Copiah Co, MS, William McGrue was a bondsman for John J. Holliday and Mary A. Ainsworth, 8 Dec 1825. Also, a daughter of Levin Hainsworth married Col. William McGrew about 1802, any connection?
Veteran of the War of 1812 (DeClouets Regiment), drafted in E. Feliciana, LA in Sept 1814, fought in the battle of New Orleans Discharged in New Orleans in Feb 1815. At the time he enlisted, Olivia's statement describes her husband as "5 feet, 10 inches, light complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, occupation farmer"
Purchased land in Marion Co, MS 29 Jan 1816, 31 Oct 1818, and on 25 Sep 1819, he registered a brand.
Per the book REFUGIO by Herbart Huson, as extracted by Esther McGrew Hardin: "Colonel William McGrew and family moved to Refugio County in the later part of 1851, or prior to 25 January 1852. He acquired the holdings of Capt. Alfred S. Thurmond (his future son-in-law) at Mesquite Landing and operated a large planation house there. He was, perhaps, the largest slave-owner in the county and brought his negroes with him. His children were Dr. William P. McGrew, John McGrew, James McGrew, Henry McGrew, Robert McGrew, who married Alia (Alice per census), daughter of Thomas Marshall Duke, Julia McGrew, who was the wife of Capt. Alfred Sturgis Thurmond, and Sarah McGrew, wife of William Andrews, an early citizen of Refugio County. Andrews later moved to Clinton." Thomas Marshall Duke was one of the "old 300," the the settlers originally granted land by Stephen F. Austin.
He is listed as a slave holder on the 1860 Refugio, Texas census.
Son James McGrew died intestate in Austin, TX in 1912 at the Texas Confederate home. The settlement of his estate shows the names of the children of all his brothers and sisters.
His war pension application was signed by W.C. Terry, M.J. Terry, and A.S. Thurmond, J.P Refugio County (Husband of Julia)
Later Olivia is living with R.A. Upton (Sheriff of Aransas Co.?) | McGrew, William (I2159)

He and William purchased land in East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana in 1807. (THE SOUTHERN McGREWS GREW).
Purchased land in Marion Co, MS on 6 Aug 1817 and on 31 Oct 1818 (THE SOUTHERN McGREWS GREW).
Per Copiah County MS marriage records, John McGrew was a surity for J.M. Rowan and Mrs. Martha Lawhan, 2 Oct 1842, so this places the family of John McGrew in Copiah Co. It was probabaly his son, however, as he was deceased by 1836.
Was in DeClouets Regiment during the War of 1812, and was in the Battle of New Orleans, along with his twin brother William.
Per Nancy's pension application, he died in Covington, St. Tammany Parish, LA. Their is also a Covington Co, Mississippi where the family once lived. This could cause confusion in the records.

Wynema McGrew writes that Zadock was a member of the Choctaw Indian Nation, but it is unknown which parent was the Choctaw. He apparently was married prior to his marriage to Ann, because he and an unnamed son owed $431.26 at the Choctaw Trading House in St. Stephens, Mississippi Territory. The listing of debtors was dated 1 Oct 1822, and his credit rated good. The first mention of his indebtedness to the Trading House was 31 Dec 1819, and in the 31 Mar 1831 report of those with balances dues, he and an unamed son were listed. He signed by his mark the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek, dated 28 Sept 1830. Several Brashears, one of whom was Zadock, applied to remain five years and become citizens of the State [United States]. The date of entry of Zadock's application was 13 Jun 1831, and he had two children under the age of ten years and one child over ten years. "Half Breed man" was written in the remarks column.

Wynema McGrew wrote "When S. D. completed his secondary education, he stayed home, took care of his mother until her death in 1914, and farmed until he joined the army during World War I. After his discharge he married Mamie Davis, his first wife, and resumed farming, knowing he did not want it to be his life's work. Soon thereafter, he took advantage of the educational opportunities offered to veterans of World War I, entering Mississippi A&M (now MSU)....upon graduation he taught and/or was superintendent of several schools in south Mississippi until his retirement. He and Mamie had no children....(later) he earned his master's degree at the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa."

