501 "The last (and probably youngest) son of Burwell and Amy Maclemore was James. Born just before the outbreak of the American Revolution, he was devised the final third of his father's "Pine Log" plantation. Twenty years after his father's death he sol most of his inheritance from his father to Edward REESE by deed dated May 24, 1817, and recorded April 2, 1818 (Sussex Deed Book M, p. 313). He then sold the balance of his inherited lands by deed, in which his wife Rebecca joined, to Joel HAILES dated February 26, 1825, and recorded March 3, 1825 (Sussex Deed Book O, p. 264). By this time, James was probably at least fifty years old, perhaps more. He thereafter disappears from the records without further trace, but is presumed to have died intestate sometime during the next decade or so, rather than moved away, because of his age and because of his children who remained in the area will into the 1840's or longer. 514 "Thomas was most likely born in the late 1750's and probably married in Maryland in the late 1770's. Son William appears to have been born by at least the early part of 1780. Nancy is named as wife of Thomas in his will and they are mentioned in an 1804 land transaction. However, no marriage record has been located yet for Thomas in either Maryland or Virginia to prove whether Nancy was the mother of all of his children. The fact that the first two known children of Thomas were named William and Nancy gives some credence to the idea that his father was named William and his wife was Nancy. Woodson Marshall (a grandson) state that the maiden name of Riley (his father's) mother was Oliver, and that his oldest sister, Harriet Oliver Marshall was named for her. It could be interpreted to mean that Riley's mother was actually named Harriet Oliver, in which case Thomas would have married Nancy after Riley's birth in 1797 but before 1804. Am inclined to think that Thomas only had one wife, and her name was Nancy Oliver.

Based on the bits of available information, would guess Nancy was born about 1759 and was at least 81 years old when she died in 1841. Although probably cared for most by the youngest daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and George Pollard, the 1840 census shows she COULD have been living with Nancy and Joseph Eubank. This Nancy was the daughter of William Marshall and probably the oldest grandchild of Thomas. If Nancy Marshall was living with the Eubank's then it woudl be another indication that she was the only wife of Thomas."

They may have been from Pike County, Mississippi, as this is the location of birth listed on the confederate widows pension application of their daughter, Mary Jane Martin Whitehead.
Martin, William (I15186)

529 "William's middle name is disputed. Some family oral tradition has his middle name as George, yet others suggest that it was Green. Most records simply used the initial G. as his middle name.

In his Confederate Pension Application, William G. stated that his parents were Penelope (Lott) and John Watts, both born in Georgia. He first married Mary McGrew, and she apparently died. In about 1892, he married Lizzie MOORE. He further stated that he had twelve sons and two daughters. His pension application was dated 20 Aug 1912.

The name of three sons and two daughters were indentified in the 1880 census. Aileen Watts Thames, a great-granddaughter of William and Mary, recalled the brothers and sisters of her father (Thomas H.) as Will, Annie, Susie, and a yonger brother who died young. The 1880 census listed Bobbie as two years old, yet in the 1900 census a Robert who was 18 years old was enumerated with William G. Whether these two names refer to the same person is unknown, but probably does. No other children were cited with William and Lizzie in 1900 and none in 1910, but they were living with the W. W. Watts family in Pearl River County, Mississippi in 1920. All of the known children were probably Mary Ann's, because Lizzie and William had been married eight years and had no children according to the 1900 census. The nine unknown children could have been either Lizzie's from a previous marriage, an error by the Covington County clerk who took orally and/or transcribed William G.'s Confederate Pension application, or an unintentional error by William G. when he completed his Pension application." This younger Wm Speights is believed to have m Ann Phelps in 1772 (Chowan Co N.C. Records). He fought in the American Revolution and rec'd Bounty land in Hancock Co, Georgia and according to family legend, John and Levi Speights were brothers. They also rec'd bounty grants in the same county. Levi's family did not come to Texas so far as is known." Speights, William (I6952)

