov 18 19? Source: Plain Dealer; Cleveland Necrology File, Reel #121. Notes: Beloved husband of the late Bertha; dear father of the late Leanard. Friends received at Corrigan's Funeral Home, Lorain Ave. at W. 148th St. Funeral mass Saturday, Nov. 18, St. Mel's Church at 9:30 a. m.

It should also be noted that yet a third John Jirousek, this one born Nov 1849 in Bohemia & married to an Anna, was living nearby the above family. As was the younger John Jirousek, he too was employed in the Blanket Mill. His wife Anna was listed as being the mother of 6 children, 5 still living, and only three of those still it home. So the John Jirousek born in August 1871 might have been a son of either John and Theresia Jirousek, or of John and Mary Jirousek, or of another Jirousek family entire. I was not able to find the family of John, Mary, Lillian and John in subsequent census enumerations.

As might be expected, their were three John Jirousek's listed in the 1900 Cleveland City Directory.

He died on Thursday, July 23, 2009 in his home at the age of 87 years and 14 days. As a young boy he attended country School District #23 and graduated from Friend High School with the class of 1939. Following in the footsteps of his brothers Oliver and Floyd, he enlisted in the Army Air Corp and served in WWII. He was stationed on the island of Guam, intercepting Japanese radio messages. While serving his country he achieved the rank of Master Sergeant. His unit was given a commendation from Admiral Nimitz for their contribution to the war effort. To this union, two daughters, Jacqueline Marie and Linda Rae, and a son, Paul Willard were born.
Willard worked for a time at the Friend grain elevator before returning to the family farm where he and his family lived and worked until 1972.
After leaving the farm he returned to the elevator as a bookkeeper until his retirement in 1984.
Willard was baptized at St. John's Lutheran church in Cordova then later became a member of the United Church of Christ for 79 years where he sang in the choir, men's quartet and served on the council. He was a member of Friend American Legion Ford Banka Post #183 for 64 years and long-time participant on the firing squad. Willard was a school board member and president, member and Master of the Friend Grange, and a charter member of the Friend Country Club. Willard was especially proud when he and Marge were presented with Friend's Lifetime Citizen Award in 2008. Another highlight of his life was when he and Floyd went on the Heartland Honor Flight to the WWII Memorial.