Wynema McGrew wrote that Anna was baptized 25 Jan 1801 and the baptism was recorded on page 76-a, Bapt. Rcds, Bk #2, Archdiocese of Mobile. She was recorded as the daughter of Julien and Isabelle Migrou De Castro.
She further notes that on 3 Oct 1833 (after the death of Zadoc) Ann was made guardian of three sons, John, Turner, and William. She was listed as head of household in the 1840 Sumter County, Alabama census. The family included one female between the age of 30 and 40, one male between the age of 20 and 30, one mail between 15 and 20, two males betwen the age of 5 and 10, and one female less than five years old.
McGrew also states that John, Turner and William are not found on the 1850 census enumerations for Alabama, Mississippi or Georgia. | De Castro, Anna (I2162)

Wynema McGrew, in her book titled THE JAMES MCGREW FAMILY, 1744-1797(Second Edition, 1999, Hattiesburg, MS), writes that she had made the following TENTATIVE conclusions about Alexander and Margaret McGrew and their offspring, using data collected from a variety of sources (some of which may be considered factual and some speculative).
Alexander and Margaret McGrew may have married in Ireland, and appear to have been the parents of six children, places of birth unknown. They were probably from in or near Omagh City, County Tyrone, Ireland, the McGrew family having come to Omagh City from Scotland before the mid-fifteenth centery. The name McGrew probably originated form the sept of MacGrewar or MacGruer of the Clan Gregor.
Esther McGrew Hardin instead suggested that the family descended from Quaker families originally from Pennsylvania. Many McGrew's can be found in Orange County, North Carolina records. Additionally, in the corner of Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware, many members of the Blackburn, Means and McGrew families were all kin.
James Mims, on his online "Digging the Roots of the Mims Family Tree" has a third theory, showing him as Alexander MacGRUER, born 7 Oct 1706 in Iverness, Scotland, and married to Margaret TATE, also of Inverness. Both were shown as dying in South Carolina.
Wynema lists the probable children of Alexander and Margaret are:
1) Mary McGrew b. ca 1737 d. bef. 1776, married Grove YOUNG. [Note: Janice McAlpine (mcalpage@cox.net) emailed that Mary's husband was actually named Legros Young, and that he died on 5 Mar 1878 in Cambden District, South Carolina].
2) John McGrew b. ca 1739 d. ca 1818, married Elizabeth CLARK
3) James McGrew b. ca 1744 d. ca 1797, married Constantia (Constance) TILLET
4) Peter Alexander McGrew b. ca 1745 d. ca 1792, married Margaret McCLAIN
5) Margaret McGrew b. bet 1746-1749 d. ca 1805
6) William McGrew b. 23 Apr 1752 D. 1815, appears to have wed Mary GOODWYN
She noted that on 4 July 1755, Alexander McGrew petitioned for 550 acres of land in South Carolina, and had 11 persons in his household. On 5 August of that same year, a plat for 350 acres of middle ground between Broad and Wateree Rivers was found with a certificate dated 10 Oct 1755.
In his Will, dated 11 Oct 1776, he names five children--four by relationship, James, Peter, William and Margaret, one by implication of relationship, John--and also his own wife Margaret. His will was probated 7 Feb 1977 in Craven District, SC. Alexander does not name Mary as a child. Wynema cites Caroline T. Moore, comp "Abstracts of the Wills of the State of South Carolina 1760-1784" Privately Published, 1969), pg. 292, as her source for this information.

Wynema McGrews writes that he was the son of Jane Hall and Joshua Barton. She cites also a letter he wrote his parents on 24 Feb 1842, "....I am Married. I Married Widow McGrews Daughter of the County we were married on the 27th of January I wrote to you but a short time before and since informing you of my intentions but for fear that you should not receive them I will say something about them I expect to make my home in Texas...."
Several authors reported that David A. Barton was killed with George Washington McGrew in an series of Indian attacks during a battle on the east side of the Brazos, near Fort Marlin in Texas. Wynema reports, however, that is was actually David's brother, Hale Barton, who was killed in 1839 with George Washington McGrew.
On 7 Jan 1845, Samantha's attorney filed a petition for the Robertson County Probate Court to be named administratix of her late husband's estate. Her petition was granted. On 5 May 1845, Samuel B. Killough petitioned the same court to grant him Letters of Administration since the estate was wholly without legal representation. The probate judge appointed Samuel Killough, J.A. Well, John F. McGrew (Samantha's brother), and Thomas Webb as "safe hands" of the estate, which was to be eventually passed to the sole heir of the estate, Elizabeth Jane Barton. | Barton, David Armstrong (I2096)