ISAACKS, ELIJAH (1775-1859). Elijah Issacks, early East Texas settler
and delegate to the Convention of 1832, the son of Samuel and Mary
(Wallace) Isaacks, was born in South Carolina on February 22, 1775. He
married Esther (or Hester) Donaho in 1797. By 1809 he was living in Pike
County, Mississippi. After serving in the Mississippi Territorial
Militia during the War of 1812 he moved to Texas. Family tradition holds
that Isaacks arrived in Texas on January 10, 1822, although the illegal
nature of such an early migration led him to subsequently to declare the
date as 1830 before Mexican authorities. In any event he was one of the
earliest white settlers in Bevil's Settlement and later secured a tract
along Walnut Run. Isaacks served as a delegate from the Snow River
district in Tyler County to the Convention of 1832. At this convention,
in San Felipe de Austin, he served on two committees, one to study the
future of settlement east of the San Jancinto, and one to consider a
petition for establishing a state government separate from Coahuila (see
COAHUILA AND TEXAS). He was the father of ten children, a farmer, and a
blacksmith; he owned two slaves by 1850. His son Samuel Isaacks probably
arrived in Texas before him. He lived on land that is now part of Tyler
and Jasper counties before moving to Jasper, where he owned four town
lots. He died there after a fall on November 1, 1859.

James Morgan, the son of Daniel and Mary Morgan (Sampson County, NC>Decatur County, GA>Jasper County, TX), was listed in his household in Jasper, Texas at the time of the 1850 census.

Elijah is said by John W. Clark to be a son of Samuel ISAACS and Mary WALLACE. However, Steve Moody, a descendant of Elijah ISAACS, wrote me that "Elijah Isaacks' mother was Mary Morgan, daughter of Joseph Morgan Jr. I've never been able to figure out how James was related, I thought maybe he was a cousin."

The following information, about Elijah's parents, was copied from a website titled "The Bush Family - My Ancestors" Clinton W. Bush, "Descendants of Isaacs" This has not been verfied against original records and should be used as a starting point for further research.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cwbush/isaacs.htm

SAMUEL ISAACS was born bet. 1754-1759 in Fredrick County Virginia., and died 1844 in Lincoln County Tenn. He married MARY WALLACE 1774 in South Carolina. She was born 1754 in Fredrick County Virginia., and died 1838 in Lincoln County Tenn. (Source: (1) DAR Membership # 278 734 Maud Isaac., (2) South Carolina Archives order # 3374, AA 3957 1/2 pp li B # 19 Contingent Account. Papers by Legislature Nov. 23, 1795.) John W. Clark states that his Revolutionary Pension File Number is S5600.

The correct birth year is in question war records showing 1759, family records are said to show 1754.

Served in South Carolina Line under "MARION AT BATTLE OF COWPENS" during the American Revolution as Spy for North and South Carolina. Also served under his father Col. Elijah Isaacs in North Carolina.

Order # 3374 AA 3957 1/2 pp Li #19 Contingent Account. papers by legislature Nov 23, 1795.
He first joined the American Army as a private in District 96 in S. C. in Sept. 1776. The year before he married and had twin sons born Feb. 11, 1775. He named the twins Elijah and Elisha. He stated that he served for two years as a spy for the American Army against the Indians. He served several three-month terms in both the N.C. and S.C. militia. He served under his father [Elijah Isaacks, also a revolutionary war soldier] at least one term. He was discharged by General McDowell at Quaker Meadows in Burke Co., N.C.

In 1788 he lived in Franklin CO. Ga. It was here the Indians attacked his home and destroyed everything. His wife and children escaped without harm.

Samuel and Mary were also said to be the parents of Elisha Isaacs (twin to Elijah born 1775), Mary Isaacs (who married Jacob VAN ZANDT), Elizabeth Isaacs [Steve Moody shows she married a BROWN], Rebecca Isaacs [Steve Moody shows she married a WALTON], Jane Isaacs and Abigail Isaacs (who married a YOUNG).

536 'John WHITNEY was probably born before his father went to Southold, as the fact that he was of full age before 20 Jan 1665/66, is indicated by the following vote: 'At the towne meeting held the 20th of Jan. 1665, grante unto John WHITNE the sonne of Henry WHITNEY oinse unto his father's home lott extending from the Brow of the hill lying by the hiweigh leading to the Rodds cartpath by the sayd Falls.' He settled, with his father, in Norwalk, followed his business, of millwright, and miller; succeeded him in the possession of the mill and homestead; and married 17 Mar 1674/75, Elizabeth SMITH, dau. of Richard Smith. [Phoenix p11]

'Whitney, John, Norwalk, only son of Henry, married 17 Mar 1675, Elizabeth, daughter of Richard SMITH, probably of L.I . Had John, born 12 Mar 1677; Joseph, 1 Mar 1679, Henry, 21 February 1681; and Richard, 18 Apr 1687; but no more known of him except that he was a miller, had good property and his children perpetuated the name in that region.' [Savage p530]