XI. Josiah Whitney, b. at Norwalk, Conn., date not known; married, 30 Oct. 1729, at Norwalk, Eunice Hanford, dau. of "Mr. Eleazer Hanford," and Hannah, his wife, and g. dau. of Rev. Thomas and Mary (Miles) Hanford, of Norwalk. They settled in Norwalk, where he died as early as 1750. He was of legal age to sell land as early as 25 Jan. 1721-22, and was named in the deed after his brothers--an indication that he was younger than they. No record of her birth or death has been found. She had L82 16s. 7d. from her father's estate, about 1737. In that year, 19 May, John Reed, "for and in behalf of his wife Hannah, and as guardian to his son-in-law, Eleazor Hanford, and his daughter-in-law, Mary Hanford, minors," quit claim to Josiah Whitney, of Norwalk, and his wife Eunice, their shares in 58 acres of land "belonging to the estate of Mr. Eleazer Hanford, late of sd Norwalk, deceased, situate nar Pimpewauge, above the Split Rock farm that was Mr. Joseph St. John's, late of Norwalk, deceased." Probably John Reed married Hannahy, widow of Eleazer Hanford and mother of Josiah Whitney's wife. The final distribution of the dower of Eleazer Hanford's widow, 1 May 1759, shows that Eunice Whitney had already deceased.

Young followed his brother Atkins westward. After buying 100 acres from Atkins in 1753, then selling 100 acres to Edward Robertson with Atkins in 1755, Young also began operations in Granville County, buying 275 acres there on both sides of Shocco Creek by deed witnessed by his brother.
Sept. 18, 1759 - Littlebury Swinney also White, aged 9 yrs May 15, 1759, bound to Young McLemore "to learn the business of a Planter and to have a years Schooling", said McLemore "at the time of his freedom" agrees to give him "a young Horse Bridle & Saddle & decert suit of Cloaths." (Source: Bastardy Bonds from Granville County, N.C., 1749-1780, as transcribed at:

Young remained for a time, however, in Northampton County, serving in 1760 in that county's militia as a private in the cavalry troop of Capt. Henry Dawson. He was granted, also in 1760, 640 acres on both sides of Flat Creek in Granville County, and from then on made his home there. He picked up an additional 543 acres at the head of Shocco Creek, near his earlier tract, in February 1762.
Within three months, in May 1762, Young sold 200 acres on the north side of Shocco Creek, adjoining Ward and Macon. He was joined in this deed by his wife, Lucy. Thereafter, his lands seem to share a jurisdictional history similiar to Atkins', being found first in Granville County (where Young witnessed two deeds in 1763), then in Bute County (where he also witnessed a deed in 1766), then in Warren County (where he picked up four extra acres on the South Side of Sandy Creek in 1779), and finally in Franklin County where both he and his son Young Jr. were heads of household in the first U.S. Census of 1790.
On the last day of 1803, Young McLemore signed his will, and it was probated in Williamson County in April 1804. His principal legatees were his daughter Sukey GRAY and her children, though he mentioned another granddaughter as well. He is also known to have had at least two sons, Young Jr. and Nathaniel. His wife, Lucy died shortly before he did in 1803.

Yvonne Mackiewicz (yvonne1955@sbcglobal.net) and Steve Dailey (scdailey@yahoo.com) both show the wife of William Helwig to be Sophia MUCK of Alsace, Germany (France). This is interesting, as their seem to be other MUCK's who also migrated from Erie County, NY to Tuscola County, Michgan...as well as possibly married into the STRIFFLER family, who followed the same route of migration. | Muck, Sophia (I29088)

Zlata moved to the United States probably around 1901 and changed her name to Celie Smith. In Baltimore, she met other relatives who had emigrated from the Rakisik-Kupisik area, including a first cousin, Dov Ber Shapiro, who was from Kamai (Kamajai - "kah-mah-YAY"). Kamai is about 7 miles south of Rakisik. In America, Dov Ber had changed his name to Benjamin. Celie married Benjamin and thereafter was known as Celie Shapiro.

A Rachael Jennings was born in about 1800 in Feltville, New Jersey. No parents are listed for this child and a "relation, Flora L. Wilcox" is given as providing the information of the event-she was possibly the unmarried mother, the father being a Mr Jennings.
However this Rachael Jennings of Feltville has no proven connection with, and is possibly quite unrelated to, the future wife of Richard Strait. | Jennings, Rachael (I6269)

\\According to the book "Sabine County Marriages 1875-1900 1900-1910 Prior to 1875" by Blanche Toole, "Gooch, C.P. (married) R.J. Harper 3 July 1888 by M. Youngblood. Based on the following census records, it appears she was born in approximately 1868, and would have been about 20 years old when she married.
Roxie appears to be the daughter of James Robert Harper and Delia Rice, both of whom were born in Mississippi. At the time of the 1880 Sabine County census, they had a 12 year old daughter named Jane. There are no other Harper families in Sabine county with a daughter of that age.