Savage was INCORRECT in listing a child of John and Elizabeth (SMITH) WHITNEY. John and Elizabeth did NOT have a child named Samuel. This error was repeated in various publications, including several Connecticut town histories and the books by S. Whitney Phoenix. 'Saml. WHITNEY of Stratford' (who married Anne LABOREE) was the son of Nathaniel WHITNEY and Sarah HAGAR - and thus a descendant of John and Elinor WHITNEY of Watertown. Proof lies in the probate records of Samuel's father, Nathaniel WHITNEY, Middlesex County, MA, File No. 24731.

An mtDNA sample supplies by her oldest son, Tom Strong, was analyzed by FamilyTreeDNA in Houston. Their analysis showed the following Haplogroup assignment, along with the following differences from the Cambridge Reference Sequence.

The mitochondrial super-haplogroup U encompasses haplogroups U1-U7 and haplogroup K. Haplogroup K is found through Europe, and contains multiple closely related lineages indicating a recent population expansion. The origin of haplogroup K dates to approximately 16,000 years ago, and it has been suggested that individuals with this haplogroup took part in the pre-Neolithic expansion following the Last Glacial Maximum. William Hurst, on his Haplogroup K Website, writes that "Katrine," the founding mother of mitochondrial DNA haplogroup K, was one of the "Seven Daughters of Eve" as listed in the 2001 book of that title by Bryan Sykes. A lot of happened since 2001, but the book is still valuable.

Katrine lived about 16,000 years ago. Perhaps the oldest known K descendant was Oetzi the Iceman whose frozen body was discovered in the Alps in 1991. Estimated at 5000 years old, the Iceman proved to have the basic mutations for a K: 16224C and 16320C. Every K is a cousin of Oetzi.

A direct male descendant of Arva Allen's (through his son Thompson Allen and grandson William Washington Allen), born with the Allen surname, volunteered to submit a yDNA sample to FamilyTreeDNA.com.

His kit number, in the name of William Allen, is 237184.

The results showed that he was in the R1b1a2a1a1b haplogroup.

He was a 37 marker match to the following :

Samual Doyle Allen Jr (Ancestor Ephraim P. Allen, b. 1820 North Carolina)
Ronald Lee Allen (Ancestor Edmond Allen)
Henry Walton Allen (Ancestor not indicated)
Jerome Brady (Ancestor Richard Brady b. ca. 1805 Co. Caven or Claire, Ireland)
Williams Adams (Ancestor William Adams b. 1816)

Bill Adams emailed the following about his "Adams" lineage: "I can trace my lineage back to William Adams born in Mecklenburg, VA in 1816 or 1820. I know his mother was Sarah/Sally "Adams". (And I think he may have had brothers Alfred and James). I cannot determine who his father was. His grandfather appears to be James Adams who fought in the Revolution. Sarah/Sally having a last name of "Adams" is weird.

Due to the exact match between us, I am wondering whether Sarah/Sally actually had a husband named "Allen" who died or something. Maybe Sarah/Sally went to live with her "Adams" dad for this or some other reason and the kids were raised with an Adams last name. I sayy this because it seems weird to me that Sarah/Sally's husband would also be the same last name of "Adams".

You show your earliest ancestor being 1820, but I do know that the "Adams" in Mecklenburg lived on "Allen's" creek. Also, one of them married an "Allen" (maybe it was William, I can't remember for sure.) I know there were "Allens" living in close proximity to the "Adams" in Mecklenburg, VA."

A direct male descendant of Keton McLemore was a participant in the Morrison DNA study. The kit number was 35844, and this DNA was a high definition match to two other McLemore's (not previously proven to be related), as well as with a McElmurry from Kentucky

See the results for Group O at the following website:

Keton's descendant was a match to a descendant of Wright McLemore of Arkansas, matching in 24 of 25 markers. Wright and Keton lived in adjoining households at the time of the 1830 Richland County, Arkansas census. Keton's descendant was also a high resolution match, 24 of 25 markers, with a direct male descendant of John McLemore, born 1822 in North Carolina, who later migrated to Georgia and Texas. He moved to Jasper and Newton Counties, Texas, just across the border from Sabine Parish, Lousiana, where Keton McLemore lived for some period of time. The markers that differ are, in each case, rapidly mutating markers.

According to FamilytreeDNA in Houston, the probability that the two DNA donors share a common ancestor, is as follows:

In comparing 25 markers, the probability of sharing a common ancestor within the last...

4 generations is
27.54%
8 generations is
58.22%
12 generations is
78.24%
16 generations is
89.3%
20 generations is
94.93%
24 generations is
97.66%

In addition to this above matches, the Wright McLemore, John McLemore, and Keton Jones McLemore descendants were also matches to two proven descendants of Abraham Macklemore, the immigrant, and John McLemore, born 1762, the Revolutionary soldier who left descendants in Knox County, Tennessee; Dade County, Missouri; Illinois; Mississippi; and Alabama.

Each of these matches, including the McElmurry, can be found indexed in these files.

The members of R1b are believed to be the descendants of the first modern humans who entered Europe about 35,000-40,000 years ago. Those R1b forebearers were the people who painted the beautiful art in the caves in Spain and France. They were the contemporaries (and perhaps exterminators) of the European Neanderthals. R1b is the most common Y haplogroup in Europe - more than half of men of European descent belong to R1b. Fourteen of the 30 most common haplotypes in the YSTR.org database are typical of R1b.

The descendants kit was upgraded to Y-700 in 2024. His more detailed confirmed Y-DNA Haplogroup was R-BY82607.

At 67 markers he matched other kits on FTNDA, with the McLemore Surname, as follows:

Charles Weldon McLemore Sr and Jr
Timothy V McLemore
Jeremy John McLemore
Thomas Eugene McLemore
Stanley McLemore

Other surnames he matched were Voyles, Fugatt, Peerson, Mullins, OConnor and Walker.

At 700 markers he matched Charles Weldon McLemore Jr and John Fugatt. The other matches may not have tested more than 67 markers, and may or may not have still been close matches at 700.

The McLemore's that he matched were (1) a descendant of Keton Jones McLemore, born in Kentucky and living in Sabine Parish, Louisiana in 1850 (they were one step removed at 25 markers); and (2) a descendant of John McLemore, born 1822 in North Carolina and living in Decatur County, Georgia in 1850 (they were two steps removed at 25 markers).
The different markers, in each case, were rapidly mutuating.

551 (Medical):A direct male descendant of Joel McLemore, along with two direct male descendants of his brother Burwell, were participants in the Morrison yDNA study.

The main purpose of this study was to prove that the immigrant founders of this family in America, James Macklemore and Abraham Macklemore, were brothers. If brothers, then the y-DNA of the direct male descendants of both men would match. However, instead of confirming this, it appears that we have AT LEAST two distinct yDNA groups, with three additional potential lines. The first cluster of matching yDNA has ten members, who are part of the R1b1a2 haplogroup . The R1b DNA haplogroup, is the most common in Western Europe. Two of the ten participants can trace their lines back to the immigrant Abraham Macklemore, the husband of Mary Young. Another member can trace himself back to Moses McLemore b. ca. 1738 who is thought to be a son of Wright McLemore, grandson of William Macklemore, and great-grandson of the immigrant James Macklemore. If both these members are correct in their paper trails, AND if Amos can be proven to be a great-grandson of James Macklemore, then the assumption that James and Abraham have a common paternal ancestor is correct as descendants of both men share the same yDNA. The other six members of this first cluster all have the McLemore surname, and all can trace their lineages back to McLemore men who predate the Civil War, but have not conclusively linked themselves back to either James or Abraham.

The second cluster in the study have three members to date. They are all in the E1b1 Haplogroup, which is rare in Western Europe. All of them match each other, but do not match any other McLemores yet tested. All three of these members can trace their ancestry to John Macklemore of Virginia, the husband of Faith. Two of them descend from his son Burwell, and the third from his son Joel. But, as discussed above, IF we have also proven that the immigrants Abraham and James Macklemore are brothers, then it follows that John Macklemore could not be the biological son of the immigrant James, as the yDNA of these two clusters is very different.

Our current thinking is that John was likely a son of Fortune's and a stepson of James Macklemore, who raised him as his own. Alternatively, it may still be proven that James and Abraham were not brothers. They may share the same surname, but not the same paternal ancestry. More proven descendants of James and Fortune Macklemore will need to be tested to confirm or refute either theory.
